ActionScript 3.0 :: Nested Textbox Not Displaying Text?

Aug 19, 2009

I made a movie clip to show instructions for a study people will participate in. I wanted to make it look nice so it has a lot of movement and fades and stuff. This required the use of more nested movie clips than i probably need. However, now when I want to attach a string var to a text box in the movie clip, it doesn't show whencompiled.Code:instructions_mc_m.large_instuctions_mc.large_instructions_tb_container.large_instructions_tb.text=matchedInstrThere are no errors, so I'm assuming the path is correct (and i dbl checked it anyway)

var items = channel_xml.firstChild.firstChild.childNodes;
box.text1.text = title.firstChild.firstChild.nodeValue;
menu_md._visible = false;

How to simply grab the info in the description tags and whack it in my dynamic text field?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Textbox.text On Frame Before Textbox Exists?

Nov 24, 2003

I have some button code on frame one. that looks like this:

[AS]on (release, keyPress "<Enter>") {
mylogin = new LoadVars();
mylogin.password = password;
mylogin.username = username;

[code]....

basically sending and recieving variables from a php page. I want to be able to specify what my textbox on frame 5 says in the onLoad statement. Is this possible?

Currently the only way I have been able to get the text to display is either to use the textbox variable and declare that in the onload statement, or to put textbox.text = mylogin.message; on the actual frame.I doubt there is a way to do it, because the actual textbox hasn't be created yet, but if there were a way, that would be nice.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Displaying Dynamic Textbox Once Masked

Aug 23, 2009

I'm having trouble displaying a dynamic textbox once I apply a masking layer over it.Basically, i'm running the following code on the textbox:txt1. text = "" + myXML.quote[MovieClip(this.root).counter]This is stored in a layer on the timeline called "txt". It runs fine, displays the text without an issue.What I want to do is mask this layer though, and for some reason, once I mask it partially, nothing at all will display in the text box.Can I refer to the textbox differently than txt1.text, so that the code will still find it and fill it fine?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Loading Data Into A Dynamic Textbox Thats Nested In A Loaded Movie Clip

Jul 25, 2010

Well this is the problem right here. In my flash movie, I made it so a member from my PunBB Forum can login using their login information from the forum, This is using the LoadVars and it loads the variables into flash and displays the username. In the php script i made it so it will display profile information that user has on the forum, this is where the problem comes in.. I can trace the data perfectly fine in the output panel when you are successfully logged into flash.

I can also display the data in Dynamic text boxes IF they are on the main stage.. I need to be able to load the data of the user inside of a movie clip.. that is loaded when you click "User Profile" on the menu, Once the movie is loaded, no data is displayed. Yes i have all the instance names and paths correct, but no matter what i do I cannot load the data into this movie clip. So me thinking it just wouldnt work, I tried making a profile page on a different keyframe in the timeline, That also did not load the data onto another frame.

Professional :: Displaying A Nested Unordered List?

Apr 27, 2010

I have a Flash page that goes out and reads an XML file, then displays the information in it.  Most of the time, it works great.  However, when it comes to nested lists, it doesn't work.  I am using CDATA so that I can use HTML code to display the information as intended.  But Flash absolutely refuses to display a nested list correctly.  For example, if I put in there <ul><li>item 1 <ul><li>subbullet 1</li><li>subbullet 2</li></ul></li></ul>, it displays everything as if I had made each of them individual list items under one master <ul></ul>.

There's got to be a way to get Flash to understand and display a nested list.  It's a simple thing to do, I know it.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Displaying XML Data In Nested Movie Clips?

Sep 18, 2009

I'm attempting to create a movie where 100 different facts are faded in and out sequentially. The text will need to be updated monthly so I figured I'd use the dynamic text feature along with an XML file to streamline the updating process. I've worked through Kirupa's Displaying XML Data in Flash tutorial (which was very well presented) and was able to get it to work while understanding the theory of how it worked. However I can't seem to get it to function when applied to my particular application.

After 4 hours of troubleshooting, I think I've isolated the problem to the actionscript component: I think (and I could be wrong) that something needs to reference the nested movieClip that contains the dynamic text layer. It works fine if everything happens on the first frame of the _root timeline. But any elements that I try to bury within a movie clip fail to display. I'm using the code from the tutorial as follows:

xmlData = new XML();
xmlData.ignoreWhite = true;
xmlData.onLoad = loadXML;
xmlData.load("content.xml");

[code]....

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Nested MovieClips Not Displaying Relative To Each-other?

