I have a movie clip in my library linked as aboutUsMenuBtn. And I as get the childNodes.nodeName from the XML file, I want them to be assigned to a dynamic text field "btn_txt" inside of the aboutUsMenuBtn. With each node, a button is going to be attached to the aboutUs stage (I'm working using a Flash Form Application).

I am trying to use Kirupa's XML drop down menu(action script 2.0): aka: [URL] however I cannot have it output the childNode. This is because it is using a for loop with the curr_item variable. when I try to trace the for loop count variable, it just returns the last for loop variable. I basically want it so that when I click on a button on the 3rd tier submenu, I want it to output all the prior tiers that the button belongs in.

I've been reading tutorials and trying to break down source fla files to understand how things work. I've tried many different ways of accessing the name of an attribute, but just can't get it working.The current Function:

I have tried the name, I've tried searching it as an Object, I looked for solutions on stackoverflow.. nothing has worked for me so far. Originally I had the properties node as such: fearing that Flash was interpretting incorrectly.
edit: It seems like the XML was interpretted rather than printed out..
I have a rather large XML file (though it's pretty simple in it's structure). My flash program is using most, but not all of the data in this file, and I am currently setting a variety of flash variables by looking at specific node numbers (i.e. firstChild.childNodes[4].attributes...). This all works fine.
However, this XML does have the big potential of changing or being added to, and what I want to do it read through the XML, look at the nodeNames and return the nodes position. This way, I can set some basic variables to equal the node positions and not have to hardcode everything.
I currently have a simple loop that is grabbing the nodenames and storing them in an array. What I can't figure out how to do is use this to get node position, and then set a basic "name = nodepositionX". Then I can use "firstChild.childNodes[name].attributes..." I don't think this is terribly complicated, but I'm a designer learning all this programming stuff on the fly here.

I am currently migrating to as3 with e4x xml. I am trying to migrate a controller class I have in as2 that iterates through an xml tree and builds a controller object that controls apperance and content of a flash application. In my as2 class i would use the "nodeName" to retrieve an elements name therefore the script was completely dynamic to any xml file and would build the contents of the controller object relative to nodeNames. I am trying to decifer a way of doing this with e4x but am struggling to find the syntax. I have tried using a for each iteration using the new "elements () " function but e4x doesn't seem to recognise the nodeName function.

Inside my XML file, I want to have multiple child nodes nested in a parent node. But when I try to trace out the multiple child nodes, I only get the first child node in the trace, despite using "@" wildcard. Is it because the childnodes are named the same?

However if there's no discount, I want to set this movieclip to ._visible = false - since its pointless to have it tweening around when there's no text on it.How on earth would I check if <discount> exists or doesn't? I'm workig on my portfolio and here is what Im running into...en I debug my fla the following XML shows up with extra "xmlobj.childNodes[1].childNodes["Right here"]hen I browse the file in the debugger (variables section) instead of 0,1 and 2 for childNodes the are 0-5??? and every other one is all null values... also they show up as [1] [2] [3] directly under xmlobj when I expand it can anyone tell me whats up with my xml? if its my script or you think it is I'll post the code/fla if I need to... alsoMy xml will be dynamically created via a php -> mysql script eventually (I have that worked out I just need to get this working so I can properly format my php-> xml output for flash which is what I think my problem is.

i have a problem with my flash menu. It's simple menu that contains one MC at start that works as button, u can edit size of the menu from external .txt file by changing the value of menu length. All that works fine , my problem is that every new duplicated mc contains dynamic text area as a label. Labels are also loaded from that .txt file , but that works only for the 1st mc because the newly created text areas in mc's dont have Instance Name set. How can i assign them from as?

I'm using a class to dynamically populate menu items based on arrays. The menu has to allow individual chapters and lessons to expand/contract to display the slides within.
I'm trying to set it up so that when the user hits the Chapter or Lesson item, it rebuilds the menu with the appropriate Chapter/Lesson expanded. I've got that part working, but I need to remove the elements that were previously added using addChild, but I'm not sure how to clear all the elements from an object?[code]...
Lets say i hava category and some articles in it (one article - few photos and description). I want to make a thumbnail menu in footer each thumbnail linking to an article. The question is how to make this menu to load automatically? If i put articles in category/article1, category/article2 (and so on) folders, I want to see two thumbnails linking one to first article, second thumb to secont article. The only problem is when I click any buttons it produces errorTypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.at resume_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()not sure what I have to do. All it's supposed to do is when you click a button the target movie clip plays frames 2 - 10 and the previous movie clip plays frame 11 - 20. Not sure what's the problem here.

Link to site: [URL] I've been trying to create a flash website menu that updates the menu text via an xml file. The problem I'm experiencing is that when I update the dynamic text in the menu, it doesn't seem to go through. I know I am referencing the dynamic text correctly as when I run the swf for the first time, I briefly see the correct text for about half-a-second before it is replaced by the default dynamic text. There is something that is overwriting the new text with the default values but I cannot see what is causing it.
I am changing the dynamic menu text in _root although the dynamic text exists in nested movie clips i.e. '_main.menu_mc.menu_panel_1.menu_button_1_1.menu_b utton_text'.
