I'm creating a flash project and would like to pilot the most variables (eg: colors, texts, sizes, ...) from a single XML file and then spread them in my document class.

Right now I got no errors but I got nothing when tracing the "yourName" var.
I've been sorting through the XML docs and i've bumped my head into a bit of a question. So, to preface, I have been able to load the XML successfully, but I want to be able to use my own XML loader class to load the XML and then be able to reference it from the document class. Also, I'd like to be able to send a file path to the loader class when I call it.

View 9 RepliesFor the example, there's a single FLA with a document class "main.as." In the public class main.as package, there is a public variable: "var example:String='example';." Inside of the FLA, there is one movie clip in the library and it is assigned a custom base class "sub.as." The movie clip is then placed on the first frame of the stage so its constructor is run at runtime and reads the value of example.
What is the proper way to get the value of "example" in the root document class? Using "root.example" in the sub.as class to target the document class returns an error and when I trace "root", I get "null." Main.example naturally throws an error because that's looking at the actual class and not the movie / stage its attached to.The round-about way I've done it before is to dynamically add the object in the library and pass in the root path when I create a new instance of it (example: submc:sub = new sub(this); ).Is there anyway to get back to the document class with a built-in method like root, etc?
I am a bit puzzled why this does not work when placed in my document class, but works when directly added a key frame in the Flash IDE.

However the new voiceToPlay and frameToPlay don't do anything even though when the soundCompleteHandler is done it traces the correct values.can I pass variable information from the main timeline to the document class, apparently I can but I don't know why the new voice over doesn't play.

My listener is registering before the event is dispatched, based on my output window, however I never get the "Open Doors" trace statement to fire.
I have a FLA (say Main.FLA) document class with a child MovieClip on the stage: into the child MovieClip I load other swf files: each of the files contains its own Document Class (every swf is a somewhat independent application, say quizzes and so on).For some reason I must use the Main document class to store data (scores or so) from the child swfs loaded into the Main swf. HOW do I reference the Main class? This page describes AS3 but neglects to mention what to do with the object and embed tags in the noscript section. Furthermore, I'm not sure the javascript I see generated in my page looks like the example there (the js in my page doesn't check AC_FL_RunContenta against zero)This page is quite long and appears to deal mostly with AS1 and AS2 approaches which I have used before and neglects entirely the newish javascript approach which appears to be used to embed flash these days (i.e., the javascript function AC_FL_RunContent).I was wondering if someone could spell out the proper way to pass in a variable from HTML so that flash can see it in such a way that works even if javascript is disabled, in all browsers, etc., etc.

I've tried to attach the HTML generated by the Flash IDE to this topic but both HTML and zip format were rejected for some reason.
My problem is i had 2 swfs parent.swf and child .swf and i loaded the child.swf file in parent.swf using Loader class there is a textbox and a button in child.swf when we enter text in the textbox(say,notepanel_txt) and click on the button(say, mySubmit) the text present in textbox(notepanel_txt.text) is saved in the database using URLLoader and an variable called success(which is String type) must be available to parent. the code is as follows:

I am importing some flash vars from my html into my swf.

and in my flash file i do this to load caption1 etc...

I need to pass multiple flash vars into my swf -- I see multiple places in the adobe-generated HTML in which to put the flash vars. While I can do this successfuly for one flash var, I can't for more than one (I'm using something like this at the moment, which works, but cannot be extended URL

This has been my problem for a couple of days now.... I need to send a variable from flash that is embedded in an html to a javascript that will eventually should print the variables(that is the use of the js :to print).
So I've been using externalInterface.call("printval",param1,param2,pa ram3) to send my variables... I've put an alert in my javascript so that i could test if the value is there, the frustrating thing is the alert is showing with the variables but the printing part isnt executed. I tried this in firefox and it work, but I need this in ie...
Using Flash CS5 Professional I have created a symbol, dragged it onto the stage, and given it an instance name of GreenLight1. If I want to make this visible from the document class, I can simply do the GreenLight1.visible=true; and poof it's good to go when I test the file. As long as I stay in the document class I am good to go, but now I'm trying to move to another class and hitting ALL kinds of trouble just trying to get Flash to allow me to access this simple object. All I am looking to do is have this GreenLight1 go invisible (visible=false) when a certain condition occurs in this new class and Flash just won't let me access GreenLight1 at all. Things I've tried thus far:
stage is passed to the class and is referenced by _stage and is working just fine when I do _stage.addchild or anything like that. So I have tried "_stage.GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property GreenLight1 not found on flash.display.Stage and there is no default value." My document class extends Sprite, so I figured I'd try the root function. So I tried "Sprite(root).GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "1119: Access of possibly undefined property GreenLight1 through a reference with static type flash.display:Sprite." I tried to create the Resource class as described therein. To which I came across the same problem that I started with in that it doesn't know what GreenLight1 is to begin with so I got "1120: Access of undefined property GreenLight1." Here is my code for Resource.as (am I supposed to pass something to this class from the document class?)

If I have a Document class that extends MovieClip, and I want to use it as the basis for another Document class, is it possible to create a subclass that extends the main document class and use that for a different FLA?
For example,
fla1.fla has a document class of MyMainClass:
public class MyMainClass extends MovieClip
fla2.fla has a document class of MySubClass:
public class MySubClass extends MyMainClass
I've tried, but now I'm getting errors that all of my variables that reference stage instances aren't being found.
while working with a server side script (php or aspx) which returns some data(from the database) can we call it in a sub-class or do we have to make the calls in the document class itself?

I've done tons of reading, and think I have a firm understanding that the general consensus is that if you want to reference something, it needs to be added to the display list, using addChild().
I hate to be defiant, but what if I don't want to?
Or at the very least, what if I want to add a movieclip class to the stage using addChild, and then reference objects inside it?
It is much easier this way than what most people recommend - adding 15 objects via addChild, then setting the x and y for the, etc.
That said, I'm all about using classes and using as3 the way it was meant to be used. So what this is, is a best practices question I guess.
HERE ARE THE STEPS I'M TRYING:
- Create new flash document
- Draw graphic symbol bg, with text field over it, select them, convert to movieclip symbol, and export class name "box", then delete it from stage
- Add document class .as file, which simply adds that class "box" from the library, to the display list using a simple addChild()
- Set a name for that box using box.name = "test" let's say
- Do a simple trace like the following - "getChildByName('test').textFieldName" - it shows up great
- So then, I'll now try to set the text by doing this - getChildByName('test').textFieldName.text = "yo";
That last line above, is what doesn't work. I know I'm referencing wrong, but how would a pro as3 developer, reference something on the stage within a movieclip class, from the document class?
