Is it possible to convert a given variable name to a string?
ActionScript Code:
function vartostring(mystring:String) {
//something like var newstring:String = parsevarname(mystring)
trace (newstring);//output 'hello'
}
vartostring(hello);
Can I convert a string to a variable?For example:
Code:
var left = -100;
toVar( "left" );
function toVar(side)
{
trace(side); // I want to trace out -100 instead of "left"
}
Naturally I can remove the quotes in my function call so it would represent the variable instead of a string, but can I convert the string to the variable within the function?
I have been searching and searching but I have yet to come up with something that works.
Im new to Actionscript so I suspect this is somthing basic that I am missing[code]...
This my starting-point
1 I have to use a swf like: whatever.swf?file=abc1234
2 file=abc1234 represents the name of the xml file i need to load like[code]...
I made a sound file:
menuSound120 = new Sound(new URLRequest(http://audio.ngfiles.com/155000/155242_House_Rhythm.mp3))
I want to convert the name of this sound file to a string that reads "menuSound120." When I tried menuSound120.toString() I just got [object Sound].
Is there a simple way to convert an instance variable to a String?
View 2 RepliesIs there a way to convert a string to a Movieclip. so if i have an item in the library called: A and a text field on the stage with a show button. And say I typed A and clicked the submit button it would show the A mc. I get an error...
1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: charUC.
ActionScript Code:
submit_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, up)
function up (e:MouseEvent):void {
var char:String=myText.text.charAt(0)
var charUC=char.toLocaleUpperCase()
trace(charUC)
var mc:charUC = new charUC();
addChild(mc);
mc.x = currentSpot;
currentSpot = currentSpot + 100;
}
How do I join two strings into a movieclip so that it works out to string1_mc.string2_mc i.e.
var monthID = "monthCal"+newMonth
var dayID = "day"+monthArray[newMonth][e].eventDate;
trace(this[monthID]._name) // this works and traces the correct name
trace(this[monthID].calendar_mc.this[dayID]._name); // this does not work.
the dayID is in calendar_mc, which is in the monthID
I have been banging my head against a brick wall regarding the following problem which must be very simple to fix, just can't see the answer.I have a class assigned to a movieclip called canvas. The class is called drawClass. I have called the instance of canvas on the stage 'drawingCanvas'.When I trace "drawingCanvas" I get object drawClass] which is fine. Tracing drawingCanvas.name gets me the instance name 'drawingCanvas'.This is a String variable.Basically what I am trying to do is pass the MovieClip name to another class. In my example the class 'toolBar', which can then interact with the MovieClip.
The problem is passing 'drawingCanvas.name' results in a String, so I get an error saying :TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert "canvasArea" to flash.display.MovieClip.I can't for love or money find a way to convert a String variable to a MovieClip variable! I have the name of the MovieClip, I just need to tell the toolbar class. But I can't find a way of doing this as the instance on stage is an object of drawingClass, not a MovieClip (unless MovieClips with attached classes are not treated as standard MovieClips?).
i have to make an addchild to a movieclip, but i really don't know how to make it with a dynamic name.
for example
private function buttonClicked(nameOfTheButt:String):void
{
thumbs.addChild(nameOfTheButt);
}
[Code]....
I've a general question on accessing a MovieClip by using a variable.Here's a super stripped down version of the code I'm trying to implement:
var mcVar:String = MC1;
addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, eF);
function eF(e:Event):void{
[code].....
I'm trying to reference a variable of type String as a MovieClip that is linked from the library. For example, I have a linked library movieclip called HomeFrame, in my class I have a variable with "Home" and need to create an instance of HomeFrame based on the string I receive.[code]
View 4 Replieshow do convert the myString var which is a string to the class name?
var myString:String = "movieClipInTheLibraryClassName"
var t:myString = myString()
f you know PHP...then you know that you can create a string variable...and then use the value of that variable to declare another variable. like this:
PHP Code:
<?php$foo = "haha";$i{$foo} = "success";print $i{haha};?>
and it would display "success"...or like this:
PHP Code:
<?php$foo = "haha";$$foo = "success";print $haha;?>
and it would also display "success".
