I have to load a large xml in flash and I'm trying to send it compressed. To do that I tried to zlib compress the string and send it base64 encoded. In flash I turn the string into a byte array and use its uncompress() method. So far I tried:ZLIB.NET

im using an open source program called Festival that generates text to speech, and in ubuntu i call its method text2wave that converts text into a wave file. I am looking into converting short paragraphs to wave files, but the problem is that each wave file ends up being approximately 1.2MB in size. The wave file is recorded at 16khz, and while recording at 8khz halves the size of the wave file (sacrificing sound quality), the wave file is just simply too large. These paragraphs have to be served many times to the clients and our server can not support that much bandwidth. Is it possible to compress the file on the server, and decompress it in my flash script (on the client side) and play the wave?

I can decompress them using Python API on the server but I prefer to keep the files compressed there. I want to be able to download and decompress the files later, however WinZip and WinRar fail to decompress them. When I google for zlib utility, I only find zlib dll library. I need a simple application for Windows (and/or Linux)

I recompiled a Flash 8 project in Flash CS3 recently and noticed that some of the sound effects sounded like a painful chippy mess. It sounded like the mp3 bitrate was at the lowest Flash outputs (16kbps). I compiled again, and all the problems went away. Then I compiled again and different sounds went chippy!

This week I built a project from the ground up in Flash CS3 with AS 3.0 . The chippy compression is still there and happens most of the time. Both my global and local compression settings for sound clips are mp3, 160kbps, Stereo.
I`ll be dealing with this few hours now, so I manage to optimize compiled swf file for only 5kb, and I need to achieve 15.
So, what are the options to prevent unnecessary file size?
Using an unobtrusive technology (HTML5, Flash, Java Applet) which runs in the browser, is it possible to handle compressing of files before being uploaded to the server? I'm building software which will be consumed by a lot of slow connections and by non-computer-savvy users and circumventing an application install would be very beneficial for them.

View 1 RepliesI have a FileReference that is being uploaded. But before upload, I call the compress() method on the ByteArray of the FileReference i.e. fileReference.data.compress().
But I observe that the uploaded file is the raw file and not the compressed file.
Is this a Flex bug or expected behavior? The data field in the FileReference is read-only. Does that come into play?
This is important since if it's growing too fast there won't be enough space.

I am sending a string to asp from flash that looks like this;

The problem is when asp (probably php too) reads this string, it reads it like this
[CODE]....
Now this sucks, is there a way to encrypt my flash string so asp will read the string corectly? I know asp is url encoding the flash string, but this bit of info does not seem to help.

In flash I want to parse the string that I get from the database and look for URL strings that start with http "http://www.someurl.com" and parse out that substring.
For example the string could be "Please vist my site at http://www.site.com". I would want to parse out the http://www.site.com
If I find this url string I want to pre-pend the a href tag <a> and append the closing </a> tag to the string so that this link will be clickable from the textfield.
Does flash have an object that deals with Regular Expressions? I've looked at the String object in flash but not sure how to achieve this task

In Actionscript and Adobe Flex, I'm using a pattern and regexp (with the global flag) with the string.match method and it works how I'd like except when the match returns multiple occurrences of the same word in the text. In that case, all the matches for that word point only to the index for the first occurrence of that word. For example, if the text is "cat dog cat cat cow" and the pattern is a search for cat*, the match method returns an array of three occurrences of "cat", however, they all point to only the index of the first occurrence of cat when i use indexOf on a loop through the array. I'm assuming this is just how the string.match method is. I want to find the specific indices of every occurrence of a match, even if it is of a word that was already previously matched.

But I keep getting an "Error #2030: End of file was encountered." This is (probably) because the class I'm serializing is too big for the "String" object type in AS3. Is there a limitless object for storing an array of characters (or better yet binary), or am I going to have to make my own class? (like one with an array of strings)
