ActionScript 3.0 :: Redraw Components On Parameter Change?
Mar 17, 2010
I have a component I have built in AS3 that takes a parameter which is likely to change with each instance of the component on stage. ie. the parameter will be different on frame2 to what it was on frame1.
The problem I am having is that flash will not recognise the change of parameter and redraw the component unless I do something like giving it a different instance name or putting it on a new layer. I find this very puzzling as I have the exact same component in AS2 and am not required to perform these actions to get it working.

I want to create a component with a variable/parameter that is a method it calls when (clicked on for example). In "Flash UI Components.fla" the they do this and I studied the code but cant get it to work. The Push Button one has a click handler, but the way it is actually called in the script is like this:
this.handlerObj[this.clickHandler](this);
That bracket/parenthesis thing is not working.

I have a DataGrid bound to an XMLConnector and XMLDataSet. The XML data loads fine into the components. However, I cannot get the value of the selected index using: my_datagrid.selectedIndex
The call works fine if you use addItem to populate the grid.
Is there an issue being that the datagrid.selectedIndex parameter is bound to the XML components?

Am working on a flash component that is supposed to display some dynamic text which might include HTML formatting. This text is displayed in a label component (AS3), and i would want it to render correctly, like create a line break when <br> is inserted, but it doesn't!
So am wondering what the supported HTML tags in the label component, and in general all other flash components?

I am just learning actionscript, and I need some help please with a problem I'm having. I am borrowing the actionscript example for a simple login that comes with flash 8. There is a line in the code as follows:
login_lv.sendAndLoad("http://www.flash-mx.com/mm/login.cfm", result_lv, "POST");
The problem is I need to be able to change the url parameter externally so that the flash file doesn't need to be republished everytime I need to change the url. I need to be able to change the url with some kind of external config file, or parameterize the url somehow, I'm really not sure?

With mx:Box I can set the direction to be either "horizontal" or "vertical". I'd like to reverse the order of the components in the box though. For example:
Before:
|button1| |button2| |button3|
After:
|button3| |button2| |button1|
I've created a custom component that lives in a mx:Box and would like to do this in as simplest a way as possible.

I have a custom component on which I have bound an array collection to one of its proeprties: <comp:MyComp id="comp" prop="{images}" /> images is an arraycollection In the components' code I would like to know which event to listen on everytime images updates props. I tried a setter on props but the setter only gets called once when props is first set. I tried the collection event but I get "Update" events sent on top of 'add' and 'remove' events and I would rather not have to manage those. So is there an event(flex or otherwise) that is fired every time a component property is updated by a bindable property?

I have a component that contains a list that implements a custom renderer. I use this component as a tooltip, keeping one in memory and just altering the databindings as necessary.
Something like this where TTComponent is a class that extends Canvas:
<s:TTComponent>
<s:BorderContainer>
<s:List id='lstItems' dataProvider="{data.Items}" width="50%" borderVisible="false" contentBackgroundColor="#222222">
[Code]....
Now, what happens is when data containing many items is set to tt.data, the list resizes itself larger and displays fine. However, after this, if data containing few items is set to tt.data, the component momentarily displays larger than it needs to be, then resizes itself smaller.
What I'd like to do is have the component resize itself before it displays, so I don't see the resize on screen.

ActionScript Code:
for (var v = 0; v <= 10; v++) {
var flv = attachMovie("FLVPlayback", "my_FLVPlybk" + v, v+1, {width:20, height:20, x:100, y:20});
}
With this code I have created 10 flvplayback components and inserted in the screen. How to access to each of this components i have created and change parameters like pause() them stop() play() add contentPath etc., I need that only after the loop is finished not while the loop is still on. Something like
findComponent("my_FLVPlybk1").stop();

I've got a simple function to change the colour of a textInput component box - problem is it doesn't work. I can't see why not - surely this should be really simple, I can't understand why it is so hard?[code]...
Is it even possible to change the color of the font in textInput components?

I would like to change the parameters of an object, or values like width and height, via javascript but I need a very lightweight method. In the end some of the thing that I want to change would be width, height and a parameters src value. So far I'm having no luck of getting it by id $('#test').attr('src','test.html') or the javascript method of getElementById().
What is the best - lightweight - method to do this?
An object being like this:
<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="600" height="500" data="http://www.thisembed.com" style="margin:0px;padding:0px">
<param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" />

How can I enable or disable a group of components in flex (flash builder 4)?
For example, if I have a window with several fields, I want to disable them based on the users permissions.
I know I can add the enabled="true" or "enabled="false", and I can also use enabled="{writeAccessVar}"
However, I am looking for more ideas, as I might have more than one group of fields on the screen, or more complicated user permissions.
For example, I will currently have one field with write access, the other fields on the screen read only for a certain user level.
For a higher level user, all fields are writable. Lower level, all are read-only.

However, I can't find these padding styles in spark.components.Button, and the documentation [URL] doesn't show that spark Button has those styles.

Can we skip an optional parameter and assign value to the parameter after the skipped one?
For example I have a function:
public function Dialog(message:String,title:String="Note",dialogsize:int=99):void
{
}
I can easily call the function with a message and a title:
Dialog("HELLO","Intro");
Is there a way to skip the title and just pass in the dialogsize? I've tried it but can't make it work:
Dialog("HELLO",,dialogsize);
Is it possible to skip some optional parameters without using (rest) parameter?

I am building a scene which consists of 1 main mc containing all the elements in the scene. Inside this mc some of the layers are pushed back in Z space to create a parallax effect and on the main timeline the scene mc scrolls in relation to
the mouse position (much like this ) the scene mc is 5953px by 1716px and all the mcs contained inside consist of line drawn vector illustrations imported from illustrator. My problem is that when the scene is scrolling, every so often there is a delay were the scrolling slows down. It eventually catches up with itself causing it to jerk back to its original speed. When I test the movie and turn on redraw regions I notice that flash is having trouble redrawing some of the mcs.
I have tried optimising my mcs, turning cache as bitmap on the static ones and even replacing some of the static ones with bitmap versions but none of these seem to solve the problem. I was wondering if there is a solution to this or any other steps I can take to ease up on the redraw Also I am having a problem with the mcs breaking up as the scene scrolls, is there a way I can easily apply an anti alias to them?

function reDrawFront() { var temp=frontLockright.localToGlobal(new Point(0,0)); var temp2=frontLockleft.localToGlobal(new Point(0,0));

I want my sprite to redraw when the information in my comboBox is changed but I cant figure out how to do it. I've tried a variety of things with no luck so I've deleted my attempts and below is my code how I want it to work with the exception that how it is now just draws the sprite on top of the other one instead of replacing it (or resizing it??).

var items:Array = [ {label:"Select your Waterway"},
{label:"Klamath at Orleans", data:klamath_orleans},
{label:"Scott at Fort Jones", data:scott_fort_jones},

I have an app w/ a login screen. When the user hits "enter", the state changes to "login" & a child component is triggered to load (though the child stays invisible at the moment). The child contains many functions that the user needs upon logging in (ie their screenname & settings are retrieved from a database). The following is included in 'Parent':
<local:comp id="localComp" includeIn="login" includeInLayout="false" visible="false"/>
<mx:Button label="login" click="currentState='login'"/>
<mx:Button label="logout" click="currentState='Default'"/>
My problem is when a user logs out (state changes to 'Default') & then logs back in (state changes back to 'login') the child doesn't get "triggered" again & the functions w/in the child don't reload. Is there a way to force my child to refresh?
Note: While it would be easier to just move the child's functions to the parent it is complex...I moved these functions to the child to make it easier to follow
UPDATE: I even tried adding an "exitState" to my state:
<s:State name="login" exitState="removeElement(localComp)" />
This doesn't work either, as I get an error: "RangeError: Index 0 is out of range."
UPDATE: Even though you are allowed to call a child's function from a parent, my problem is that the child needs to be "created" in order to not show errors. It makes no sense to me why the flex team would make something like removing & adding children so complicated.

My question is: how do I redraw a shape using only code? Short comment on the task itself. I've an eventListener, which grabs clicks on stage and stage resizes. Both execute the same function - redrawEvents(evt:Event). The stage contains a number of blocks, which represent certain events. On each redraw these blocks are repositioned, and also lines (which represent connections between events) are drawn.
Any way to reposition all the blocks, but I got stuck on redrawing lines. I'm using a single shape to hold all the lines, because lines, unlike blocks, are not interactive. Since the whole point of the application is creating sets of interconnected events, I have to modify this shape every time a new block is created, which also calls redraw function. Here's the code I use to modify the shape
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,redrawEvents);
function redrawEvents (evt:Event) {
var lines:Shape = new Shape();
lines.graphics.lineStyle(2, 0xFFFFFF, .75);
lines.graphics.clear();
for (var k:int = 0; k < connections.length; k++){
lines.graphics.moveTo(eventList[connections[k][0]].x + 50, eventList[connections[k][0]].y + 50);
lines.graphics.lineTo(eventList[connections[k][1]].x + 50, eventList[connections[k][1]].y + 50);
} addChild(lines); }
However, whenever the shape is modified, it still leaves the 'older versions' of itself on screen, and i don't want that. I tried to create and delete instances, various type conversions.

i am doing a project to learn as3 as it's fun to do and useful for creating mockups in (interaction designer).
The project consists of a banner swf containing generated stuff and another swf which is the main project. In the banner i have mouseover textfields with an explaining text that is shown when moving the mouse over movieClips. The problem is that when a textfield overlaps the main swf (they are stacked with css, z-index), the main swf doesn't redraw the previously covered area resulting in a white patch where the textfield was shown.
One way of doing it i guess would be to on each MOUSE_OUT function, where the textfield is removed from stage by removeChild(textThing), also connect to the main swf by localConnect() and somehow force it to redraw.
