I have developed a video player in flash 8 with actionscript 2.0. The problem I am having is that it uses something like 30%-45% of my cpu, 1,73 GHz. Is this normal and can u code it smarter for lower cpu usage?

with 320*240; it is using 30~50 % CPU; with 480*360: 40-60% CPU at the clients. so high... decent client machine: Intel i5 650. Quad 3.3Ghz 8G RAM. win7 64
I'm in the process of including a 1 minute .flv into a flash doc. I don't want to stream the video since i want the video to load almost instantly and do not have any room for streaming progress bars also i can't use flash8 and to get video to stream in flash 6 is a pain.
What i have planned to do now was slice up the 1 minute video into 6/ 10sec clips. Put each clip in a seperate external movie which will range from 50-100kb each in kb's. I want to preload the first video and then play it, then in the background load external video2 while external 1 is playing. then play external 2 at the end of external video1 and do the same for the rest of the videos. Its a lot more work but i think this way i can reduce load time and have the video play almost straight away.
What do you guys think? is there a easy way to do it and achieve the same results or should i continue with my concept above, and if i do what i have planned is there any code that you can direct me too that will load a movie / hide it and play when called for?
My problem is going to be hard to outlay in detail due to NDA's I am bound to, but the gist is this..I have a swf application the progressively streams content from a cdn edge server.I have built a video player class and instantiate a new one for each new piece of footage I find.Naturally this requires good memory management to ensure no leaks..... and herein lies the problem (surprise).
I have unregistered all my event listeners (not using weak at present) and nulled all objects from my media player object.I slice it from my list and call a destroy method that cleans up all objects setting references to null. Once this is done I call System.gc().My profiling tools are showing that my memory usage is continuing to increase linearly for each new video clip. The jump is about 5mb each time the approx size of each video file.
Is the built in "Video" component on the stage (players all share the same one) a built in type?
Quick question - I have the following setup:
(1) An ec2 instance with an SWF on it - this SWF plays streaming video - i.e. is a video player like JWPlayer
(2) A streaming video distribution set up via Cloudfront
If I stream the the video via RTMP from Cloudfront to the SWF (which is on ec2) - would I incur charges for data transfer into the server (i.e. for data being read by the SWF) and out of the server (i.e. for data being displayed by the SWF to the user) on account of streaming the video to users (assuming that data transfer into and out for the server is being charged for)?
I am in a requirement where I need to calculate the bandwidth usage of rtmp streaming. Is there any way I can calculate the number of total bytes I have download during the rtmp streaming?

Configuration of the servers all based on IIS: webserver (authentification, xml data loaded by Flash app, data (on IIS) sended to and recieve from FMS). Seperate FMS 3.5 (latest update) server. Only running FMS (no other apps are running on this machine).

We have one functionality in which one user can communicate with the other user at the same time through flash media server3.5. In this fucnitonality we are catching stream from both end through camera and pass it to flash media server. On FMS side this streams gets stored also we are displaying those recorded flv files side by side to the corresponding user so that they can communicate with each other. In this situation we are facing a video and audio latency upto 1.5 to 2 sec.

View 6 RepliesI've been deploying video to the web via Flash for a couple years now and I was curious if anyone has experience with / knows if deploying video via a Flash Media Server or any other type of video centric server has a significant impact on performance playback? I've noticed lately that with YouTube content, often available in "HQ" or "HD" that the video playback suffers very marginally when switching to higher quality video. However, with video players I have developed, using HTTP progressive download, CPU usage often spikes during download of the video and decreases once it's been cached. I've also recently employed pseudo-streaming techniques with the help of XMOOV but this doesn't seem to have much of an effect on CPU usage during video download.
My video player was developed in AS3 and while it's not using a class based structure, it does follow general OOP techniques. Would a class based video player improve performance? Also note that the only video that makes use of XMOOV is the "Make a Wish" video as it's been injected with the necessary metadata.
I am looking to broadcast live video and need a camera that is better than a simple webcam. It looks like they used to make video cameras that would register as webcams, but stopped making them.If you wanted to broadcast an event live, what would be a good camera to use?

but just before the video streams, there is a quick flash of the video (about 320px by 240px) at the top corner of the stage, and then it plays the videos at the correct size (which is 1280 by 720) .... a quick flash is the best way I can explain it.

