ActionScript 3 :: Processing XML - Operator Is Returning Empty XMLList?
Feb 22, 2011
I have an xml document like the below one that I am trying to parse using AS3. I want to get all of the classes who have students playing Basketball. I thought that I could do something like:
var sport:String = "BasketBall";
var bbClasses:XMLList = xml.classes.class.(students.student.commitments.comm==sport);
Unfortionatly this is returning me an empty XMLList.

I have an xml document like the below one that I am trying to parse using AS3.I want to get all of the classes who have students playing Basketball.[code]
I have a problem with XML filtering. [code]If there is only one result, trace is empty. If there are 2 results or more, they will be traced fine. Is it because one result is not an XML 'list'? If so, how do I get the results if there is only one match?
If I have an XMLList object in Flex, what is the proper way to check to see if the list is empty? Should I just compare the result of myList.length() > 0, myList.toString() != "" or try another method altogether?
I have an XMLList 'Keywords', which consists of about 30 elements. I want to count the number of unique keywords in the List, and how often they occur. Then display the top 3 most occuring keywords.
I have a list of 99 item (something like a phone book) and I will like to sort them in different method. Part of the 99 item might be empty, so the requirement is to move the empty field behind the sorted data in every sorting behavior, here the code we have so far:
Looking for an operator in AS 3.0 that will work as a like or contains operator. Trying to create a search field that looks for a value (keyword) when a person types in a question in the text box.When it finds this key word it will then play a video. So if they type in "What are your training options?" It will look for train and play an flv file for our training courses.
The XML file is formatted like this:[code]The traces are all for debug purposes.If I place this code into the actions panel of the first frame of the flash document (without the thisObj:TriviaGame = this part), everything works fine and I get correct traces.If I place this code within TriviaGame.as, all of the traces print 'undefined', but it claims to have opened the file correctly.I've found a lot of XML tutorials on this site, but none of them seem to deal with processing XML from within a class file--they all put the code directly on the frame.
I have a large amount of MovieClips and I want to change the ones of class "Circle". So far no problems. However, I want to change the ones with name "S2" to another frame than the rest. I have tried several methods, but couldn't get it to work.
Code:
for(var i:int=0;i<numChildren;i++) { if (getChildAt(i) is Circle) { if (MovieClip(getChildAt(i))._name == "S2") {
I've got a function that loads an XML file, and processes it into an array. Outside the function, if I trace for any of the contents of the array, it comes back undefined. What I've noticed is that the trace command is triggered before the array has been populated, even though the function to populate the array is called prior to the trace command.Here's the code:
Code: var playListArray = new Array(); var myXML:XML = new XML(); myXML.ignoreWhite=true;[code]......
I am going though a tutorial were I need to us an or operator its showing it as two vertical lines? How do I input that? I can't find anything like it on my keyboard and in the book it just mentions that the two lines represent the or operator and not how to even put in in the code?
basically in english, i'm trying to say that:if color is equal to purple or orange or brown then do this, else if color is equal to red or pink or green, then do this.the error the above code is having is that, no matter what _root.currentSection is, it always goes to the first if statment, so leads me to believe i'm using the || operator wrong.
I'm trying to get flash to randomize an arithmetic operator from a set of operators, i.e.operators = + - * / etc and I want flash to randomly pick one from the list!How do I do this? I looked at the random tut on kirupa but I don't know how to make it work with anything other than numbers!
I'm trying to check to see if all the other movieclips on the stage are on frame 1.If they are, then on release of this button go to and stop on frame 2 of a specified movieclip. If any of the conditions in the if statement are false (any of the movieclips are not on frame 1) then I want to send all of the movieclips on the stage to frame 1 and then send the specified movieclip to frame 2.The code that I am using is below.I have placed this code on the instance of the button and all the movieclips and button are on the main stage.[code]
Im doing a tutorial in a book that moves a car from one end of the screen to the next by buttons.When you release a button it moves the car 10 pixels more down the X axis.The code confuses me and I want to understand it Please Help!
Here is the code:
// stop the cars traveling stop(); // callback for onPress event on 'back' button back_btn.onPress = function() { // move my car -10 pix

Why does the - sign and + sign appear before the = instead of after?Is this a logic operator(-= or +?Why doesn't putting the - sign or + sign after the = work?
Is there any simple way to use a plus or minus operator in AS2? To give this context, lets say I want to randomize a speed, higher or lower, on event (passing a certain x or y value) (like a ball bouncing around in a bounding box,but create some random rebound angles).I'm essentially asking if there's anoperator for the symbol '' in AS2...
From a position on an Array of sector Sprites on an 11 x 11 grid, I am trying to "sense" what Child occurs at nearby sector Sprites. I felt certain I could use something like this
if (sectorArray [currentSector - 11].getChildAt is MovieClip) { //do stuff }
but it doesn't seem to work. I changed my visibility settings to true, thinking the false visibility might be a problem, but no result.

I am looking to delay the processing of coding for 1 second. A user will hit button and some of the coding is processed, a delay will then take place for 1 second or so and then process the rest of the coding. Does anyone know ho to achieve this?
I have created 3 forms.The forms appear to operate correctly.You receive an error message when the form hasn't been filled out correctly and when you fill the form correctly it appears to process the forms information.However the information is never received in my email account.I am assuming there is an issue with the php file.URL..
I've been using Processing for around two years now, and I really like it. However, I feel like Flash is a bit more useful for coding games, as it's more universal and flexible. I'm starting to feel like I have no idea what I'm doing, and I really don't get any of the concepts like movie clips and the stage and so forth. In Processing, to make, say, a ball, I might make this:
Ball[] ballArray = new Ball[ 0 ]; //Array to store each ball in void setup() { size( 400, 400 );
[code].....
And that would let me create as many instances as I like, anywhere I like.I haven't the faintest clue how to make a comparable applet in Flash.I've tried making a 'ball' class in a separate .as file, but it gives me an error about too many arguments. I also don't know how to draw a shape directly to the screen.
I have researched this topic and I believe the answer is AS3 Scope Issue though I can not resolve the issue.My xml loads fine and I can traverse it fine. I need to compare it against an array in another file so I believe the best thing to do is put then node I want into a class variable/field.
I have an MC that occurs many times on the stage, and each one has a motion, and random scaling script in it. Would I save computing power by not having a script in each MC but rather assign them all to a prototype?
How can I prevent concatenating when using the addition operator? totalCost_txt.text = (firstCost_txt.text + secondCost_txt.text)I can replace the "+" with any other operator and it works. (huh?)
