ActionScript 2.0 :: Opinion Sought On Explicit Type Conversion?

Mar 24, 2006

I am a novice and am educating myself about AS.Reading through Datatypes and conversion, I came across different methods to converting data into "string".

1) by using the toString() method

2) by using the String() function

3) converting to a string using empty string concatenation :- x + "";

My questions are :

a) which of the three is the preferable method?

b)Why?

c) Are there any specific instances when one is preferred over the other?

Actionscript 3 :: Define Implicit Or Explicit Type Conversions

Sep 24, 2010

Is there any way for me to define implicit or explicit type conversions in ActionScript?For instance, I want to define a conversion such that Array can cast into MyClass implicitly. If not, an explicit cast would be useful. I know I can always pass it into my constructor, but I am dealing with semantics here, and I am most interested in a conversion solution if it exists.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Builder 4.6 Type Conversion Number To A String

Apr 2, 2012

I have a Flash Builder 4.6 project that is referencing an external ActionScript calculation library (swc). I am having some annoying issues when trying to convert a number to a string for display.

[CODE]...

The first assignment of totalFuelCosts is fine, but the second to totalEmissions constantly gives me the following error: 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type String to an unrelated type Number I initially used toString() which worked fine, then about 10 minutes later gave me an error. So I switch to String() which again works fine, then about 10 minutes later gives me an error. I have also click 'Project' 'Clean' and cleaned all projects, this clears the error, but it comes back again about 10 minutes later.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Conversion Utility That Uses Number Input Via Calculator Style Buttons To Generate Conversion

Mar 13, 2012

im trying to create a conversion utility that uses number input via calculator style buttons to generate conversion for the following distances:

-Miles to/from KM
-cm to/from mm
-binary to/from decimal

Now i was thinking of possibly having the options contained within an drop down and an input text field where the numbers are entered via the calculator buttons. The only thing im struggling with is how to perform the actual calculations on the different formats. Has anyone had to do anything similar in the past? Ive only found currency conversion examples and not sure how to apply that to these conversions.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Making Own Application Kit / Need Opinion About Skinning Components

May 20, 2011

I need your opinion on best way of skinning components do you prefer raster or prosperity based styling like CSS? or maybe you like the Flash way of styling with IDE? Raster vs. Vector which many have mentioned, there is much of a complexity when applying custom skins to components.I know that the flash at its origin where designed to draw vector graphics, by i'm personaly not a huge fan of vector.Many bigger widget/application kits are based on using multiple bitmaps to draw their custom style onto regular components.Maybe this is the way to go? when building a custom framework i in a dead zone where i don't know which way to go, if should go with property styling or bitmap skinning. Bitmaps sounds more fun and more complex styles can be made with bitmaps including noise..Generally i want your opinion for implement the structure that to most developers/designer are comfortable with

For the past half year i have been working on my pride.Im under develop of a new cutting edge application platform. This enterprise application and the platform is build onto my custom developed as3 framework that handles much of what a modern (minimal) operation system does. Inspired by Gskinners (old) Flash OS (cant not post the link as signed to as.org today).

Flex :: 4 - Unset The Explicit Height Value Of A Component?

Mar 22, 2011

When a container component is declared without setting an specific height value, the contaniner's height will be automatically set to a value which makes possible to display all of its content/children without scrolling (when possible). After the component is initialized with the proper height, I explicitly change the height value of the container.

My question is, after I change the component's height, is it possible to switch back to the original height that was automatically set based on the containers contents? I'm looking for some way to unset the explicit value of the component's height.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Duplicating MovieClip From External SWF Without Explicit Linkage

Mar 5, 2010

In Flash CS3 I was able to duplicate any MovieClip from an external SWF by loading the SWF, and then executing the following code:
var targetClass:Class = MovieClipToDuplicate.constructor;
var duplicate:MovieClip = new targetClass();

Note that the MovieClips I was duplicating did NOT have any linkage explicitly defined. Flash would automatically assign a unique class to each MovieClip. Now, in Flash CS4, when I try to do the same thing the .constructor property returns only the "MovieClip" class, such that the "duplicate" variable above is but a blank MovieClip. If I compile the external SWF using CS3, my old code still works. But I want to do it in CS4.

Actionscript 3 :: Reset A Flex Label Width To "auto" After Setting An Explicit Width?

Oct 12, 2009

Once I've set either the width or percentWidth property on a flex label, is there a way to reset the width to its default (i.e., the width of the text plus padding)? I'm using the label as a renderer. In some cases, I'd like it to automatically size to the text, and in other cases, I'd like it to be a percentage width of its container. Obviously, I could use two separate labels, one for each of the above cases, but I'm curious if it's possible to reset the label to its default behavior.

Flash To DVD Conversion

Aug 6, 2010

I have been creating animations for children, and recently finished an animated short. I am more of an artist than a techie, and I have not been able to find a clear cut answer as to what is the best way to convert flash to DVD. What file should be converted to achieve the best quality? SWF? MOV file? Is there a way to do it from flash? from Adobe Premier? I tried the AVI output and the quality was terrible.

Is a seperate converter needed? If so, are which give the best quality audio and visually? Here are some of the basic requirements for an animated short entry: DVDs must be compatible with standard set-top DVD players-- do not simply burn a quicktime or AVI file to a disc as data. It is highly preferred that you send us an NTSC, Region 1 or region free (Region 0) DVD when submitting to us, but we will also accept PAL and SECAM formats as well. If you are sending a DVD that has a region code other than 0 or 1, and/or a format other than NTSC, please mark this CLEARLY on the disc AND on the DVDcase.
