ActionScript 3.0 :: Setting X And Y Properties According To Stage?
Jan 18, 2011I need to assign a symbol that is added dynamically in a symbol, x and y coordinates (that are from the main timeline).

View 2 Repliesi'm attempting to cast an object's property as an actual property of another object. here's my object variable: var propObj:Object = {prop:"width", width:50}; now i want to assign the property of a sprite using that object's properties. var sp:Sprite = new Sprite(); sp.(propObj.prop as Sprite.property) = propObj.width; now, i'm not even going to try that because i know the compiler will explode all up in my face. but you should be able to see what i'm trying to do. why i'm trying to do it is because i'm reading in an XML file with an undetermined list of usable properties for specific objects. so instead of writing something like a huge switch statement to evaluate whether the XML file has a value for that specific property, i'm trying to assign properties dynamically based on what's available in the XML file. if what i'm trying to do is possible, what's the best way to do it?
View 1 RepliesI'm completely new to this forum, and would like to ask your help for one issue. I am working on an interactive flash map, I was able to set all the countries borders with the help of fireworks (awesome tool), and import them back to flash and set each country as a button. I would like to set all of the buttons to have the same properties for example : All the buttons have default red color, and will have a mouse hover frame that will change the color of the button to blue. I DO NOT want to set each button manually, because I would like to have the choice to change the mouse hover color to a different one, and would like to avoid passing each button and changing each one's mouse hover frame.
Is there a way I can built a template of a frame, and for each button set its mouse hover frame as the template frame I built ? And then if I make any changes to the template frame, all of my buttons would be automatically updated ?
I want to open a new internet window using actionscript on a button but I also want to control the characteristics of that window when it opens:
1. I want it to be a specific size - 180 x 200
2. I want all the standard page elements removed - the scrollbar, browser tools etc - so there is just a box to close it.
3. I want it to be centered on the screen
Can I get this much detail with actionscript regarding the new window when I open it?
i have a problem whenever i name a movie and set its properties. whenever i use eval on the name it works,
[Code]...
i've heard you shouldn't use eval anymore because it's deprecated, and that you should use this[object]._property instead, but it's not working for me--am i doing it wrong?

Trying to check for keypress combos and setting properties true accordingly, the trouble is I'm not being able to set the properties false to the corresponding keyreleases.
Code:
// X3msnake v1.1.060510
// Controller checks for keypresses translates it to property states, sets up and gets keys.
package{
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.display.Stage;
import flash.events.KeyboardEvent;

how to set default property values for objects that are being created in a loop.
In the example below, these propeties are the same for each object created in the loop: titleTextField.selectable, titleTextField.wordWrap, titleTextField.x
If you pull these properties out of the loop, they are null because the TextField objects have not been created, but it seems silly to have to set them each time.
var titleTextFormat:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
titleTextFormat.size = 10;
titleTextFormat.font = "Arial";

