Assuming calling the same ColdFusion web service and all other factors are identical, is there a difference in performance/speed between using the following two tags?

and
<s:WebService id="MyService" wsdl="http://www.myDomain.com/MyWSFolder/MyService.cfc?wsdl"/>
I'm calling ColdFusion cfc method using RemoteObject method of the Flex.

So you can see that I changed the sequence of the parameter, when I call the cfc method. But it does not worked. It means that <s:arguments> does not pass the named parameter. Is there any solution for that? As you can see that I may have some of the arguments not mandatory so, it must be passed by name.
I'm building a multiplayer card game using Flex on the client side and Java on the server side and I wanted to know if I must sockets and the accept method in order to connect users to the server for in order for them to join a game room or create one or to chat.In the past I've learned how to build a game server which both sides are JAVA and connection was in sockets but now days the client side will be in FLEX which has few ways to connect to a Java server (XML,SOAP,BLAZEDS(AMF)) and I find it hard to understand how to write the Java server in order to do all the features of a game server,especially managing the rooms and sending data back to the users.
In the sockets way, when a user was connecting to the server and he had opened a room, this room was opened on a thread and who ever was joined that room then he was connected to the same thread and sending the messages to the right place was easy, so the problem is understanding how to do the same using SOAP or BLAZEDS.
In our flex/air application we are calling a web service over https.The web service is java based and has, at the moment, an untrusted certificate.When doing a POST to the service with some json, the payload on the server side is pretty garbled.A popup does occur asking whether you want to continue and even when I do and add the untrusted certificate into my keychain (on the mac), the data sent through always comes through mangled.I installed charles http proxy to see the actual traffic and it seems at times I'm getting a SSLHandshakeException back...I'm guessing this is causing the garbled data as ssl isn't being setup properly.

But I am not getting the same httpsession value that is used for login in to the application. I have intercepted the calls using TCPmon also.

View 1 RepliesI working on a game project in Flash AS3. I need to pass data from one class (Game) to other class objects (Ships) on EnterFrame and performance is starting to be a issue. I was wondering is there a difference in performance between calling to the Ship a direct function or dispatching an event which the Ship can listen.
another question is where should I put the enterframe function. Is it better to use only one enterframe function and call the methods dispatch events from there, or it will be wiser to put the enterframe in the different objects (Ships)? note: some Ships are inactive most of the time.
I am working on this cd-rom and have just reached testing stage for part 1 (of 5). There are lots of interactive activities, video and animations. For the activities, I dont know if I am just too tired but there seems to be items which are visible on my .swf on my computer that sometimes are visible and sometimes are not visible on the cd-rom, also in testing yesterday there sere some activities that seemed to not be working correctly (Althought they perform fine on the desktop version, on a reset of the cd-rom they then seemed to work. Is there anything that I need to take into account for the code being read off a CD to make it more bullet proof? I am stressing out a bit at the Unknown factor- I cannot continue to produce this resource if I cannot guarantee how it will perform in real life?

For the touch interaction I'm using just MouseEvents handlers (MOUSE_DOWN, MOUSE_MOVE, MOUSE_OUT, MOUSE_UP) because my app don't need multitouch, now I'm wondering if there is any difference in execution speed, should I use the equivalent touch events or the mouse events are faster?
View 2 Repliesalmost every single one of my classes, starts with the same method. An event listener in the constructor for EVENT_ADDED_TO_STAGE. Then i do all my actual intialising in a beginclass function that listener runs.I've not generally been removing these listeners though. i never thought it would make a difference since i'm only adding these objects once, but i wonder if there's a performance element. it could be for example, that all of these listeners add an extra check each, ehenever any object is added to the display list.

Will I take a big hit in performance using nested ViewStacks? Should I strive to handle all navigation in one ViewStack and push children manually or will the affected performance be negligible?

We have a medium size Flex 3.6 application that contains around 20 different page views (managed via a single lazy ViewStack) each having multiple components. Most use custom renderers.All model data is loaded at startup and changes to model instances are communicated via binding and/or collection change events.Once the user has viewed each page at least once, all page views are instantiated and happily listen to update events.Which in effect means that each time a model instance changes, all interested views receive that event and compute derived data or trigger item-renderers.I have tested and confirmed this behaviour in a proof-of-concept application. Even when setting a list to being invisible, it still listens to collection change events and invalidates any renderer affected.What would you do?
View 1 RepliesI am a .NET programmer working with a Flash designer on a project. The design is that they will create a flash UI (implemented with AS2) to present a questionnaire. After it is completed by an end user, the will send me (a .net web service of some form) the answers to the questionnaire, I will perform a calculation, and I will send a response back (the response will likely be a single integer, though it may be a touple of (integer score, string description).
Neither myself nor the designer is knowledgeable of Action Script. Does anyone have a snippet for such web service calls in AS2? Are there any soap libraries for AS2 that we could use, or should I expose a RESTful interface? Can it be as simple as having the designer concat the questionnaire answers into the query string of the service URL? What would be a typical data format for my response (xml, json, plain text)