I have a String variable in my flex (flash builder 4) application containing CSV data. I need to allow the user to download this data to a local file. For example, giving them a "csv" button to click and it might present them with a save file dialog (and I would be sending the contents of my string variable).Is this possible / how ?I am using the ResuableFX component for the datagrid to csv. This the code I ended up with that works to save the string to a text file for the user (in a web browser):
var dg2CSV:DataGrid2CSV = new DataGrid2CSV();
dg2CSV.includeHeader=true;
dg2CSV.target=adgEncounters;
[code]......
If i have an ASP page that is returning variables (and I can see them in the debugger) how do i consentrate a string to call that variable?
ie:
variables being returned are named:
"res1", "res2", "res3"...etc
for (var i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
[Code]...
Trying to replace a portion of a string with a "-" if it matches a string variable in AS3.
var re:RegExp = new RegExp(imageArray[j][1],"gi"); trace(imageArray[jTemp][2].replace(re,"-"));
imageArray[jTemp][2] is a string imageArray[j][1] is a string as well I'm not getting the result I expect. I would like trace above to return 'permanentContainer-' Here are the traces for the above variables
permanentContainer-temporaryContainer- temporaryContainer
my movieclip button was working perfectly as a motion tween. Can you use shape tweens as movie clip buttons? I just made that change, and kept my code:
[Code]....
I am working on to slide a movieclip across the stage.The movie clip is five times the width of the stage and I am using the Tween Class to move it across the stage when a button is pressed.The interaction I want is that when the button is pressed the movie clip moves a certain amount.If the button is pressed again it moves further.The script I have come up with though is taking the movieclip back to the original position of the movieclip and then moving it as opposed to moving it from the position it reached after the first button click.I have tried a few things but nothing is working.The script I am using at present is:[code]
View 5 RepliesI want to take the following information, which I have as a string in Flash, and convert it into an XML object in AS3:
// information
<list>
<a>
[code].....
how you would target a function's local variable through a concatenated variable string.For example:
var txt = "Hello World";
function testing(msg) {
var test1 = msg;[code].........
I'd expect the trace to be "Hello World" but rather is given "undefined". So if variables created outside functions are created on the main timeline, where are local function variables created and how would you access them?
I'm trying to convert an variable that contains XML data to a String. Anyone have a clue on how to achieve this?
My main problem is that the XML data is formatted nicely, but I need to store it in the database without the linebreaks and tab stops and whitespaces.
I think converting it into string would work with .toString();, but that doesn't get rid of the XML formatting...
Code:
function f_choosePhoto(photoNum)
{
var photos:Array = ["photo0","photo1","photo2"];
[Code].....
I've cobbled the AS together from a couple of seperate tutorials, and if I replace "new this[path](560, 380);" with "new photo1(560, 380);" it works.
I want to simply some repetitive code like this:
letter1.gotoAndPlay(Math.round(Math.random()*letter1.totalFrames));letter2.gotoAndPlay(Math.round(Math.random()*letter2.totalFrames));letter3.gotoAndPlay(Math.round(Math.random()*letter3.totalFrames));
I want to store letter1... into a string array. so I can call all of them with a loop.
Been searching for a simple way to do this but it's not out there, or is it?
I simply need to convert a sting to an int. The string will be a number, that is a given.
So I am trying to take an XML document, load it in, then organize the elements into an array of Objects with the elements nodes as the properties of each object.All of that I am able to do so far.What is the real problem here for me is when I try to take one of the properties and try to assign it to a dynamic Textbox's .text property.I can trace the object property, but it will not go into a textbox.[code]Also, I noticed that when the code hits the first output error, it never executes the rest of the code in the changeQuestion function; or else I would have gotten more than one output error.

View 5 RepliesI have an array of string values that represent accessors to another array. I need to be able to use those to access the secondary array, so I need to find a simple way to convert the string to the actual array accessor.[code]...
However, it seems like there should be some way to cast the string into AS, that Flash can use to access the proper array, without having to do the complex string.slice statement.
Something like: var str:String = ActionScript(arr3[i]); would be much easier to type, as many times as I'm going to need it, than the .slice statements.
