View 9 RepliesI've been deploying video to the web via Flash for a couple years now and I was curious if anyone has experience with / knows if deploying video via a Flash Media Server or any other type of video centric server has a significant impact on performance playback? I've noticed lately that with YouTube content, often available in "HQ" or "HD" that the video playback suffers very marginally when switching to higher quality video. However, with video players I have developed, using HTTP progressive download, CPU usage often spikes during download of the video and decreases once it's been cached. I've also recently employed pseudo-streaming techniques with the help of XMOOV but this doesn't seem to have much of an effect on CPU usage during video download.
My video player was developed in AS3 and while it's not using a class based structure, it does follow general OOP techniques. Would a class based video player improve performance? Here is a link to a work in progress video player: [URL] Please try a couple videos and let me know if they play back smoothly and / or if you notice CPU spikes. Also note that the only video that makes use of XMOOV is the "Make a Wish" video as it's been injected with the necessary metadata.
My problem is going to be hard to outlay in detail due to NDA's I am bound to, but the gist is this..I have a swf application the progressively streams content from a cdn edge server.I have built a video player class and instantiate a new one for each new piece of footage I find.Naturally this requires good memory management to ensure no leaks..... and herein lies the problem (surprise).
I have unregistered all my event listeners (not using weak at present) and nulled all objects from my media player object.I slice it from my list and call a destroy method that cleans up all objects setting references to null. Once this is done I call System.gc().My profiling tools are showing that my memory usage is continuing to increase linearly for each new video clip. The jump is about 5mb each time the approx size of each video file.
Is the built in "Video" component on the stage (players all share the same one) a built in type?

we use the :80 I guess it helps to deal with the firewall with HTTP tunneling? (seems if it is true, it will this degrade performance?)
with 320*240; it is using 30~50 % CPU; with 480*360: 40-60% CPU at the clients. so high... decent client machine: Intel i5 650. Quad 3.3Ghz 8G RAM. win7 64
Quick question - I have the following setup:
(1) An ec2 instance with an SWF on it - this SWF plays streaming video - i.e. is a video player like JWPlayer
(2) A streaming video distribution set up via Cloudfront
If I stream the the video via RTMP from Cloudfront to the SWF (which is on ec2) - would I incur charges for data transfer into the server (i.e. for data being read by the SWF) and out of the server (i.e. for data being displayed by the SWF to the user) on account of streaming the video to users (assuming that data transfer into and out for the server is being charged for)?

View 2 RepliesI'm trying to create a flash file in which my handwritten name transforms/morphs into its creative 'tag' - like something a graffiti artist might put on a wall (not that i would do that though. I can't work out why the shape tweening doesn't want to work with me and I've been trying shape hints etc. I've just tried to attach a picture of what IO want the handwritten word 'charlie' to look like at the end of its flash morph but I can't even do that!

View 3 RepliesAs an experienced programmer in various environments (Linux,server side web development,etc), I was recently approached with an offer to do some Actionscript development.Somehow, it seems to me that unless one is artistically or visually creative or at least has some visual talent, one's Actionscript programming skills alone will not get you very far in flash development.Can one be a superb flash developer without having to make any artistic decisions, relying on graphic artists to tell you what to do? Or, should I stick to server side coding where I know I can add real value, even excel.

I wrote an application in flash AS3, and when I trace from flash the total memory usage of the total application is only about 9MB, But at the same time Task Manager Shows the memory usage as 110MB. Around 100MB difference.Flash Trace Method System.totalMemory difference of the Trace from the Beginning of the application to end of the application.