May 16, 2010

I am creating a film strip of thumbnails and am dynamically creating the thumbnails from an xml file. All this works great. The issue becomes the fact that I need for the filmstrip to resize when the window is resized and add or remove the number of the thumbnails as necessary. In order to calculate where the last thumbnail should be, I'm using the following code to calculate the x position:

PHP Code:

var lastX = rightArrow.x - (thumbWidth + 10);

where rightArrow is actually filmstrip.filmnav.rightArrow. I get the correct answer - but when I add the thumbnail to the movieclip filmstrip.panelscontainer.thumbcontainer, it's actually on top of the rightArrow. Clicking on both of them to see where Flash thinks the X is will show that Flash this the X of the thumbnail is at 607 and flash thinks the X of the thumbnail is 731, which is as it should be -- so why is the thumbnail so far to the right?The first thumbnail should always be x=10 and that is working fine and I'm currently not trying to layout the other thumbnails because they were all screwed up with a similar problem.

Professional :: TLF Text Direction - Not Displaying The Text Icon Cursor And Don't Allow To Insert Text Inside

Aug 28, 2011

When I create a TLF text area that is editable at runtime (which means that it can get a user input at runtime) I set the text direction to the 'right-to-left' definition in both the 'container and flow' and the 'paragraph' sections and set the language for Arabic or Hebrew at the 'locale' setting. I also set the text alignment to the 'align to start' mode. Now at runtime there's a stange thing. When I try to click with the mouse cursor on the editable TLF text-box, it's not displaying the text icon cursor and don't allow me to insert text inside.

But when I move my mouse cursor over the right side of the editable TLF text box, it change his appearance to the familiar text cursor which indicate that if you click here you will be able to insert text input inside. So my problem is how can I make it that only when I will hover over the TLF text box itself, the mouse cursor will be changed to text cursor icon and when I will hover beside its right side, it will remain at the normal cursor mode.

IDE :: Display Dynamic Text When The Instance Name Of The Text Box To Do The Displaying Is Dynamically Stored Within A Variable?

However, what if there is a variable, called myVariable that stores the instance name of the text box. With only one text box I know it's pointless, but for the sake of example, lets leave it simple. So, suddenly the code looks like:

Professional :: Dynamic Text Field Not Displaying Text Even When Font Is Embedded?

Jan 16, 2011

So, I have some basic actionscript code.  It's a legacy site, so I'm using AS2.  The line of code simply does this:

myField.text = "some text"

So, I select the text field on the stage, then ensure the font is embedded.  All the glyphs I want are checked, but then when I compile and test, the fonts don't show up when the code is executed.  Instead, the textfield is blank!  What happened?!  Where did the text go?

I should mention that the .swf which I compile is loaded into another parent .swf during runtime.  If that parent .swf does not contain embedded fonts, is that why it's broken?

Actionscript :: Flash Displaying Weird Text In A Dynamic Text Field?

Mar 2, 2011

I am working in Flash CS5 and I have placed a text field (dynamic, classic text) on the stage. I am accessing it through Actionscript on the same frame like this:

var ct:TextField = TextField(getChildByName("Temperature"));
ct.text = "Hello world";

What ACTUALLY appears is this: So... The H, Ls, and D are gone. Mysteriously. Without warning. I am sitting here utterly confused. Is this just me?

PS. The text field is set to Myriad Pro Bold, a font on my computer, so it isn't like it's a font problem.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Displaying Variable As Text In Dynamic Text Field?

May 24, 2010

This should be basic enough but I'm having trouble troubleshooting it

var instrument:MovieClip=banjo;
instrument_txt.text="The " + String(instrument)+ " has been selected!";

I wanted this to result in dynamic text field displaying

"The banjo has been selected!" but it results in "The [Object MovieClip] has been selected!".

Is String(var) wrong command to use? The only reason I could think why it's not working is, that the variable has been stated as 'MovieClip' instead of Number or Text. What can be done in the case of MovieClip if this is correct?

P.S I'm wondering if there're rules on asking questions on this board... I've asked two for today already and they would be considered pretty 'basic' ones to professionals / experienced users on this board >_<

For ex - See below imageNow , as you can see, second line in the text file starts right where first line ends.But flash doesn't display it like that. I have hundreds of lines and in most cases flash spaces consumes less space then a text file. The font in both text field in Flash and notpad is to Arial so the font shouldn't be a problem.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Too Much Text In Textbox?

Oct 21, 2011

I have a textbox (actually, quite a few, I am working with lots of actionscripting/manipulating text), and it seems like the more text that's in the textboxes, the slower flash processes things. I understand like if I had 2 billion characters or something, but were talking a major slowdown between a difference of 300 and 800 words. I would think that flash should be able to handle that. Some are htmlText boxes, and so this added 'hidden' html tags creates lots of slowdown as well. I have cleared variables after using them, and it has helped somewhat, but not very noticably.
