How do I make the selected label and data in my combobox appear in a dynamic text box in macromedia flash 8?

I'm missing something obvious, but after looking over the same line of code and settings over and over and not being able to find a solution, I thought it better to just ask on the off chance that it'd be an easily resolvable problem. I've tried googling it, but end up with basic tutorials on how to use dynamic text in flash, which just go over what I'm doing already.
The problem is I have a text field in a movieclip. The text field is set to dynamic text, embedding is set on the characters I need, it's instance name is set to "val", it contains the text string "100%". The text field is contained within the movieclip called "uihp". The linkage on this movie clip is turned on, and has the name "uihp". I can attach the movieclip fine, and it is visible. The problem occurs when I attempt to change the text string. I use the following line to attempt to do that:
uihp.val.text = Math.floor(hp)+"%"; I have tried changing it to the string to "one" instead, but the same problem occurs: The text field doesn't display any text, and the previously present text "100%" vanishes, leaving nothing in the text field's place.
Setting the text field's var value to "test" and using uihp.test = "test" gives the same result as using the above method. I know I'm probably missing something obvious, but it feels stupid to waste so much time over this one aspect of an almost finished project if it could be just a simple thing I'm missing.
I had a comboBox and loading the datadynamically from the server. i need to display the first value in comboBox as a selected value and based on the value data should be populated on the grid.

All I want to do is make sure that when I update the item that the comboBox is pointing to internally, that it's selectedIndex also update so that the label within the ComboBox reflects the new value.

I've got some sentences I need to put in a ComboBox as selections. They are much too long for the width of the box on the page. Is there a way to wrap the text in the ComboBox? I'm wondering if I need to put the text into a jpg or something and use that as the label.

It's simple menu that contains one MC at start that works as button, u can edit size of the menu from external .txt file by changing the value of menu length. All that works fine , my problem is that every new duplicated mc contains dynamic text area as a label. Labels are also loaded from that .txt file , but that works only for the 1st mc because the newly created text areas in mc's dont have Instance Name set. How can i assign them from as?

I don't have any code to supply because at this point the only thing I'm trying to display in the text field is "<b>This</b> is a <a href="http://www.google.com">test</a>." i am having a problem with the combobox component.i have a mysql database with a student and a class table.i want to make a registration form for the student. i have the combobox here where he picks his class (populated from the class table). The class_id is a foreign key to the student table and it's invisible in the combobox. i want when the students registers from his selection on the combobox to write in the database the corresponding class_id.

I would like to display their names, organizations, etc... I assume a label would be best, binding the appropriate XML node to the text attribute of a label? I've done the following:
created the button background and added the TextField on it called txt and packed it all to Button called MyButton. I added an instance of MyButton called btn to a stage and wrote in the main class: trace(btn.txt.text); - everything was fine. But when I added states of the button (Up, Down, Over and Hit) the txt field of buttons became null.
Flash documentation says this is possible, but cb.selectedItem={label:'labeltext',data:'data'}; is a no go for me. Maybe I'm missing something obvious? Setting selectedIndex works great, but this should work too.

This happens when I embed fonts and modifies or removes items from an existing combobox.