I want to bring an image in from a folder and then display this image in a specifically sized box.[code]So obviously I want the image loaded into a 200 x 200 box (the image is 1200x1200) and scaled proportionately. What do I need to do? The box won't resize at all.
View 6 RepliesI have a button function the launches a small movieClip (like a window). Inside this movieClip is your typical keypad.
Code:
package com {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.*;
public class Login extends MovieClip{
[Code].....
I'm trying to next a series of keypad buttons inside the new loginBox instance, so they'll be referenced as loginBox.key1 etc etc.
I want to set their x/y coordinates before they are added to the stage (loginBox.key1.x = 23) , but obviously they don't exist yet.
I'm missing the way to get around this. The very last line of the above code is my hack attempt so far, and it's still causing me problems.
If you have 5 or 6 different components in your library that you want to put inside of eachother from *.as files
I am attempting to set the propreties of a navigation button (movie clip) that has been built dynamically. The button contains a text field that I want to format and a movie clip that I want to adjust the alpha. I find the object using getChildByName(), however do not seem to be able to set the properties using the code below.[code]
View 2 RepliesI have just created a custom AS3 Component to use in an MXML project.[code]but then i lose some re usability.What do i need to do to be able to set properties from mxml?
View 3 RepliesI've got an image slideshow, and a preloader for each individual image. I want the preloader BAR to be dynamically assigned the width of the banner, which is defined in a variable. Here are my preloader settings and function call:
ActionScript Code:
/****PRELOADER SETTINGS****/
progressBar._width = myVars["BANNER_WIDTH"];
progressBar._height = 2;
progressBar._visible = false;
progressBar._xscale = 0;
[Code] .....
Basically, what is happening is. The "progressBar" width is being defined as the variable BANNER_WIDTH, but when the _xscale property is run in my preloading function, it doesn't care what the banner width is. So what I want to say is. I want you to _xscale according to what is being loaded, but I don't want your _xscale to exceed BANNER_WIDTH's width. I don't know how to do this and keep the preloader accurate. I can only save as CS4, CS5.
I created a movie clip symbol with a user interface in it, using the standard components. It contains various components that I draged on the stage. I named the instances (e.g titleLabel). Then I created an ActionScript class for that user interface. Under the linkage properties of the symbol I specified that class. In the class itself, i declared the attribute "var titleLabel:Label". I thought this would be the same instance from the symbol? But: Trying to set the text of the Label AFTER the movie was dynamically added to the parent does not work. I cannot access any properties.
Here is the example:
My Class for the user interface:
Code:
import mx.controls.*;
class Information extends MovieClip {
var titleLabel:Label; //this is the same instance name as in the symbol
[Code].....
I have 35 movieclips, named s1, s2, s3 etc, depending on the value of currentDisplay, I would like to set a movieclip visible property to true while the others are set to false, I have tried the following:
Code:
for (i=1; i<36; i++){
trace(i);[code]....
but I receive an error message: 1083: Syntax error: dot is unexpected. I assume it is referring to the dot before visible.
Setting properties of a nested clip from the associated document class of the parent clip. I am developing a Jigsaw puzzle in Flash. I am developing a class for puzzle piece. The code of the PuzzlePiece class in given as follows.
PuzzlePiece class
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
public class PuzzlePiece extends MovieClip {
private var pieceX:Number;
[Code] .....
Is it wrong to access it like that. The PuzzlePiece is the export for a puzzle clip. For the time being I am hard coding the dimension as 60. I have aloso uploaded the fla and as files. [URL].
If I have a textfield instanciated from the document class with a base .string set as for example "4444" and BEFORE adding it to stage, I change the .string value to say "1234", when I test the swf, I can see the 4444 for a very short time changing for the 1234.I didn't change the value after adding to stage so I don't get why the display number is changed after being added to display.How to force it to add to stage (display itself) only once the initial changes to his properties are done?
View 3 RepliesI want to set the height, width and backgroundcolor, etc on stage programmatically in a pure AS project. I'm not really sure about how to do that.
I tried to set the height and width like that but it failed..
stage.align = StageAlign.LEFT;
stage.height = 400;
stage.width = 500;
here is my code
Code:
package
{
import flash.events.*
import flash.display.*
[Code]....
does it have to do anything with ADDED_TO_STAGE event?
I have some code that adds a child using addChild(dragsquare); dragsquare is what I used as the class for a movieclip, mcsquare.
Everytime a child is added to the stage, it is called: ObjectX The "X" increments everytime a new object is added using ++objNum.
E.g:
Object1
Object2
Object3
etc...
When the child is added to the stage, it can be dragged, resized, rotated, etc...
I have used this code so when someone clicks the "save" button it loops through all objects on stage (increasing the last number by 1 to get the next object) and finding their properties. Here is the code I have used.
ActionScript Code:
Code:
save.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, saveObjects);
function saveObjects(event:MouseEvent):void {
for (var i:uint=0; i<numChildren-23; i++) {
[Code]....
23 children already exist on stage so I have to minus that number to get whatever is added on stage by the user.
However, scaleX is getting the childs ORIGINAL properties and not its current stage properties (where it has been resized, rotated etc..) and only returns a 1 for scaleX. How would I make it track the properties it has on stage?
i can set the stage's background color, etc., using a SWF metadata tag:
[SWF(width="1024", height="600", frameRate="60", backgroundColor="#000000")]
or if i'm using Flash Professional, i can simply set these properties for the document in the UI.
while the Stage class offers the ability to set a frameRate and override width and height thru properties in actionscript, why is it not possible to set the background color of the stage the same way?
Stage doesn't have a property (public or otherwise) for background color. can anyone explain why that is? it seems strange to me but i'm assuming there is a good reason rather than this simply being a oversight.
I have an object on my stage, called obj.I also have a class called "Physics" which contains a bunch of methods for physics, such as inertia, gravity, and bouncing off walls. In order to do some of these,I need access to the stage.stageWidth and stageHeight properties.My code is as follows:
public function wallBounce(obj)
{
this.stageRef = stageRef[code]...
This is supposed to check if the object's x value is greater than the stageWidth or less than 0. When I run this code it says:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
I am a semi-newbie programmer who is completely self-taught and have no clue what is causing this. I spent a bit googling it, and I think it has something to do with scopes,.
If I have a swf that's being loaded into other peoples' swfs (which I have no control over) is there any way I can get properties from the stage (such as height, width, fullScreenHeight, etc.) or does this have to be exposed by the loading swf?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to access the x and y properties of the stage so I can set an objects' x and y properties to place it on the center of the stage:
this.x=stage.stageWidth/2;
this.y=stage.stageHeight/2;
The call to instantiate the object(*.fla):

