Java :: Which Is A Better Cross Platform Language

Sep 17, 2011

If you wanted to distribute a program to as many OS as much as possible what's the best language to use? I'm considering user's convenience here. For example, they don't need to download java run time, flash or .net framework if they don't have it. Also once they download it, they don't need to compile it themselves.

I'm also considering developer's convenience, in that on one compile, the program compiles different version of OS for you and you don't need to install different os to compile it. Here are the features of the program I'm thinking: Stores text and image to database Uses keywords Can browse information in the webserver via xml Can share(upload and download) information from the web server via xml Can compile and edit related articles via keywords It's something like a blog with advance features and can exist on and offline

Flash :: Cross-platform Application Development Tools?

Sep 27, 2011

I have an application I built in Flash that runs with no problems on Windows and OSX. I'd like to extend it to mobile platforms and I want to be able to call programs written in the native language of each platform.

I understand that Flex can be used on mobile platforms and that it can call native code, but I'm a little confused by what I've read about Flex. Can I use the Adobe Flash development environment to build Flex applications? Will our users need the Adobe Air runtime to run the programs? And what the heck does Air add to the capabilities? We need strong audio and video capabilities, a built-in database is not a requirement.

Flash :: Cross Platform - Sharing Pro / Builder Projects Between OSX And Windows

Jan 19, 2011

My buddy and I are gearing up for a game jam and we're hoping to use Flash to build our project. One possible problem is that he's got a PC laptop, and I've got a MacBook.

What's the status of cross-platform development in Flash? I'd love to be able to drop something into an SVN repo and pull everything down without regard to the OS, but I'm not convinced that will be very smooth. It seems like I can move around ActionScript source and .fla files without too much issue, but Flash Builder projects seem pretty gnarly, e.g. they appear to have references to them outside of the project folder.

Is there an easy way to migrate project data in such a away that we can develop and debug regardless of OS? Maybe version-controlling all the portable content (.as, .fla, raw assets) and the importing into our respective project environments?

Flash 10 :: Cross-platform Random Font-glyphs Missing Inspite Of Embedding

Jul 29, 2010

A project I am am working on has an extremely strange font problem. We have completely unpredictable glyphs missing on Mac compilations inspite of correct font embedding and correct font installations on the machines. Here is some of the context:

1. The Font is a custom truetype font which belongs to the client.

2. We are working on CS5 on the Mac, and CS4 on PC.

3. We are using classic dynamic texts, assigning striungs to the text attribut (not to htmlText). However the probel also occurrs with other classic text modes (single-line, multi line, kerening on or off, etc)

4. It is not predictable whether the glyphs of the font will show or not on the Mac CS5 compilations or not.

5. The issue does not seem to occurr with standard fonts like Courier or Helvetica.

6. Compiling on CS4 on PC works correctly.

Java :: Best Platform For Writing A Webchat?

Mar 28, 2012

I want to start to make a chat client that runs in web browsers, upon a colleges requests. Its my first time doing something like this, so i made some research about this mostly about HTML5. I did research on the platform itself, how fast and how used it is, but my most important factor was: mobile support.I plan to develop this chat for a long while for experience because, as a coder/programmer I am still inexperienced. So i was thinking in the future as well. i have a forum community with pretty limited chat access. I want to change that as well, and as an extra include mobile support.

i researched Flash, java and HTML5, the two most obvious choice in web applications, and pretty much the new comer HTML5.Flash is more widely used as web app(at least what i saw and found.), and its more designer oriented than programmer, but many chats are written in this, and are used. but there is no mobile support for it, to my knowledge. thats hinders my future plans.Java, is a robust programming language, and saw a few webchats in this, but my main issue with this is performance: its much slower than flash. But at least there is mobile support, at least the android mobiles.

as for HTML5....its pretty much still a child, not all web browsers support it fully but the major ones support web socket already, except IE9. and IE9 is the most used web browser, sadly. And i cant find any support for it on mobiles yet.And i don't know any other platforms out there in the Internet that could do the same as the above three, but i'm open.So my question is: Which is the best platform for writing a webchat, that lest me do mobile support at a latter stage?

Java :: Programming Language For Web?

May 21, 2010

I haven't programmed in a while, and have kind of lost interest, but I want to get back, and I've enjoyed C# the most, a lot more than objective-c and visual basic. So I want to make some games that me and my friends will be able to play next school year. So basically something you can play on the web.

What programming languages deploy to the web?If c# is possible, and a mac with safari/firefox would be able to use it (I can't install plugins, and I don't want to get in trouble for making myself admin again)Flash, Java, etc. If java does, I'd like that most since it's most like c#. Then what libraries/engines would I use? I want to do 2d. And then what IDE would I use?

