ActionScript 3.0 :: Dynamic Reference To On Stage MovieClip

Sep 30, 2010

I have 9 MovieClips on stage (p1, p2, p3...), different colors and sizes. I have one AS3 class "Snake" that as an instance is supposed to duplicate one of these MC's as a Shape. The reference to the specific MC is supposed to be on the constructor method. These instances are supposed to be triggered from one global Enter.FRAME event. How can I refer a distinct MC from within a class? I ask this because this MC will be dynamic and its properties ever-changing (position and color). I know this can be solved by adding distinct Enter.FRAME listeners per instance, but I'd rather avoid bad practices.

ActionScript Code:
public function Snake(id:MovieClip) {
body = new Array();
head=new Point(id.x, id.y);
size = id.width;
color = getColor(); // need to have a class variable that refers to the index
[Code] .....

Actionscript :: Reference A Dynamic Movieclip From An Outside Movieclip

Feb 21, 2010

I have built a movieclip (parentMC) that houses two movieclips within it (mcA, mcB).

in mcA, i'm dynamically attaching movieclips from the library through a loop.

in mcB i'm trying to reference a particular movieclip from mcA via "_parent.mcA". Doesn't seem to be working. However, when i reference said movieclips from the loop within mcA - or even parentMC, it works fine.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Reference A Dynamic Movieclip From An Outside Movieclip

Feb 21, 2010

i have created a movieclip (parentMC) that houses two movieclips within it (childA and childB)

in childA, i am dynamically creating movieclips via a loop:

Code:
var newX = 0;
var pagTotal = 8;
for(i=1; i<pagTotal+1; i++){

[Code].....

...and in childB i'm trying to reference one of these created movieclips via "_parent.childA.pagClip01" so on and so forth.

but they dont seem to be working. when i trace the dynamic clip from within childB i keep getting "undefined" in the output. however, I can reference the movieclip from within childA, and even from parentMC no problem.

i've used _root and _level0 absolute paths and still the same failed result.

Actionscript 3.0 :: Reference Movieclip Instance On Stage?

Nov 21, 2010

1) I have a movieclip instance on stage (simple graphical element that represents platforms for a hero to run and jump along). I have placed it on the stage with an external class engine.as and in this class it is called myPlatform and is an object of Platforms.as. The movieClip is called platforms and from a trace(myPlatform.name) the instance name is instance3.

2) I am attempting to access the properties of myPlatform in an Enterframe event loop in my character control and collision class (called hero.as)Basically here is the bit of code I am trying implement within Hero.as :

if (myPlatform.hitTestPoint(x,y,true)) { // if a platform is hit
trace("hitME");
y--;
tGravity = 0; // reset
break;
}

Here's the error that I get:

1120: Access of undefined property myPlatform

This all worked when I was writing actionscipt within the FLA file, on the timeline frame 1.I simply don't know how to access myPlatform from within the external Hero.as class! Do I need to create a variable?

how does one reference a MovieClip instance dynamically in AS 3.0? Example, I create a new instance of a "marker" MovieClip class that inherently has within it a series of embedded MovieClips labeled: "m1", "m2", "m3" etc ... and I want to be able to dynamically reference those embedded MCs.I used to do this all the time in AS 2.0, and can't recall how to do it in AS 3.0.I know it is something like this:

number = 1;
marker = new StaticMarker();
var thisMarker = this.marker.m[number];[code].........

Actionscript 3 :: Reference MovieClip After It Is Added To Stage As A Child

Nov 22, 2011

I am currently having problems referencing a MovieClip child which I add to the Stage from the Document Class. Basically when the MovieClip child is added to the Stage from the Document Class, I want a certain MovieClip already on the Stage to reference it once it is on the Stage.

Also, if it is possible, I don't want the MovieClip referencing the child being added to the Stage to have parameters linking it with the Document Class, because I plan on nesting this MovieClip within another MovieClip later on in the future.

Here is the code for the MovieClip class which is referencing the child once it is added to the Stage:

package com.gameEngine.assetHolders

import com.gameEngine.documentClass.*;

ActionScript 3.0 :: MovieClip (Controlled By Extending Class) On Stage Reference

Jun 2, 2011

I'm currently working on a AS3.0 project in Flash. I have a main movie clip in flash on the stage. This mc contains 3 frames. They represent the pages in my application. In each of those frames are a lot of nested MCs. Such as menu buttons, display content for the MC buttons, etc. Everything is controlled by a class extending from MovieClip. When I run the application and press the green button on the second frame in a nested MC of the main Movie Clip on the stage. The event must jump to the 3th frame in that main MovieClip.

