ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash CS5.5 - Font Embedding Horror (bug, Not "does Anyone Know How To Embed Fonts?")
Apr 12, 2012
I am using three fonts of the Helvetica typeface,embedding them with the embed metatag, font files inside project, openType.I noticed that for some reason the bold font looks identical to the roman font.After 4 hours of ____, and testing with five fonts, it turns out that:
if i change the name of all the font files at once, and change the reference to them in the code, all of the fonts work the first time i publish. the second time i publish (without any changes except pressing publish a second time) some fonts overwrite others, randomly, for instance :
roman looks like roman
bold looks like roman,
light looks like roman,
black looks like black,
rounded looks like black.
the only way i can make sure that flash embeds all of the fonts, is to change *all* of their names and publish. additional info:second time i publish the swf filesize is much smaller than first time ( -flash really doesn't embed anything).traces to which fonts are registered show all fonts are there,no errors
using distinct fontnames
publishing cache disabled
restart doesn't help

What I want is to have my application be able to load a .TTF or .OTF file.What I found so far is people embedding their fonts into an .SWF and using the Loader class to load the font that way.That does not work for me because I want people using my system to be able to upload their own fonts, and not forcing them to embed it in an .SWF, because I want to keep my system as simple as possible.

When embedding fonts programmatically, (example here), is it possible to specify certain characters as you might if embedding within the Flash IDE?Here is my code so far, which simply embeds the font. It works, but I am assuming that it is embedding an entire character set.
Code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.text.AntiAliasType;
[code]....

I've been hunting around for a simple opentype font embedding implementation for AS3, but haven't quite found one that worked yet... I tried the most straight forward option of simply adding the font into the library of the FLA, but unfortunatly it didn't go as planned. I am trying to embed the AvenirLight and AvenirMedium fonts, but when I try to add a new font it only ever gives me one option of "Avenir", even though I have several varieties of Avenir installed. It seems like it is defaulting to one of them or something perhaps? A lot of other methods I came across involved using Flex Builder instead, and I don't want to restart my project in Flex instead just to load these OTF fonts.

I am trying to embed a font in my Flash Builder 4.6 project, so far unsuccessful. I searched around and found this fix, adding "-managers flash.fonts.AFEFontManager" to the Compiler, doesn't work. I've embedded tons of images to the same project, but I'm not sure what's going on with the embedding of fonts.

Basically, I was completely stupid. I had a "#" and 2x" ` "s in the actual path to my project. I KNEW having those dumb folder names would screw my stuff up some day! And sure enough it did -with Java, but I moved Eclipse out of there a long time ago and forgot about it.

I am tasked with created a site that handles Japanese characters, and am looking for any insight you can offer for this.My main issue right now is the size spike the site will get if I embed a font like "Arial Unicode MS" with the Kanji character set which has 3174 glyphs. When I compiled an fla with only a textfield and these Japanese characters embed it stands at 731k. So I am looking for options to either eliminate the need to embed the Kanji characters or find a way to limit the number of characters needed to handle the Kanji character set.
1. Which fonts if any come pre-installed on Wins & Mac that natively handle Kanji characters.
2. If there is such a font for Win & Mac does this mean I don't need to embed the Kanji glyphs for the font in a swf, and can be sure any user viewing the site will be able to see the Janji characters, because their OS already can handle displaying Janji characters. For example if I go to a webpage on the internet that has Japanese characters I am able to view the Japanese characters, is this because the browsers themselves have these fonts embedded or is it pulling from my OS to display the Japanese font?
3. If I do need to embed a font to handle the Janji characters do I need to include all 3174 glyphs to cover all possible English equivalents. I read that you can specify a unicode range for a font, believe this only works with CS4 though. I don't know much about unicode ranges let allow the ranges I need for Japanese characters.

I'm trying to embed a font in my project by using url("font.ttf") rather than local("Font Name"), but it doesn't seem to pick it up. The font in question is called "Gotham Bold". When i view the details of the font, the font weight is regular, however when i use local("Gotham Bold") in the css i have to specify fontWeight: bold or else it wont pick it up. But when I use url("folderGotham-Bold.ttf"), and specify fontWeight: bold, it says that font weight is not found for that TTF. If i remove the fontweight, there's no errors, but the font is not applied to the text.

I've recently had to format my computer and now having a problem with the flash actionscript window: the actionscript text looks like bold, or in a different font. The problem is that when I search for something like "flash" and "fonts", no matter which other words I use, always comes a lot of things about fonts for flash files, or for flash embedding fonts, but never for the program itself. Wich font is missing in my system that flash CS3 needs?

I am using the following line before my class declaration .
[Embed(source="C:WINDOWSFontsVERDANA.TTF", fontName="VERDANA", mimeType="application/x-font-truetype", flashType = true)]
But there is no change in the appearance of the Text whatsoever.. I need the text to be crisp and clear.Just like the way it looks when we embed the fonts using the Embed... Button in the Flash IDE.

I have a swf A, which contains no font.If I download into it the swf F1, which contains few characters of Arial, then I'll have the arial font embed into A, no problem with that.But if, then, I download the swf F2, which contains other characters of Arial into swf A, will I be able to use all the embed characters font, only the F2, or only the F1 ?I'd like to have a link to somewhere where this is explained, even in very technical terms : I wasn't able to find one.
EDIT : After few tests, it seems that the player replace the loaded font... How can I merge them, then ?

Is it possible to embed a font in Flash and have it displayed as though it was a device font? In other words, can embedded fonts be aliased?Using the bitmap-text option doesn't work, Flash tends to screw up a lot of the character spacing. I haven't found any pixel fonts that mimic Arial, Verdana and Tahoma accurately. Setting the stage quality to low does alias the fonts but they become fragmented.Using device fonts is an option but, as far as I understand, some browsers/operating systems will take it upon themselves to anti-alias the text.

Is there a way to create embedded "pure as3" swf fonts using compc (without the flex framework integration)? If I embed a font like this in my as3:
package fonts
{
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.text.Font;
[Code].....
which prevents me from using the embedded font in "pure as3" projects. Is there a way to get flex-free fonts using compc?

I just upgraded to Flash CS5. Font embedding is entirely different than it was in CS4. I've been looking for examples online but none seem to show me a solution that matches what I need.
In the project I'm working on, code changes the font a text box uses based on region and language. To keep file size down I created separate swf files with the fonts embedded. That way I only download the font I need. The way I did this and the code I used in CS4 doesn't seem to work anymore.

I'm clear on the new CS5 IDE dialogue for embedding fonts, for example, embedding Arial, no problem, BUT, I want to embed Arial Bold (should be easy, right?), so I:
1. From the dynamic textfield's property panel, select Arial for the family, and Bold for the style.
2. Click embed, the dialogue appears, set up with the Arial-Family and Bold-Style as an entry on the list of embedded fonts.
3. I set a range of characters to be embedded with the font.
4. Click OK.
(Note: We're not assigning this font via actionscript to the textfield, the dynamic textfield is an asset on the stage, etc, so I'm assuming then I shouldn't have to export the font for actionscript)But clearly it's NOT OK, the bold font doesn't render, and I just see the regular Arial font... How can I get an embedded font STYLE to render correctly?

I have generated an swf file that contains my embedded font of specified Unicode range, then I am loading this swf into my application. The code in the generated file for the font, automatically registers the font using the Font.registerFont method. I then load this swf file into my application, I never add it to the display list, I just created an instance of the file so that the code is executed to register the font.
Then I use the font name when I create embedded text fields and there you go it works... well it used to, I am not having any luck at the moment though. Sometimes it displays fine, other times it all appears cut off and I see a few pixels of the text I am trying to display.... Anyone else had a similar issue? Know what it might be? I have created a class below that I am using for the embedded font text, any issues people see with this?

I have embedded fonts "Frutiger 45 Light" inside my Flash library and hence into swf. This works correctly. Now I am loading texts from an XML file where there could be Russian language of texts. Flash loads it perfectly no problem. BUT when I try to assign text to a field.text property, it does not show me correct texts. It shows only some texts and most of other texts is disappeared. Here goes the code.

So, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard spot. I have a stylesheet in my flash document, and if I use the command: story.embedFonts = true; the dynamic textfield does not appear. when I don't include it, it appears fine. the only problem is that I am designing the document to print using printjob(), and if I don't include the embedFonts, the textfield doesn't print.

I need to present chemical formulas with subscripts and superscripts in a dynamic text box. To do this, I've downloaded and embedded the GG Subscript and GG Superscript fonts, created a dynamic text box with Arial as the font, and added ActionScript code to change the font when I need subscripts and superscripts. the following is a simplified version of my code.
[Code].....
I get a compiler error 1119 Access of possibly undefined property html through a reference with static flash.text:TextField. The text box is a dynamic text box, not static, so I'm puzzled.I don't get this error with the GG Subscript code above.

I'm working on font embedding in Flash (flas are compiled using CS5 made previously in CS3). The project is split into a number of separate flas, and I'm having trouble with one particular one. I'm dynamically embedding the fonts using a class I wrote that sits on top of the stage listening for Event.ADDED then searching for textfields that have dynamic text and embedding the font needed dynamically (No efficiency requirements here. I have a check so that I don't bother processing textfields that are already embedded. No textfields in any of the flas (to my knowledge) have fonts embedded.
But some textfields are saying that they are, as in
textfield.embedFonts == true.
In the fla global font embedding, that no fonts are embedded. If I click on the actual textfields embed button, I see that the font of the textfield is in the font list, but no character ranges are embedded. This is leaving me confused, as I want absolutely no fonts embedded in any flas. But the font for the individual textfield is always in the font embed list, no matter how many times I remove it. If I click on the embed button for the textfield to check it there is no embedding then the font is added to the list without any character ranges.

I'm using Flash CS5 and I have a problem with my exported SWF file: it's over 100kb in size. I have 2 vectorial symbols and 4 dynamic text with embed Calibri font boxes which are displaying information from an external XML file. These text boxes are the ones which are generating the most size of my swf file. I need to cut down somewhere, I've searched but I haven't came across a "best practices guide to embedding fonts in a flash file". I find it hard to believe that if you only embed alphanumerical characters of 1 single font your file size reaches >100kb..