I wrote an application in flash AS3, and when I trace from flash the total memory usage of the total application is only about 9MB, But at the same time Task Manager Shows the memory usage as 110MB. Around 100MB difference.Flash Trace Method System.totalMemory difference of the Trace from the Beginning of the application to end of the application.
View 2 RepliesGot a large file 12 minutes long clip and I compressed it with the adobe optimization program adobe media encoder. I got a 350 megbite file to be 60 megabites as a 320X240. I choose also a medium size video file. How do I keep the video quality and stream it (like hulu would do) or how do I compress it smaller than 60 megabites and keep the same quality. Either or. I am not familiar with web video so I am trying to make the file as small as I can in size with the most amount of quality.
View 3 RepliesI'm new to the streaming video world but I do have FMS 3.5 up and running and have encoded some wmv and mp4 videos to flv using adobe encoder CS4. I followed the tutorials and have created the swf files in flash CS4 and the videos are streaming as expected.
The primary issue I am having is the videos tend to be choppy at times. They pause, run slowly, audio pops and just overall; glitchy. Typically at the beginning but some times throughout. The test files at the FMS admin page stream fine without issue from the same server. We have tested the site/streams from multiple providers all at cable modem speed or above.

View 2 RepliesI'm trying to decide whether, for my particular application, I would be better off delivering video via streaming or progressive download. Here's the situation: Background: this will be a learning drill for learning foreign language phrases. There will be a series of ten short video clips, each one a headshot of a native speaker, saying a single sentence. The background is static so the only thing changing will be facial expressions, so compression should be pretty effective. Each clip will be approximately 4-6 seconds total length. Resolution will be approximately 360 X 270.
The way this particular drill works makes me wonder if perhaps progressive downloading might make more sense than streaming. But like I said, I'm not a Flash developer, so I could easily be wrong. (Did I mention we're currently looking for a talented, reliable Flash developer?) So here's how it will work: Drill will load up showing written text of instructions, along with audio of the narrator reading the instructions aloud. Approximate length of the audio instructions will be 15 seconds. (I"m thinking progressive download could begin during the reading of the instructions.)
After the instructions have been read, the intructional text goes away and is replaced with (from top to bottom) the text for the first sentence, the video box with a static image of the first frame, a "Begin" button. When the user clicks the "Begin" button, the video begins to play, and the "Begin" button transforms into a "Repeat" button, which is inactive while the video plays. When the video ends, the "Repeat" button becomes active. Clicking the "Repeat Button" causes the same video clip to play a second time (again, the "Repeat" button is inactive while video plays.
I am trying to stream an FLV file into a Video object by attaching a netStream using attachNetStream(). This works fine for local files as well as downloading files from a different domain; however, I am trying to download an FLV from php file that sends these headers:
Content-Type: video/x-flv Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="video.flv"
The netStream object responds as though there is no problem, outputting:
NetStream.Play.StartNetStream.Buffer.FullNetStream.Buffer.FlushNetStream.Play.StopNetStream.Buffer.Empty
But The video does not play on the Video object. If I download the video from that php link and save it locally, then have the netStream load it from there, it works just fine.
Why is this happening? I was trying to use URLStream as a way around this, but I couldn't figure out a way to attach a URLStream to a Video.

View 2 RepliesI have a problem with an embedded flash video not playing to the end, it stops around half way It is a 4 minute video with sound, the FLV file is around 24Mo This is a normal server not a flash streaming server .
I have at least 10 other sites on line with a flash video on the home page and they all work fine.on the same server.only difference is that this file is about 10 Mo bigger on average.
I contacted the company where my server is hosted and they say that it looks like a java script problem but I am using flash 8 pro standard <object> no java script to detect version etc.[code]...
I have a simple flash video player that streams the video from a streaming media server. The stream plays fine and I have no problems with playing the video and doing simple functions. However, my problem is that on a mouse over of the video, I have the controls come up and when I do a seek or scrub on the video, I get little weird boxes that show over the video - like little pockets - of the video playing super fast (you can basically see it seeking) until it gets to the point it needs to be at and then these little boxes disappear.
