ActionScript 2.0 :: For Statement Using Incrementing Variable - Dynamic Names

Dec 10, 2004

I have a for statement, using an incrementing variable "a." A dynamic amount of herbs are generated, so here is the for statement.
Code:
for(a=1; a<_global.herbAmount+1; a++) {
var herbMC = _root["herb"+a];
trace(herbMC);
}
When I trace "a," it traces 1, 2, 3 or however many numbers there are up to the global herbAmount number. When I trace _root["herb"], _level0.herb pops out. When I add "a" onto _root["herb"], undefined is traced....why?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Dynamic Array Names In A For Statement?

Nov 27, 2007

I am making an XML multiple-gallery flash site for a client. The chunk of code I am having trouble with is populating the thumbmails section of the site with all the pictures in all the galleries. The image paths are brought in and stored in an array - one array for each gallery's image paths. The problem is that when I try to cycle through all the images to put them into movie clips (using a fore statement) I am having trouble dynamically addressing the arrays. More specifically, flash interprets them as strings, and does not evaluate the variables in them.

Code:
function images(i){
var temp:Number = eval("g"+i+"im.length");
for (var r:Number=1; r<=temp; r++){

[Code]....

The argument images() takes is the gallery number (from another function). I have tried using eval() and trace to see what the problem is. Basically I can make it output the correct STRINGS, but flash will not convert the variables in the strings! So in the URL (first arg) of loadMovie it is seeing something like "g2im[3]" as a string, and not evaluating it to the value at index 4 of that array.

I have set up a roll_over / roll_out listener that works for me, but the event only applies to "inBulb_mc". As I have it set now, a bunch of squares are blinking through random colors. I want the mouseover to pause this event no matter which mc i mouse over. Is there a way to indicate that this should work for any instancename "inBulb_mc"+number.

using a variable such as i=0; i++ ; won't work because i need it to happen wherever the mouse is.

Quote:

inBulb_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, manageMouseOver, false, 0, true);
inBulb_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, manageMouseOut, false, 0, true);

Is there a way to set it up so that the listener works for all instances of inBulb_mc, be it inBulb_mc0 inBulb_mc1 inBulb_mc2 etc

ActionScript 2.0 :: ASP And Dynamic Variable Text Box Names

Nov 23, 2005

Having a problem with a Flash/ASP/Database project.I've seen tutorials that pulls address book listings dynamically from the DB. When you hit "next" button it just populates dynamic text fields with variable names like "name" "address" with the appropriate info. Problem I'm having is.. what if you want to display all the entries on the same screen.If the variable names on the dynamic text fields are hard coded named "name" "address" "phone number" etc. , how can the second set of info display underneath the first one properly and not just pull the same text from the first record into the text fields? (name2, address2, etc.)

Is there a way to dynamically change the variable name of a dynamic text field? I'm thinking you should be able to have it note how many records there are, then loop until it reaches the end of the record set. So, can the variable names be dynamic so it will populate the text fields with the appropriate info?

Actionscript 3 :: Why Isn't Variable Incrementing

Feb 18, 2012

When the user presses the space bar, I'm trying to take one string from a series of strings labeled c1-c9, break it into an array, display that array, and then increment the linenumber variable at the end of the function so that the next time the space bar is pressed, the next string in the series is traced and so on and so forth. Here is the relevant section of script (the strings and the linenumber variable have been declared earlier)

[Code].....

Every time I press the space bar, though, I just get the traces of the initial string and linenumber value repeated without any incrementing. I think it may have something to do with the "this" before the bracket in this line var displayarray:Array = this["c" + linenumber].split(" "); which I found in a code sample on some website and do not understand at all, but I get compiler errors if I try to join the "c" and the line number without the "this" there.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Rotation And Incrementing Variable?

Sep 28, 2009

I'm working on a flash movie that involves the use of rotating 3 objects in a matter that the first one moves 18000 degrees cw according to the value in the 'num' variable. The 2nd object rotates -1800 degrees. The third one rotates 180 degrees.

What I actually want to do is create a movie of the older analogue electric meters that had the 5 dials that represented each digit so if the far right dial moved from 0 to 5 the 2nd would move the opposite way to be between 0 and 1 and the third a hair to the right of '0' and so on in increments of 1/10.

When I run the below code the dials ( I currently useing jetplanes until I draw or locate a pointer image file as well as the circle with 0-9 marked off in it) stay on 500 and should be moving a bit since I have another variable that increments num by 1. I tried using the Timer event and would get several errors. I also know that the way it runs now doesn't work since num is going to be assign the same value of 18000 since I have it setup to gotoAndPlay(1) in frame 2. How would I be able to have it so that so it would increment without getting undefined variables. I also tried a for loop to increment the num but the stage would instantly show the end result after the loop was done.

code
--------------
var num:Number = 18000;
var i:Number= 0;

ActionScript 2.0 :: TweenLite - Assign Incrementing Variable To AttachMovie

Aug 13, 2008

I have a script which places a clip on the stage (well, just off it), and rotates the clip and then tweens it to a certain x/y coordinate based on the rotation using TweenLite, and all of this on a setInterval of 2 milliseconds. That works well. Thing is, I don't seem to be able to set a unique name based on the clipname and an incrementing number. Basically (and this isn't the whole thing, this is just the general idea), it goes:

Code:
interval = setinterval("dothis", 2);
var increment=0;
function dothis(){
attachMovie(movieICall, "movieICall" + increment; 1)
movieICall._x = ;
_y= etc;
increment++;
}

