Oct 29, 2010I'm having some problems porting a palette shifted animation system from J2ME to Flash. The system is used within a game that construct characters from separate body parts for e.g. head, left arm, legs, eyes, mouth etc. These can then be tinted and animated. Each of these body parts is coloured using a look up table. There is the original palette, then there are 18 other palettes that can be used to tint the image. This way you can configure different looking characters without having hundreds of different images. Each palette has 398 colours, there are 18 different palettes in total.
Each body part contains a small amount of colours, usually around 10-20. Colour A1, Colour B1 etc... Then the body part can be tinted using another set of colours, for eg Colour A3, B3, C3 etc.. It's simply a 2D array. (I have screenshots that help explain if needed) Now I've been trying to use PaletteMap, without success. I believe it uses a full colour palette (i.e. 255 vals per colour), and can't simply change colour A1 to colour A3 etc.
I also tried threshold, but that doesn't seem to be fit for purpose. getPixel / setPixel is way too slow for my purpose. It needs to be pretty fast as each body part is animated. I have a lot of flash programming experience, but never at such a low level! I might have been using paletteMap / threshold incorrectly, but the adobe docs leave a lot to be desired!

Well let me tell it is, and well, it isn't. This tutorial assumes a basic knowledge of Actionscript, PHP and MySQL. If you have that, it's time to move on. Otherwise, I recommend you do some reading on the subjects... Section 2: Setting up your SWF to receive external data Loading external data into an SWF is a fairly simple task. Although the external text file method is probably the most widely known, it is by far the clumsiest way to get data into your SWF. Of course, this may be your only option of your server doesn't support MySQL/PHP! But for those of us who are fortunate to have these privileges, let me show you how Flash can get external data without having to create additional text files.
Dynamic text fields In order for Flash to get data from an external source, you need to make use of dynamic text fields. Simply place a blank dynamic text field on the stage and make sure you give it a variable name (NB: dynamic text fields have both an instance AND a variable names. In this case we want to focus on the variable name). Note the name you give to the field's variable name, as we'll need it when we write our PHP script. ActionScript 3.0 :: Bitmapdata.hitTest - Bitmap 'emptyBitmap' With Bitmap Data Created
Feb 3, 2009I'm cutting my teeth in actionscript 3 on a game that has a character running through a world. So, I have set up my Hit Testing by using the bitmap data hit test method, since I figured my world is going to be destructible - it'd be nice to update the level and then redraw it and have the character interact with the new change. (That works beautifully) I am however; a bit confused as to how I have my hit Testing set up. I've been messing around with it, and it works for now - but I'm not sure why.. currently, I have a character set up by using a class I built and using a series of animations I created. So, this character has a walking and falling animation, etc. This is a movie clip.
Then there's a bitmap 'emptyBitmap' with bitmap data created - however; I never really added this as a child to the character. This is sized to the dimensions of my character. My level is created as a movielip, then it's drawn to a bitmap - when the level movieclip is changed, the bitmap redraws, and that's how this updates.

It is working fine, BUT I am worried that AS3 may not extract the 'same date format' from different client computers thereby rendering my function useless.Is there a better way of passing date to MySQL? The only problem I'm getting is when the text is loading from the database into the dynamic textfield in the flash movie, it prints either 'false' or '_level0...' The text does eventually load correctly, any way I can get it to print LOADING instead of these two or something similar?