On my old computer (Windows XP) I was using Flashpaper to convert jpg files to swf files that can be panned and zoomed. It worked great for my website. Here is an example. [URL] I just purchased Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium for my new computer (Windows 7). I was told that it included the ability of Flashpaper to create the pan/zoom swf files. I can't find this ability. Please tell me where it is located or that I need to purchase Flashpaper for my new computer. Please note, I use Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver, but the only Flash I use is the swf to pan and zoom via Flashpaper. Please keep this in mind when answering my question, i.e. I probably need specifics if the functionality is located in Flash.
View 1 RepliesI'm looking at finding a way of recording the amount of times a swf is loaded or a button pressed with the aim of giving a client feedback about how their product is used.Basically I am creating a touch screen app for a client which will contain a couple of hundred images and the client would like to keep track of which images are loaded in and how many times.
I looked at Mochibot which seems good however I don't think this app I am building will be connected to the Internet. So that's not a viable option. So is it possible to output something locally? Which will get added too every time the app is used. Even if the computer and app are restarted?
Currently when I load my presentation that I have just recently created and testing I'm getting a HUGE spike in my cpu usage.
I'm running an i5 2.4, and it's nearly taking up 100%, a friend of mine is running a core 2 duo and it's taking up 100% of the cores.
What is a proper way to optimize for these occurances? I don't have any preloaders up and running yet.

I'm user of relatively weak computer (pentium IV 3.0 with hyper-threadingiem) but with a bit newer graphic card - asus radeon HD4650I'm not big new games fun, I'm useing my hardware most to internet access so I would rather not to buy new computer in the near future. But also I would like to have possibility to watch flash movies fluently on full screen (eg. youtube, video streeming). Unfortunatelly, till now, it was pretty weak. I got hope that afther new flash release (lately), which should use computing power of graphic card and making CPU work lighter.
Unfortunatelly, afther flash update (10.1) I haven't noticed any changes - everything work in the same way (not fluently) as at old flash. CPU usage is still ca.100% and GPU usage is 0% (I can see it in control panel) What is wrong? Is it this version of flash what should use GPU or it is not yet? Maybe I should configure something more? Or is it possible that I made something wrong? I've tried few times, made lots of work and combinations (instaling and reinstaling different versions of flashs, graphic card drivers, browsers changing etc) and still nothing.
I have a question concerning CPU usage for games. What do people consider as an average or 'acceptable' amount of cpu usage for a game I've created a few different games, some which are more database driven have a very low cpu usage and small size.. others I've seen go up to 80% cpu usage..
I do try to keep a careful eye on this (I mean 80% of one core, of which I have 8.. I'm not sure how this will reflect on a single core/processor machine) but it does really concern me because as soon as I add an 'enterframe' function, spin something around or create a fair size animation it piles on the intensity to the cpu.. are there any professional tips anybody could offer me please ? I really want to make the web a better place for others by not overloading their computers

Large flv (920 x460), with alpha channel (transparent background), Max data rate:300kbs,
codec : On2 VP6 encode alpha channel, framerate : same as source.

I would like to use the mouse wheel with a quiz I've been making.I have it set up so when you roll the mouse up it goes to the next question and when you roll it down it goes back to the previous question.It isn't working as I would like though, It doesn't scroll through increments of 1 - theres 50 questions in the test and its scrolling through them like this 1,2,4,8,16,32,FinishedIf anybody knows a way I could use the mouse wheel to scroll through the quiz.

System.totalMemory gives the total memory used by the flash player and not one particular application. Is there any way I can get the flex application's memory usage in code/actionscript?
View 3 RepliesI'm just started doing 'hands-on' learning of Actionscript 3 using FlashDevelop. I've now managed to subclass a sprite, load a graphic from the library, and manipulate it around the stage. Next step is doing the same with a MovieClip, but it doesn't seem to be as simple. Basically, I want a simple subclass of MovieClip, that uses a SWF that I created & exported in Flash CS5 (anything else that can create them?), and then added it into my library in FlashDevelop.
In my 'Main' class, I want something like this:

But that says the child is null, and I'm not sure I should be creating a 'new' MovieClip inside my sub-classed MovieClip anyways.
How much memory in bytes can Flash normally handle? I have a fairly involved program that is running at 39MB usage and now may be causing some memory issues (I'm not sure it's the memory, since it was running smoothly up until I made a few code changes and now Flash freezes after making those changes). But anyway, I have been wondering about memory usage and Flash CS3 and felt like this was a good topic to dicuss. Is there a way to force an increase in available memory for Flash?
View 2 RepliesI'm building a media player with alot of tweens in the interface , I'm wondering what is common or exceptable in the professional flash community.When I tween the whole Interface into another view firefox spikes to 12 - 16 cpu on a 3.01 GHz duo-core. Is this normal? acceptable? After the tween Firefox flunctuates between 2 - 8 cpu while idle.
