ActionScript 3.0 :: Dynamically Typecast Or Classcast A String?
Mar 16, 2010I would like to dynamically typecast or classcast a string. How would I do that?
For example:
var str:String = "mc";
var clip:MovieClip = MovieClip(str);

I am developing a small game and I read external text files for points per question. I use the kirupa's method in reading from file the simple way -
score_onepic1_1pc1=3&score_onepic2_1pc1=-7&score_onepic3_1pc1=-3&score_onepic4_1pc1=-5
While running the program and at this statement -
_root.txtScore=_root.txtScore+this.score_onepic2_1 pc1;
, the score gets concatanated rather than summimg them up. Is there any way to specify explictly that the expression is an math rather than string operation??
I'm developing a menu driven application with flex and php (ZendFramework). The menu is my main swf, each form is an extra swf loaded with SWFLoader. For the communication with php I'm using AMF3 value objects.My problem is that I get a class cast exception with these value objects, if the form swf is loaded once again.menu item one with a data grid is selected, every operation in the data grid is possible menu item two is selected menu item one is selected once again: any operation in the data grid causes a class cast exception.I tried two different ways of class cast:
var po:pmsPOsVO = pmsPOsVO(dataGridPOs.selectedItem);var po:pmsPOsVO = dataGridPOs.selectedItem as pmsPOsVO;
The first method is causing the following error:

What i am trying to attempt is dynamically changing a string/URL, for example if i have....
www.example.com/VIDEO/video1.flv
and then when i have captured this url (above) using the standard (mc._url) i then want to change this output like so..
www.example.com/NEWVIDEO/video1.flv
So I basically want to change a directory name. I know this is possible but im not quite sure how to pull it off!
I created a dynamic textbox with an instance and wrote a script to load text into the textbox during runtime. Everything is works fine. But the client wants some words to italicize and can't find a solution for this. Check my script below.[code]...
View 5 RepliesI'm trying to read xml fields (with actionscript 3), but the problem is that I choose which field to read dynamically. For example, I may need to read test19 or test39 or test12 or anything else.
var value:Number = event.result.test19;
var value:Number = event.result.test39;
var value:Number = event.result.test12;
Is there a way to construct that event.result.test19 part dynamically? Something like the code idea below

I want to load one out of 18 different instances from my library (exported as mc1-mc18). In AS2 this was simple! I fetched the variable (whC) that contained the name of the movieclip to be loaded and just put it into attachMovie
AS2:
Code:
_loc.attachMovie(whC,"clip"+k,this.getNextHighestDepth());
In AS3 do I have to use this long if/else statement to make it work the same?
Code:
public function fetchTile(whC:String):MovieClip {
if (whC=="mc1") {
fetched= new mc1();

I create a new object. My new object will always have a labelField because it has to be added to a dataProvider in a ComboBox. The problem is my next property. Each object in the dataProvider has a dataField property that has a string value [eg: 'code' or 'isoCode'].[code]
View 1 RepliesThroughout different times in my app I have to load, and then later on delete, a series of movieclips from the library.They all have the prefix "mc_".[code]
View 2 RepliesI know that there is no such function as getElementByName in Flex but I also now that you can do this["object_id"] to get the element of the application u're in.What about getting an element inside another element?I've tried making element["id"] ? But in my try-catch it always runs the "catch" part..how do I get an element inside another element just having it's id in dynamically created string form?
View 2 RepliesIn Actionscript and Adobe Flex, I'm using a pattern and regexp (with the global flag) with the string.match method and it works how I'd like except when the match returns multiple occurrences of the same word in the text. In that case, all the matches for that word point only to the index for the first occurrence of that word. For example, if the text is "cat dog cat cat cow" and the pattern is a search for cat*, the match method returns an array of three occurrences of "cat", however, they all point to only the index of the first occurrence of cat when i use indexOf on a loop through the array. I'm assuming this is just how the string.match method is. I want to find the specific indices of every occurrence of a match, even if it is of a word that was already previously matched.

