I have an external class in a .as file, my problem is that I can't access text box elements on the stage. Code like stage.txtfield.text or this.parent.txtfield.text does not work. The txtfield is the instace name of a Dynamic Text field.
View 4 RepliesIm trying to get used to packages and classes in AS3. Im used to put all code on the first frame of the timeline, but now i have 442 lines of code on the first frame. Yeah 442. And this is for a game engine so i thought i should put it inside some classes to make it easier to read an reusable. However, I want to set all the stats of the bullet in an external class called "Rock". In the main class I just attach a movieclip to the stage, and the behavior of this MC is supposed to be controlled by the Rock class. The problem is I dont know how to access the bullet variable from the Rock class.
I am building a pretty basic app which pulls data from an XML file and displays it on my site. It's basically for displaying reviews of other sites so each record has a title, image, description, rating and URL field.I have got as far as being able to display one record at a time, however I would like to dynamically add new placeholders depending on how many reviews there are for a given category.In Flex you can do this with I think it is called the repeater component. However I am not sure the best way to achieve this in flash? So to summarize I guess I am looking for a way to dynamically add new elements to the stage for each record in my external XML file for a given category.

How can I access other objects on the stage in Flash inside of my two custom classes? If I want an object tween to occur when one of my custom buttons is clicked how do i reference the object that I want to tween if I'm inside of my custom class.

I'm currently working on a Flash platform game and I'm trying to make each level have its own class that defines a hitTest function (Each class is linked to the MovieClip of the level), which would allow the character to walk on the level. Whenever I try to import the subclass into the Document class, errors start popping up and it is driving me crazy (Error 1120: Access of undefined property)

I found this code for a contact form at msinghinteractive easy-to-use-flash-as3-contact-us-form-class and it dynamically creates input fields and buttons. I didnt like the dynamically drawn submit and reset buttons, so I added my own MCs(my 'buttons') to the stage. I tried modifying the code and took out the dynamically drawn buttons..However, I cant figure out how to add Event Listeners to the buttons which exist on the stage--Im getting undefined errors...The fla is directly associated to a main.as class which just determines the parameters of the .as class it is tied to -to set the size of the Contact form.This is the entire class:

where btn is the instance name of my submit button MC.My problem is that because my buttons exist on the stage I dont know how to add Event listeners within that class---or rather doing that doesnt work because the listeners are throwing that undefined property errors--I gave them instance names...

Basically I need to link an external class to the button, which will in turn when clicked play the beat_mc. I've given the button the class of myTasteButton. It's not working but I'm not getting any errors.
I have to use many custom classes for a project, each class includes lots of elements(methods,properties) and I generally forget their names when coding. Is there any editor which I can enumarate the elements of my classes after pressing "." like Flash's built in classes?
View 8 RepliesI'm working on a lot of different flash applications Most of those applications are visual and involves the main stage.I started oop a while ago and i got to a point that %99.9 percent of my code is extracted to different classes.There is one thing that repeat on a regular basis on all of my apps, passing the Stage variable to the different classes....It's working great but it doesnt feel right that i need to pass the main stage as a variable between the different classes,is there a better way to access the stage from external classes ? can i make the main stage a static property and access itwithin all the objects in the application ?

I have two swf files, where one (lets call it A) is supposed to load and display the other(B).
The first swf (A) is using the Loader class in AS3 to load the other. In fact the loading code in A is an exact copy of the Adobe example code from the livedocs for Loader.
The other swf (B) just spins some meaninless graphics in a loop, and has a document class that has one line of code in its constructor:
trace("B's stage is: " + stage);
When I start swf A, the loading of swf B starts fine. The progress is reported as traces all the way up to 100% before swf B's constructor is called and the following is traced:
B's stage is: null
THEN the complete handler is triggered (yes. AFTER the constructor was called for B with no stage).
The problem is that I really need B to have a stage for my project to work, as I will actually use stage, instead of just tracing it. I have really tried everything to get this working. Is there no way so soothe B into having a valid stage before its constructor is loaded?

There are many tutes on the web on how to make interface elements, such as drop down menus, or accordion menus. The example Menu Class includes all the event listeners and functions. It invariably ends with the CLICK event function tracing some comment so you know it works. But no information on how to implement the Menu Class. So say you have a Main Document Class that instantiates a Menu Class. How can you pass the CLICK event back to the Main Document Class to do something with it? As far as I can see, the Menu Class can build the menu but all the listeners and functions for it have to reside in the Main Document Class. Or do you have to build a custom Class that extends the Event Class?

I had no problem working with xml in cumbersome AS2, but apparently it's menat to be easier in AS£, however I'm having a problem getting the data from this piece.
Basically I need to be able to access the id & src.

Is there a way to access the DOM-Elements of a mxml file in a way that you can in JS (e.g. using Prototype or jQuery)?
I need to know if a top-level element has a child (sub-sub-...-childs) with a certain id.
In JS (using prototype) it would be something like:

Does anyone know if its possible to access children elements in a SWC? I have created some MC's and inside of some of these MC's I have some dynamic textFields. I export the content to a SWC and load it into my Flex project. No problem loading it or accessing the parent elements, they display fine. But I want to access the textfields nestes in the MC's and modify the text. When I debug the app, I can see the textfields as child elements. It's typed as a TextField and the Instance Name is the same as input in the Flash IDE but I cannot access it. When Flex compiles it throws an error saying it doesn't recognize the method. I've tried to insert actionscript on the timeline, linked external classes and nothing can be accessed.

I have an object, myObj, that has no key/value pairs, only elements. When i trace it out i get the elements listed inbetween curly braces {item1, item2, item3, item4} I can access the first element by calling myObj.first( ) and I guess there are other methods I could try to call on the object - such as myObj.last( ) - but I can't seem to access the other elements in the object. I would like to be able to do something like:
