Flash :: Cross-platform Application Development Tools?

I have an application I built in Flash that runs with no problems on Windows and OSX. I'd like to extend it to mobile platforms and I want to be able to call programs written in the native language of each platform.
I understand that Flex can be used on mobile platforms and that it can call native code, but I'm a little confused by what I've read about Flex. Can I use the Adobe Flash development environment to build Flex applications? Will our users need the Adobe Air runtime to run the programs? And what the heck does Air add to the capabilities? We need strong audio and video capabilities, a built-in database is not a requirement.

I am working on Adobe air for making a cross-platform project which is running on iOS, Android, Mac and windows. I have a plan to make it runnable on web as well. I am looking for the best approach for making artwork for this project as it is crossed platform. Right now I am thinking to separate backend logic from front-end i.e put layout for every platform separately.

I'm working on a project in which I am writing code on a PC and someone else is creating graphics and animation on a Mac. We need to have embedded fonts to work w/xml and CSS. Is there a way to embed fonts so they work inside the fla on both platforms?

Is there any cross-platform-safe method for dealing with keyboard shortcuts in Flash? For example, on my Mac, pressing ctrl+f results in a KeyboardEvent where the keyCode is 6, but on Windows, the keyCode is 70.

My buddy and I are gearing up for a game jam and we're hoping to use Flash to build our project. One possible problem is that he's got a PC laptop, and I've got a MacBook.
What's the status of cross-platform development in Flash? I'd love to be able to drop something into an SVN repo and pull everything down without regard to the OS, but I'm not convinced that will be very smooth. It seems like I can move around ActionScript source and .fla files without too much issue, but Flash Builder projects seem pretty gnarly, e.g. they appear to have references to them outside of the project folder.
Is there an easy way to migrate project data in such a away that we can develop and debug regardless of OS? Maybe version-controlling all the portable content (.as, .fla, raw assets) and the importing into our respective project environments?

A project I am am working on has an extremely strange font problem. We have completely unpredictable glyphs missing on Mac compilations inspite of correct font embedding and correct font installations on the machines. Here is some of the context:
1. The Font is a custom truetype font which belongs to the client.
2. We are working on CS5 on the Mac, and CS4 on PC.
3. We are using classic dynamic texts, assigning striungs to the text attribut (not to htmlText). However the probel also occurrs with other classic text modes (single-line, multi line, kerening on or off, etc)
4. It is not predictable whether the glyphs of the font will show or not on the Mac CS5 compilations or not.
5. The issue does not seem to occurr with standard fonts like Courier or Helvetica.
6. Compiling on CS4 on PC works correctly.

If you wanted to distribute a program to as many OS as much as possible what's the best language to use? I'm considering user's convenience here. For example, they don't need to download java run time, flash or .net framework if they don't have it. Also once they download it, they don't need to compile it themselves.
I'm also considering developer's convenience, in that on one compile, the program compiles different version of OS for you and you don't need to install different os to compile it. Here are the features of the program I'm thinking: Stores text and image to database Uses keywords Can browse information in the webserver via xml Can share(upload and download) information from the web server via xml Can compile and edit related articles via keywords It's something like a blog with advance features and can exist on and offline

I've tried a number of options, sharedobject, xml, and junking up input/dynamic text in pretty awful ways; have also tried to "save on close" in AIR code. Any right path so when I port and test to iOS it will work...I'm not good in a flex/flash builder environment, as I am in flash 95% of the time.

I am going to develop a very simple game for android and for iphone/ipad I have the option to develop it in cocos2d or in adobe flash air (i am not a developer, but i have 2 developers who are offering me the service)I have a developer that states that cocos2d is better and other one that states that adobe flash air.I want it in cross platform.the cost offered by both developers is the same..i have heard that adobe air has the flaw that it is very slow, is this real? if you had the 2 options which will you use to develop your game and why?

I am developing an application which is similar to[URL].. I need your advice on how to achive the ping and download and upload speeds. I have experience in as3, but very new to this kind of applications. can you please give your thoughts on how this application is developed.
I assume the application needs to download a file, based on the data loaded in that specific time we calculate the download speed. i am not sure about the upload and the ping.

I am currently in the process of developing an application with Flash/AS3. I have worked a lot with AS3 (FlashDevelop) before so I am rather familiar with it, however, since I won't be the one designing (nor the only one for that matter), and because it isn't a one day job, it is important to be able to get some structure in the project. So that we can have a "core" of AS3 that loads SWF-files and then does the interaction with the loaded SWFs, like providing information for fields and submitting the data, etc.
However, I've searched and I can't find any good up-to-date information on how to actually take care of the communication with the loaded SWFs. I found a lot of tutorials on it, but every single one ended up simply not working or being "depreciated" by the compiler because they were built for earlier versions of AS2/AS3 or Flash. (I found this promishing guide: [URL].. but that too ended up being depreciated) The only working piece of information I've found is LocalConnection, but it is really not well-suited for this, and from what I can tell a very complicated way to go about things.
So my question is how does one go about implementing the communication between AS3 and the loaded SWFs?
Being able to dispatch events or call functions both ways is basically what I think is necessary.Or perhaps there are better ways to go about application development with Flash?

I am starting a project in which I hope to create a web application with similar elements to Google Maps, such as zooming, panning, displaying tiles, etc. The idea would be for it to have a very fluid and dynamic feel.Some possibilities that I have encountered are:
-Flash
-Silverlight
-HTML5
-Google Web Toolkit
-Javascript/jQuery
Being proficient in C# and .net, I feel that Silverlight may be the easiest for me to work with. I am worried however with regards to the penetration of Silverlight (this is a consumer-facing application). I am not asking to implement Google Maps into my web application. Rather I am attempting to create a new similar website (not mapping, but similar concepts).

I have a web application that functions as a dashboard, allowing a user to see summaries of historical data to view trends, etc. As an extension to this, I want to allow the user to drill-down into the historical data if they so wish.What this will amount to is a table of time-value pairs, showing the time a particular data point was recorded as well as its associated value. The issue is that there could be a very large amount of data on record (millions of points is entirely possible), which means it wouldn't work to load all the data up front and display it to the user.
So far, my best idea is to implement the table of time-value pairs with "infinite scrolling" - i.e. the first x points are loaded and then as the user scrolls down the next x points are fetched and so on until the user reaches the end of the data (with a fixed-size cache of points, so that I don't run out of memory). The issue with this approach, though, is that there's no way to get to the end of the data without first fetching every point in between.
Another option would be to have a navigation interface with forward and back buttons, as well as some sort of date chooser so the user can quickly navigate to any data point they wish. This solves the problem of the first idea, but this navigation interface is far more clunky and less intuitive.My question is: is there some happy medium? A UI where it's clean and easy to navigate through the data but at the same time provide some method of jumping to a specific point in time?
Edits based on comments below:The development environment is flex and the database is SQL Anywhere, though the back-end logistics are less important to me than a clean, functional UI.

I've been given a Flash tutorial to post to the corporate website that is an .exe file with an embedded Flash player. Users will be on IE, so I guess they would get the run/save prompt. I don't like this and I know it generally isn't done, but I need to know if it is OK to just do it. When I try to explain the security issues with executable files, eyes glaze. Is it possible that the users' system admins would be able to block the run prompt and make the user save the file? Could they block that too? The user community is hopeless, so having the embedded Flash player could be a good thing.

I've tried this:

But that only gets me the photos belonging to that user.

Does anybody use bare .SWF files as webpages? I know it's possible; it seems to work fine for me. Why would I embed a SWF inside an HTML page if it's just going to be full screen (I mean the size of the browser's normal viewable page area, not COMPLETELY fullscreen)?
Is there a lack of browser support? Or is this functionality determined by the browser's Flash plugin?

If I load a web page full of other files, e.g. images, my browser doesn't load them all at once.I seem to remember reading that IE will only have at most 3 requests open at a time for a page. The rest will be queued.If I have a flash movie on the page which is continually making image requests, how does this affect the maximum number of downloading files in the browser?
Is this browser limit accurate, and is it generally the same across browsers? Does flash share the requests of the browser? If not, does flash have a limit and what is that limit?
For some background, I do have a flash movie that is continually loading files so there is a queue of Loaders waiting to make requests.My idea was that if there was a different request that I needed to be executed straight away I could make it jump the queue by making a javascript call and allowing the browser to make the request instead.

I was asked to create a screensaver capable to run on both win and mac. I am ActionScript developer, so I prefer to solve this using Flash/SWF. I know this is possible using several tools:Projectors such as Zinc or SWF Studio (os independent, $$$)Converters creating screensavers that use the Flash Player (one converter per os necessary, requires Flash Player on user machine, freeware)Adobe Air created screensavers (os independent, requires Air on user machine, no costs)I do not have control over the machines the screensaver will run. So everything needs to be simple and safe.