Here's the problem
If I immediately press the green button, everything works great.
But this does not happen when I press a different menu button first.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Dynamic Access Of A MovieClip Created On Stage In Flash?

Mar 26, 2010

I am confronted with a simply yet annoying problem: I manually created a row of MovieClips inside another movieclip container_mc on the stage in the Flash CS4 Editor. The MovieClips are named in the same convention (eg. target_1_mc, target_2_mc, ...target_200_mc).

When I try to access a property of it via AS3 during runtime of the SWF like this, it works:

container_mc.target_0_mc.alpha = 0; But how do I access the MovieClip dynamically? During runtime, a script will determine of which MovieClip i need to access a property. I will get the ID number of the MovieClip I want to access. So I need to be able to to something like this:

var mc_ID:int = 2; ["container_mc.target_"+mc_ID+_mc""].alpha = 0;

Obviously, that doesn't work. When I would create all the target-MovieClips dynamically at runtime, I would simply put them in an array. But in this case I need to work with the existing MovieClips manually created in the Flash Editor.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Make A Reference To A Movieclip Instance That Is In Another Movieclip?

Jul 17, 2011

I am trying to make a reference to a movieclip instance that is in another movieclip.

Here's the deal: I have a main timeline for different pages of a website...then within that I make all of the art on each page into a movieclip so I can do animations every time that main timeline frame is called to, yet still keep my main timeline clean.

Within one page's movieclip I have a few buttons that I want to use to go to other pages by referencing them on the main timeline.I have been using this: (home_about is the about us button on my home page, and frame 31 is on the main timeline).

home_about.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fl_ClickToGoToAndPlayFromFrame_6);
function fl_ClickToGoToAndPlayFromFrame_6(event:MouseEvent) :void
{[code].............

Since this home_about is within another movieclip,I get the access of undefined property error. Do I need to change the code I've pasted above or add in variable definitions to fix this?

CS3 Play (reference) MovieClip Instance From Within MovieClip

May 20, 2009

I am trying to create an interactive graphic. Basically, it's three squares layered on top of each other, with a large square in back, a medium square centered in the middle of the large square, and a small square in front centered in the middle of the medium square.

When you roll over the medium square, say, it expands to almost the size of the large square and some text fades in, and the small square on top of it fades away. When you roll off of the medium square, it goes back to it's smaller size, and the small square fades back in.

Currently, I have the actionscript in the movieclip to make the medium square get larger and smaller (and the text fade in), but I need to somehow reference the instance of the small square movieclip to hide it when I roll over the medium movieclip.

My actionscript for the medium square activity, currently:

Code:
stop();
this.onEnterFrame = function(){
if(rewind == true){

[Code]....

how to have this rolling over action get rid of the small square and then bring it back on roll out.

ActionScript 1/2 :: Reference The Stage From Within A Class?

May 25, 2010

I'm trying to get a small popup (a volume bar) to work from within a class.I made a piece of actionscript code that creates an empty movieClip and draws the bar into it and made it onto a class. The only thing I now have to do to add the bar to a programm, is create an instance of that class. Nothing needs to be added to the stage.The problem I encounter is that I need the bar to stay on top. New movieclips always get higher depths (using getNextHighestDepth()), so that's a problem.Calling swapDepths() for every new movieclip is far too complex and afaik there is no such thing as "bring to front" in actionscript, it only exists at design time, not at runtime.

So I though I'd use 2 layers/movieclips in the timeline, one for the volume bar and one for the rest, and add an empty movieclip to both.This way I know that all children I add to one movieclip will alway lay below anything I add to the second movieclip. (or is there an easier way to accomplish what I need? Levels maybe? I've never looked into levels, I only know they exist when loading a clip)This means I need to add a some extra stuff to the stage at design time, but if this fixes the issue.. ah well.But how can I access that movieclip from within a class? The reference "_root.volumeBarPlaceholder" works from within the main actionscript, but not from within a class because I get the compiler error "There is no property with the name '_root.volumeBarPlaceholder'";

ActionScript 3.0 :: Reference Stage From Within A Subclass?

Aug 9, 2011

I'm playing around with some classes from my Learning AS 3.0 book in an attempt to understand them. I have a main (document) class, and a class called NavigationBarXML.

Because the buttons for the nav bar are all set up in the subclass NavigationBarXML, I would like to position the nav bar relative to the stage (think btn1.x = stage.stagewidth - 50) from within this class. I understand that you cannot deal directly with the stage from a subclass and that you must add it to the display list before you can reference the stage from within this class.

How would I set up the main class so that I can reference the stage from my subclass so that on browser resize, my nav bar is positioned relative to the stage?
