The first assignment of totalFuelCosts is fine, but the second to totalEmissions constantly gives me the following error: 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type String to an unrelated type Number I initially used toString() which worked fine, then about 10 minutes later gave me an error. So I switch to String() which again works fine, then about 10 minutes later gives me an error. I have also click 'Project' 'Clean' and cleaned all projects, this clears the error, but it comes back again about 10 minutes later.

The string (score0.text) will have an "s" at the end as the time is counted in seconds and tenths, so I will be receiving something along the lines of "8.1s" as a value.. I would like to take score0.text, remove the "s" then *1000 the amount as a number before use..
Inside my code i have some variables declared as Numbers, and i get some others from an external source; these variables can either be Numbers or String representation of Numbers. Now, i have to implement some equality controls on these variables, and since i don't know in that moment which type are them of, i'm converting all of them to Numbers (i don't need and neither want to compare strings) via the Number() function which accepts either Numbers or Strings as an input. im trying to create a conversion utility that uses number input via calculator style buttons to generate conversion for the following distances:
-Miles to/from KM
-cm to/from mm
-binary to/from decimal
Now i was thinking of possibly having the options contained within an drop down and an input text field where the numbers are entered via the calculator buttons. The only thing im struggling with is how to perform the actual calculations on the different formats. Has anyone had to do anything similar in the past? Ive only found currency conversion examples and not sure how to apply that to these conversions.
I am having problems getting information that was calculated to display the results in a dynamic text box. It is pulling information from 3 separate boxes and making two calculations. View 6 RepliesI have parsed the data from an xml doc to global vars in flash and need to use a few of them as numbers for things the position of "nodes" on the screen. However I can not cast the data stored as a var to a number or int value.
For example in the code below when the set Node button is pressed it traces the "Node's" current X value, then the value in the global var gotten from the xml, which contains the x position of where to place the Node.
Next it creates a new var of Number Type and assigns it the Number value of the string in global var. It then traces the new value of SNtopLeftX and sets the x pos of the Node's movie clip to the value of SNtopLeftX However the Node doesn't move and this is the output I get from the traces
Start Node is at x = -734.5
nod_topLeftX is 16
TopLeftX = 16
SN TopLeftX = NaN
I do not understand why I am getting NaN when the string of nod_topLefX is 16, any ideas?

I am a novice and am educating myself about AS.Reading through Datatypes and conversion, I came across different methods to converting data into "string".
1) by using the toString() method
2) by using the String() function
3) converting to a string using empty string concatenation :- x + "";
My questions are :
a) which of the three is the preferable method?
b)Why?
c) Are there any specific instances when one is preferred over the other?

For example, I load a variable with the value "0xFFFFFF" from a file. This varaible is a String. I want to use the value in a SetRGB function, but it can not handle String, and can't do the conversion itself. So, how can make such a conversion ?

that's the default way to convert a String:

but I wan't to do this:

conversion of String(myNumber) also gives "1.7999999999999998"
This only happens with certain numbers. If (myNumber == 1.4) it doesn't give me this problem.
I've checked with the debugger and the values are correct both before and after the trace or String conversion. However, the string itself is incorrect.

I'm trying to play a random gallary image by making it stops at different frame every few seconds, and the actions is completely random.
The problem is, since there are only 5 different images(5 frames) I'm displaying, there is a high probability that it stays at the same frame, how do I avoid that? Like avoid staying at the same page twice, if not run the function again.

But I keep getting an "Error #2030: End of file was encountered." This is (probably) because the class I'm serializing is too big for the "String" object type in AS3. Is there a limitless object for storing an array of characters (or better yet binary), or am I going to have to make my own class? (like one with an array of strings)