I am using this code to iterate through the contents of a movieclip which contains instances of "alien2" - my alien. I have each alien in a movieclip called squadron1. They all have their own layer and follow a motion path to recreate the attack sequence in Galaga. I can add action script to them by right clicking on them, but when I do this test below I can't call any MovieClip methods on them. It is my intention to add a function to each one via code to make it detect bullets, look for the player etc, but at the moment all I can do is add the code to each one individually on the stage.
Code:
var target;
for(var item in _root){
if(_root[item] instanceof MovieClip ){
target = _root[item];
[Code] .....
I am trying to access a property that belongs to the stage, from a class. For example, let's say I add a textfield with an instance name of "magic_txt" on the stage. In the Document Class, I am able to access magic_txt and update the field like so:
magic_txt.text = "Magic Text"
However, since I would like to work in classes, I am having a difficult time figuring out how to access the property "magic_txt.text" from a class. I know I need a reference, but I am unsure how to set this reference.
I am coming from a strong background in Visual Basic, and in Visual Basic, the way to access a form property is to call the form name (dot) object. In actionscript, it doesn't seem to be as simple.
if i have some mc objects on stage and they align lets say to the top side and bottom of the screen then if resized smaller than stageWidth 800 and stageHeight 550 they stay where there are and if the stage is resized bigger then they lock to the top side and bottom. Ive got so far with it and it works ok but if i try and resize the window randomly with the mouse ( like clicking the bottom right hand corner and squiggle the mouse around it acts weirdly.
View 3 Repliesis there a way to override a MovieClip's parent and stage properties? In a custom class extending the MovieClip class we can override the get parent() and get stage() methods. But is there a way to do it to existing MovieClip?
I mean I have an external swf content (loaded) and assigned to a movieClip. But now, how can I assign the loaded MovieClip to my custom class, so that it "doesn't see" the parent and stage properties?
Or can I override functions of existing classes? Sth like:
override public function myMovieClip["get parent"]():DisplayObjectContainer
{
...
}
I just need to prevent a loaded MovieClip from having access to the main movie's stage.
How do I access Stage Class properties in Custom Class?
Class:
package {
import Main;
import flash.events.*;
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.display.Stage;
public class Run extends Sprite {
[Code] ....
Output:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
I have made a very simple swf in which I have a MovieClip which I have rotated on the stage. When I try to access this rotationX and rotationY properties of this clip using the constructor of the class assigned to this MovieClip they are coming back as 0 even though they shouldn't be. If I put an on rollover event of the MovieClip and trace out these properties here I get the correct values.
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
[Code].....
I also get the correct values when I read the values from the stage timeline.
trace ("TEST "+testMC.rotationX+" "+testMC.rotationY); //returns correct value
Is there a specific event I need to be waiting for which will tell me when the 3d properties are available via ActionScript?