But I keep getting an "Error #2030: End of file was encountered." This is (probably) because the class I'm serializing is too big for the "String" object type in AS3. Is there a limitless object for storing an array of characters (or better yet binary), or am I going to have to make my own class? (like one with an array of strings)
I am trying to include double quotes in a string but logic says it would just close the string. I know in html you would use something like ". In flash...I havent the slightest.Anyone know how to go about this?
View 1 RepliesI have a String variable in my flex (flash builder 4) application containing CSV data. I need to allow the user to download this data to a local file. For example, giving them a "csv" button to click and it might present them with a save file dialog (and I would be sending the contents of my string variable).Is this possible / how ?I am using the ResuableFX component for the datagrid to csv. This the code I ended up with that works to save the string to a text file for the user (in a web browser):
var dg2CSV:DataGrid2CSV = new DataGrid2CSV();
dg2CSV.includeHeader=true;
dg2CSV.target=adgEncounters;

I really don't understand why this won't work? I've made a test which sends some POST data to a script on my page which works fine.[code]

View 1 RepliesBasically I'm trying to output the contents of an XML document into a dynamic text field (as loaded - not just its node values and content - the entire thing - into a variable called _root.log). The text field is set to show the variable value of _root.log.This is the actionscript...

Is there a method for string URL Encoding?

Im playing around with the last.fm api... Specifically the "getLovedtracks" call.... [URL] This is a weird one that I have never come across... The above call requires a username to return a track listing so if I hard code the username into my class like this.... var username:string = "aidanmack" No problems the call works... if I make that username equal to a dynamic text box string that has "aidanamck" typed into it..
so something like... var username:string = mystage.textbox.text
the last.fm api wont except this... I get user does not exist But if I check the call with the charles proxy Flash is defo sending the username "aidanmack" So I wonder if its to do with have how last.fms api interprets the string?
I need to be able to pass some variables FROM flash and append it to the end of my address. I assumed that if I used LoadVars, I can append the vars to the end of the string like this:
ActionScript Code:
send_btn.onRelease = function ()
{
var my_lv:LoadVars = new LoadVars();

I am sending a string to asp from flash that looks like this;
[CODE].....
The problem is when asp (probably php too) reads this string, it reads it like this
[CODE]....
Now this sucks, is there a way to encrypt my flash string so asp will read the string corectly? I know asp is url encoding the flash string, but this bit of info does not seem to help.
If i have an ASP page that is returning variables (and I can see them in the debugger) how do i consentrate a string to call that variable?
ie:
variables being returned are named:
"res1", "res2", "res3"...etc
for (var i = 0; i < 10; i++) {

I have a very general requirement that seemed very simple: Step 1: Load a new external JPEG image into a MC with a string var encoding a string caption in the URL link (VALUE="../fadeTest.swf?someTextVar=TestCaption") within the EMBED / OBJECT sections. I know how to do this and it semed to work fine. STEP2: When the JPEG is loaded I would like the substituted Text to Fade In over the JPEG. The JPEG should also fade in before the Text. The fade rate should be programmable.

I am looking for a way to check if any sting of the Array is matched to the string that in the TextField. In the code it should be something like that:
Code:
var TestString:Array = new Array ("chicken", "cat", "dog");
function LookStringArray(){
if (TestArrayTextfield_txt.text == (anyString.TestString)){

I have an Object which stores pairs for a find and replace that I perform on up to 1500 Strings at a time.The Object is populated with pairs using a method that will accept a String and then store this as a property with the value being an automatically assigned base 36 number, like this:[code]nextShort returns an automatically incremented value being the subject of .toString(36), so running the above a few times might make _pairs look like this:[cod]ehowever in my mind I foresee a massive problem in a case where I might want to "shorten" 2000+ Strings and the _pairs Object has at the same time has over 500 pairs.That ends up being 1,000,000 iterations all up which obviously doesn't seem very efficient at all.
