ActionScript 2.0 :: Convert A String To A Variable?

May 15, 2010

Can I convert a string to a variable?For example:

Code:
var left = -100;
toVar( "left" );
function toVar(side)
{
trace(side); // I want to trace out -100 instead of "left"
}

Naturally I can remove the quotes in my function call so it would represent the variable instead of a string, but can I convert the string to the variable within the function?

String :: Flex - Download A String Variable As A File To The Local Machine?

Sep 21, 2011

I have a String variable in my flex (flash builder 4) application containing CSV data. I need to allow the user to download this data to a local file. For example, giving them a "csv" button to click and it might present them with a save file dialog (and I would be sending the contents of my string variable).Is this possible / how ?I am using the ResuableFX component for the datagrid to csv. This the code I ended up with that works to save the string to a text file for the user (in a web browser):

var dg2CSV:DataGrid2CSV = new DataGrid2CSV();
dg2CSV.includeHeader=true;
dg2CSV.target=adgEncounters;

Actionscript 2 :: Function's Local Variable Through A Concatenated Variable String?

how you would target a function's local variable through a concatenated variable string.For example:

var txt = "Hello World";
function testing(msg) {

I'd expect the trace to be "Hello World" but rather is given "undefined". So if variables created outside functions are created on the main timeline, where are local function variables created and how would you access them?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Convert XML To String?

Aug 10, 2010

I'm trying to convert an variable that contains XML data to a String. Anyone have a clue on how to achieve this?

My main problem is that the XML data is formatted nicely, but I need to store it in the database without the linebreaks and tab stops and whitespaces.

I think converting it into string would work with .toString();, but that doesn't get rid of the XML formatting...

ActionScript 3.0 :: Trying To Convert XML To A String

Oct 18, 2009

So I am trying to take an XML document, load it in, then organize the elements into an array of Objects with the elements nodes as the properties of each object.All of that I am able to do so far.What is the real problem here for me is when I try to take one of the properties and try to assign it to a dynamic Textbox's .text property.I can trace the object property, but it will not go into a textbox.[code]Also, I noticed that when the code hits the first output error, it never executes the rest of the code in the changeQuestion function; or else I would have gotten more than one output error.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Convert String To It?

Apr 18, 2011

I have an array of string values that represent accessors to another array. I need to be able to use those to access the secondary array, so I need to find a simple way to convert the string to the actual array accessor.[code]...

However, it seems like there should be some way to cast the string into AS, that Flash can use to access the proper array, without having to do the complex string.slice statement.

Something like: var str:String = ActionScript(arr3[i]); would be much easier to type, as many times as I'm going to need it, than the .slice statements.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Change String Variable To A MovieClip Variable?

Oct 10, 2008

I have been banging my head against a brick wall regarding the following problem which must be very simple to fix, just can't see the answer.I have a class assigned to a movieclip called canvas. The class is called drawClass. I have called the instance of canvas on the stage 'drawingCanvas'.When I trace "drawingCanvas" I get object drawClass] which is fine. Tracing drawingCanvas.name gets me the instance name 'drawingCanvas'.This is a String variable.Basically what I am trying to do is pass the MovieClip name to another class. In my example the class 'toolBar', which can then interact with the MovieClip.

The problem is passing 'drawingCanvas.name' results in a String, so I get an error saying :TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert "canvasArea" to flash.display.MovieClip.I can't for love or money find a way to convert a String variable to a MovieClip variable! I have the name of the MovieClip, I just need to tell the toolbar class. But I can't find a way of doing this as the instance on stage is an object of drawingClass, not a MovieClip (unless MovieClips with attached classes are not treated as standard MovieClips?).

ActionScript 3.0 :: Convert String To UTF16(LE)

Jan 17, 2010

Is there a way to write a UTF-16 string into a ByteArray in Flash/AS3? Basically I have a string (var test:String="allan"; for example) and I would like to write that into a ByteArray with UTF-16(LE) encoding. In this case it would be "61 00 6C 00 6C 00 61 00 6E 00".

I've tried using utf16le.writeMultiByte( clipText, "utf-16" ); but it just comes out with what appears to be UTF8 (or just straight ASCII given the test string).