Java :: Is There A Universal Language

Dec 8, 2011

We're designing an app that will run on Windows, OSX, iOS, and Androids. It would be really nice to at least have most of the code in a single language rather than having to use Objective C for the Apple versions, C# or C++ for Windows, and Java for Android. We were looking at Flex (with all of its problems) as a way to avoid having to use a different language for each version, but Adobe has thrown in the towel and in the long run that's not going to do the job. Java used to promise to be universal, but it looks like Apple no longer supports it as a part of the distributed OS, and as far as I can tell Microsoft never supported it. We don't want our users to have to download and install something just so they can use our app.Is there a solution? Or are we stuck with building the app in multiple languages?

Java :: Platform For Web-based Multi-player Game?

Sep 28, 2010

I'm developing a web-based fantasy football game. Most of the game is a straight-forward web application built on top of Linux/Apache/Php/MySQL.

I'm trying to figure out how to implement the draft application. The draft date and time will be scheduled in advance by each league's owner. Up to 32 users may be logged on for a given league's draft, and there is no limit to how many drafts may be happening concurrently. The users will take turns selecting players, and each user's turn will have a time limit. I'd like for all the users to be able to see whose turn it is, how much time that user has left to select a player, who they select, and which players are still available. If there are users in the league who are not logged in during the draft I'd like to be able to detect that and automatically assign players to them rather than waiting for the time to run out on their turn. Ideally I'd also like to have a chat window so the users could chat with one another during the draft.

My background is in desktop application development, so if necessary I could write server code in C#/.NET or Java. As far as I can see these are the options: PHP/AJAX - It seems like it would be possible to have all the state for the draft in the database and have the operations for the draft run in PHP triggered by requests from the clients? I guess in this case the draft doesn't start until at least one user logs in, and it seems like it would be a lot of polling requests to the server if I want everyone notified quickly when a user makes a selection.

Professional :: Creating Flash Videos From Java Language?

Aug 24, 2010

How can I create a flash video using Java.. (Java and JavaScript have nothing to do with each other, in my world Java Script is a useless technology). Does Flash Professional have a Java API and if so how do I get the JavaDocs and an example to see the complexity of that API. Does the Adobe Media Encoder have a Java API that I can use.. if so, JavaDocs and an example?

Picture having two million directories, each directory has 30 photos and a sound clip. From this I want to produce two million flash movies each movie has 30 photos and the sound clip. Each movie has panning of the photos (Ken Burns, Civil War on PBS). What does Adobe have that I can call from within my Java code or Perl perhaps. I need to do this every two weeks, at least. Using a standard user interface is not going to work, even if I hired half of the planet.. I have been on the phone with Adobe for two days and have gotten nowhere.. surly Adobe has something which allows me to automate the creation of Flash movies. right?

2) What kind of Flash support does Android have? Can it load directly swf applications? Does it have to load swf's through browser?

3) Can i find any kind of performance indexes for google TV hardware?

Java :: Load External Page HTML Via Javascript Or Flash Or Java?

Nov 13, 2011

I need to load somehow the html code of a webpage A into a javascript string of another webpage B, on a different host. I know this is impossible to do with javascript alone because of the same origin policy, and I know I could do it loading the page via php on my server and then send results back to the user's client but I wouldn't be able to handle so many requests, so I need it to be done directly by the user's browser. I can use nearly whatever browser scripting language/applet framework common enough to be installed on the majority of my users' computers, like flash and java.On example, what if I use flash or java to load the external html code and then call a javascript callback function providing the source? Could this work?

Java :: Any Opensource Alternative To Squish To Test Flash / Silverlight / Java Applet Gui Objects?

If one doesn't have the source code, the only to test is to send keystroke and mouse move so I found this product but it's not free and opensource price is not even known :([URL] Squish supports automating interactions and testing non-HTML/DOM elements, that is, native objects, which are embedded in a web page. This is done at a fairly abstract level, which means that mouse and text input can be recorded and replayed.

In addition it is possible to inspect embedded native objects with the Spy tool and to insert verifications for these native objects. All of a native object's public properties can be accessed in test scripts.

AS3.0 :: Java - Flex - ArrayList Of Custom Java Objects Over BlazeDS

Dec 7, 2010

Right away i just try to explain my problem: Using BlazeDS i got the following Javaclasses:

[Code]...

Then i got a Flex service class calling BlazeDS and executing the getCategories java method. Since Flash dosn't seem to understand typed arrays, the result from that method which i get back in flex is a simple array of untyped objects (the mapping dosn't seem to work here, even tought the class category exists in flex and has the same properties).
thats the first thing. but however, i'm converting the untyped objects manually into objects of the category.as class. the second thing is that categories have child-categories within the java object, which are also ArrayLists of the type category.java. the problem about that: my result event object only contains the first level of categories, looking into them the children are allways null. i dunno why they are empty, since they ARE part of the java object category.

and the third thing (the strangest by fast), you maybe noticed i named the properties of the category.java class strange, like idCat and nameTest instead of simply id and name. why that? because the property names of my flex result objects dont seem to change when i change the java objects properties names (result object properties are named "id" and "name" but the java class object properties are named "idCAT" and "nameTEST"). that it REALLY strange, since if i set the properties, like you see at nameTEST = "TESTNAME" it IS recogniced by flex, only the proertyNAMES dont seem to be recognized at all.