I can add the services to the Data Services panel but I have two strange things:
1) when I want to configure the return type he doesn't let me create a new ValueObject type, I only get the bottom datagrid which states: Properties returned by the operation: Property: country_Id, provence_Id, city_Id, id_cdpc, district_Id with the related values on the right side. Why can't I create a new data type on the top?
2) When I accept this and want to add the service call to a button (drag&drop) I get the following error: Error occurred while generating code. Make sure that there are no compiler eroors and try again after reopening the file. Componentn type services.cdpc.CDPC not found... (ps: When I perform a Test Operation everything seems to be ok, I get the expected output values)
I've created a GUI in Flash Builder 4.5-1 with localization (copylocal as admin, created the files, implemented in he GUI...) and all works fluid and very well.I now want to generate a PHP service from my DB and that also works ok.When I try to run the application I get the error he doesn't find: Unable to open 'c:Program Files(x86)AdobeAdobe Flash Builder

When I retrieve the compiler options (additional languages) it works without errors.Do I need additional steps to be able to use "Locale" and "Services" combined?I used to work with Flex Builder 3 and didn't have the issues....

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with if there is a big difference in performance in ActionScript 3 between keeping a class with only public static functions, and utilizing those functions often (as in a frame event at 30fps), and in turning the class into a "normal" class of which I instead make an instance and call the functions via the instance instead.
View 1 RepliesI am using a service that returns JSON (geonames.org) and I'm putting the result in an array and dumping it to a datagrid. Now that works fine for one city like this [URL].. However, I want to call this service multiple times with different city names, so I created an XML list ad figured I would iterate over the city list and get the results.
My question is how do I do this such that 1) all the lists are combined into one arraycollection and 2) this seems like I will have to chain the calls and wait for results which may or may not come back, so I thought I would ask the group about the best practice, and or resources to read and examples to build from.
What material did you use to learn Flex/Air itself, and with ColdFusion + BlazeDS/LCDS?

We recently built a new dev server for flex builder and installed coldfusion 8. We currently have everything working on our old server using coldfusion 7. We copied the services-config.xml and our project over to the new server. It compiled fine, I updated all references to the new server. When I try to run the flex application I receive the following error:

We created a valid crossdomain.xml file on the localhost (which I wouldnt think would be necessary since everything is on the same server)
I have a remoteobject within my main.mxml.I can call a function on the service from an init() function on my main.mxml, and my java debugger triggers a breakpoint.When I move the remoteobject declaration and function call into a custom component (that is declared within main.mxml), the remote function on java-side no longer gets called, no breakpoints triggered, no errors, silence.[code]

I've searched long and hard to find a site that would show me some pseudocode (at least) or an algorithm as to how to implement this type of application. But everything I find are only applications that take in data and do all the work for me to create the graph. I need to actually create it for myself, just a simple one for now. Does anyone know where I can find this? What I want it to do is take data from a database and use it to create the treemap, then express it in a GUI like in the link above. If any specifics are needed I can provide it. I'm trying to do this in Flash Builder using Flex and using ColdFusion as the backend.
View 1 RepliesIn the code below when I call chkAuthentication function from another function the remoteObj.login (login function in my service file (.php)) is called after the remaining code in that function. i.e., the loginStatus is returned from the function before the result-handler function loginResult is called. but my loginStatus is supposed to be set in loginResult function. It seems that the asynchronous behaviour is the culprit. what should I do in order to get the loginResult function to complete first?

I've been tinkering around with Flex RemoteObjects, and I've found that they aren't very well behaved with respect to timing out.First, I can't figure out how to set a timeout on "connect". I know I can set requstTimeout, which will correctly timeout after an initial handshake... But if the server doesn't handshake, the connection doesn't time out (eg, the server accepts the connection, then does nothing with it, the client will just be left hanging).
Second, when a requestTimeout fires (timing out the request), Flex doesn't actually take any steps to tear down the connection - it just leaves it hanging there (no RST or the like). Clearly, this is more than a little bit undesirable. Is there any way to explicitly tear down the connection after the timeout?
I was wondering what is considered to be a best practice when I have multiple components and use RemoteObject for AMF communication with a PHP backend.
Have the RemoteObject in the Main.mxml file with all the methods declared here (with handlers and all) and have all components call functions from the parentApplication, thus having a centralized result and fault handling, but making reusiability more difficult.Have a RemoteObject in each component with only the methods (and handlers) relevant to that component, thus making it easy to have clean, reusable components.
Is it possible to abort a flex remoteObject call? I tried the below method but the http request is still loading in the background:[code]The thing I'm interested in is freeing up the browsers HTTP Pipeline, just like in javascript where you can use abort on the XHR.

Solution: Add the second call to the result handler of the first call, having a token check for multiple originating calls.
