View 2 RepliesDoes MXML get compiled down to as3 and then converted to flash bytecode? Also, is there a significant performance penalty to compiling mxml vs compiling as3?
View 3 RepliesI am working on a custom Flex 4 component which is an aggregation of two existing flex components. I would like to be able to specify my own custom properties for the component as well as access the existing public subcomponent properties via MXML. For instance I might want to adjust the font color or style for the label and text input. toy component which aggregates both a label and a text input:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Group xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
[code]....
I am trying to override a Button class, i have a few properties which i wish directly initialise with the mxml description of the component, like :[code]which function is triggered ( in order to override it ) when all properties with mxml description is fully initialised with their values ?
View 1 RepliesWhat I'd like to do: create an MXML component with some children, then extend it via MXML to create a new component with more children, without losing the original set.In other words
create a component bc.mxml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:BorderContainer xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
[code].....
i have defined some functions in a component mxml file let us say addbutton() now i want to call this function in main mxml file.

A Flex components values are initlized by init methord. In an application flow, How to refresh a mxml component data value ; as init is callled at the start up it self only.
eg. of mxml componet may be as simple as button label or text as complex as repeater whose data provider is a web service ( means a fresh quesy should be made to pull the data and refresh the dataprovider of repeater )
suppose i have 3 buttons(for example say, productin, marketing, sales ) on my main.mxml..once i click on one button it should take me to abc.mxml page with production data, once again if i click on second button it should take me to the same abc.mxml but with marketing data. same as for 3rd button also, how can i achieve this ?
View 2 RepliesI've been trying to create a custom mxml component that extends another custom mxml component (i.e.MyMXMLComponent -> BaseMXMLComponent -> Group). I've been reading that trying to add visual children to MyMXMLComponent caused error with Flex 3 but that's no longer the case with Flex 4.
What I want to know is whether this is a supported/fixed/documented feature of Flex 4? or just some undefined behavior in Flex 4 that may get changed with future updates?
if this is supported and documented feature, does anyone have link pointing to adobe document stating it as such?
In 90% of the example projects I see for ActionScript / Flex I notice the following two coding conventions: 1) private member variables with getters/setters start with an underscore as in "_credentials" and 2) interfaces start with the letter "I" as in "ISessionInfo" Coming from the Java world, I find both of these conventions unnecessary and annoying. I am about to start a new Flex project and was planning on NOT following these conventions unless they are truly are widespread, standard conventions in the Actionscript/Flex world.
View 1 RepliesFor example if I was given the string "01/01/1980". How could I then get the current date, then figure out how old someone is, and then just return how many years old they are?
I saw a topic on this in C++ but i'm not to familiar with it, anyone know how this would be done in AS3?
edit: I think what i'm having the hardest time with is how I would break down the original brithday string i'm starting with into month, day, year vars
I'm developing a flash app by using free Flex SDK and text editor and compiling in command line.
I want to use VGroup or HGroup in my actionscript to manage positions of DisplayObjects.[code]...
I have a UI component that, for various reasons, I have to construct programatically. The component is a table of radio buttons grouped by column.Right now, I'm constructing the column groups like so:
private function createGroupsForItemList(items: XMLList): void {
for each (var item: XML in items) {
var rbGroup: RadioButtonGroup = new RadioButtonGroup();
groups[item.@level.toString()] = rbGroup;
}
}
I'm trying to associate the RadioButton instances with the column groups like so:
private function createValueControl(item: XML): UIComponent {
var control: RadioButton = new RadioButton();
control.label = "";
[code]...
I can see in the debugger that the control has an association to the group:
control.group == groups[item.@level.toString()]
However, I can see equally that the group does not know anything about the control:
group.radioButtons.length == 0
I imagine that this is because the setter for group in RadioButton is a dumb setter; all it does is copy to the variable, which doesn't do the magic that groupName does. However, I can't seem to find the value I should use to set the RadioButton.groupName property correctly.So, in short, I'm stumped on how to get these bits to talk to each other. How do I do this?
-- EDIT -- It turns out that I can have the groups created and associated simply by setting the groupName property, but I can't get at the group to set up a selection listener; the group is NULL immediately after the setting process, which means that the second line below throws the Flex equivalent of an NPE:
control.groupName = groupNameForLevel(item);
control.group.addEventListener(Event.SELECT, updateSelection);
What it says on the tin: I have an XMLList, and I want to find where in it a particular XML item falls. First index is good enough for my purposes. Note that I have no problem writing a function to do this by hand... but I was hoping that the API has something buried somewhere that'll do it for me. I didn't see it, though.
View 2 RepliesAs you all know, Vector support type checking by added Type parameter.
var v:Vector.<String> = new Vector.<String>();
I wonder if I am able to create a custom class that have Type parameter, something like this
var myClassInstance: MyClassDefinition.<String>;
This is a project I'm working on for a simple demo tutorial application in Flex. I am using mxml pages. You can see to the left that I will have my main application and then other mxml files (In the Examples Package) as the examples that will be loaded into the main application mxml. How can I dynamically pull the value from the object in the list to load the child mxml file into the container that I have further down in the application?
View 1 RepliesTo crop the image into a selected size by drawing rectangle over it. It should be done in ActionScript 3.0 and Flex 3.0
View 1 RepliesI've been trying to embed some svg files into an AS3 project using the Embed meta tag. For example:
[Code]...
However when displaying these files as Sprites only some of the gradients are surviving the embeding process. From what I've found simple (2 step) horizontal gradients seem to stand the best chance of being preserved, but sometimes other kinds of gradients are as well. In one case simply rotating an object 90 degrees causes the gradient to vanish when displayed in flash. Does anyone know a rough set of rules to use when creating svg gradient fills so they are preserved when rendered in flash? BTW: I used Inkscape to create the images in question.
Update: Bizarrely the solution to this seems to be setting the opacity of any object in the svg file whose gradient isn't displayed properly to a value below 1. Don't ask me why this works but it does. It does however have the unwanted side effect of the objects edges not being rendered as smoothly.
I have a method in CustomPanel.mxml and I need to use id which is available in Main.mxml. Below is my sample code
Main.mxml

I would like to include an MXML file in my MXML file in the same way you can include an external file in AS3 using the include directive. Using the include directive brings the code from the external file into the original file at compile time placing it in the same scope. For example,
Application.mxml:
<Application>
<source="external.mxml"/>
[code].......
I am looking to subclass RemoteObject. Instead of:
<mx:RemoteObject ... >
<mx:method ... />
<mx:method ... />
[code].....
I'm trying to do this using only mxml, no <script> tags, although I don't necessarily need a solution that's only mxml. It was more of an educational exercise to see if I could do it all in mxml. I have a custom component that has a slider and textinput and their value/text properties are bound together. I'm surfacing a few properties of the slider in my component so that it can sort of be treated like a slider.

After reading a few articles on the adobe site, I'm still non the wiser as to when to use which.