So when I set the interval to 2 seconds, it moves everything well and there are no problems. When I set the interval to 2 milliseconds, the clips only get just onto the screen before disappearing. I've tried creating a function to handle the x,y, tween. So I could refer to the clip with a "this", but it doesn't change anything. The only thing I can think of is that movieICall is not incrementing, and every clip on the screen is being referred to as movieICall, in which case the next case of x, y, tweening overwrites that last one and effectively kills the last one (but then why is it not just left sitting on the screen)? I tried adding an overwrite: false to the end of the TweenLite, but that only let the tween happen once and then...nothing.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Instance Names And Variable Names: It Goes Deeper

Mar 20, 2011

I started a thread about a reference to a symbol House, in the output window, which was: House_1. A lot of people said some useful things about that. All day I've been thinking about it, and I came to the conclusion that I don't understand things, at a very basic level.

Consider:I make a movieclip which I give the Symbol name Drawer. (I don't export it for AcitonScript.)On the stage I manually place two instances of this Symbol. The first one I give the Instance Name drawer (in the properties panel). The second one I leave nameless.Now if I trace the names of both these clips, by

trace(this.getChildAt(0).name);
trace(this.getChildAt(1).name);

the output window gives me

drawer
instance2

Now I know that the so-called "instance name" which I gave in the Properties Panel (drawer) is, in reality, a variable name which Flash gives my first instance behind the scenes. And instance2 is a name that Flash gives my second instance. What exactly the nature of that name is, I do not know.My point is: both names (drawer and instance2) are the .name property of these movieclips. Otherwise I could not have traced them through asking for the .name property, in the above. Yet only the first of these two can be manipulated:

drawer.x can be set;
instance2.x can (as we know) not be set.

But...why? What is the real difference between these two kinds of names? How can they both be the .name property of their underlying movieclip, yet be of such a different nature? What IS the nature of the instance2 name? If it's a String, how come the .name property of one movieclip can be a variable name, while the .name property of another (but identical) movieclip is a String?

I've searched every bit of web page on the net I could find. But it looks as if nobody addresses this issue. We all just work with it - but it makes no bloody sense. A name property = a name property, you'd think. Whether Flash set it or I set it should not make a difference. The x property of a clip, for example, does not change in nature according to who set it - me or Flash.So, again, just to emphasize the problem: how can a property (the name property) of a movieclip change in NATURE depending on who set it? After it's been set, shouldn't the name property of a clip be of exactly the same nature as the name property of another clip?

Actionscript 3 :: Combine Multiple Variable Names Together To Target New Variable

Jan 31, 2012

I'm still learning flash and actionscript 3 and i am having trouble with variable and object names. I need to be able to combine variable names together (in the same way as php can combine by doing var1.var2).

My swf contains 4 loaders (image1_loader, image2_loader etc..) which are a child of (image1_content, image2_content etc.....)
I then have 4 buttons which load an image into the loader and while doing so they define the currently active loader.
Finally i have 4 control buttons - scale up/down and rotate clockwise/anticlockwise which should only control the currently active loader (as set by the buttons above)

So my buttons as well as loading the image have the event listener:

image1_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, setCurrentSelection);
image2_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, setCurrentSelection);
(and so on..)
function setCurrentSelection(e:MouseEvent):void {

[Code]...

So within the rotateClockwise and rotateAntiClockwise functions i need to be able to recognise which is the currently active loader and have that number instead of the X - so if it is image1_loader - it needs to be image1_content, if 4 - image4_content... I had tried to do it as this but it doesn't like it being a string:

rotateAroundCenter((activeLoader+'_content'), 10, ptR);

They have their own .AS files which tells them everything they need to know about themselves. I figured i would do most of the hit testing on the bullet.AS file, hit testing against the wolves as there were going to be a set number of wolves but not a set number of bullets.o, I named them by running a loop and putting the linenewWolf.name = i.toString();Yes, new wolf is a declared variable, and i is the name of the variable that makes the loop run. I also have a test in it, and it works fine.

However, The hit testing is where i come into an issue. Remember, its on a seperate .AS file. The wolf maker and namer is on the main flash page.The hit testing function isif(this.hitTestObject(a)){i changed up my variable name to run a second loop. first variable name is "i" and the second variable name is "a"And for some reason i get a type error 1034, which from what i understand is an error that you get when two instance names are the same. Also, If possible, i would like to add letters to the name of the object, but im not sure if flash will let me as i belive the code would look something like this

Actionscript 3 :: Multiple Dynamic Text Score Display - Modifying Each Text One After Another And Incrementing The Score By A Certain Number

Feb 23, 2011

I have a result screen that shows bonus points and such. I want each text field to increment one after another and also have it increment by a certain amount each frame. Result Screen pops up. First is the player score check the player score, is it more than the score we want to display if the player score is greater than the player display score by 100 increase the player display score by 100 if the player score is greater than the player display score by 10 increase the player display score by 10 else increase the player display score by 1 when finished move to the next score...and so on. I have thought of using timers to move from one score to the next, but not being in an Event.ENTER_FRAME it only does one if then moves to the next one.

Also the if statement for incrementing the score looks ridiculous and I'm thinking there has to be a better way to do it. I was thinking of making it a separate function but then I wouldn't know what to return, or how to return it so it looks like its increasing and not just showing the total number instantly. I'll try to expand on it a little more.
