ActionScript 2.0 :: References To Variables Inside A Class

Mar 21, 2010

I'm pretty new to working wth custom classes, but so far everything has been working great - up to the point where I create more than one instance of the same kind of class. For example:

[CODE]...

Do I simply have to call the arrays different names??? I really don't want to, shouldn't by creating two different instances you subsequently create two different arrays in turn?

ActionScript 3.0 :: References Variables Across Classes?

Jan 12, 2012

I'm building a simple Pong-esque game and I've 'hit' a problem. I'm having an issue with referencing one variable from one class into another. Sounds confusing to me, even harder to understand.

Basically I've got this in my "game.as" class:

ActionScript Code:
public var pongBall:ball;

and in my "player1.as" class I am trying to get said ball to bounce off the player's bat on contact. I think I have the coding right for it apart from trying to link it to the ball from game.as! So far I have this:

ActionScript Code:
public function bounceTest (event:Event) {
if (this.hitTestObject("game.as".startGame.pongBall)) {

The function will get called but I need access to the class's instance variables inside display().

ActionScript 3.0 :: MovieClip References From A Class?

Jul 15, 2009

I have a files that has movie clips and nested movie clips on the stage. I am now writing a class and want to give the MCs event handlers and other properties.

When I do something like the following: myMC_mc.MyOtherMC_mc.mouseEnabled = false;

I get the error: 1120: Access of undefined property myMC_mc.

I added this to the top of my class and it seems to take away the error, but I thought this was not needed in AS3 anymore.

private var myMC_mc:MovieClip;
private var myMC_mc.MyOtherMC_mc:MovieClip;

What do I have to do to not get the error? How is this done right?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Manipulating Class References In A Array?

Feb 27, 2010

i retrieve a list of instances located in a array to manipulate them in a variable holder. Normally, the operations can be made between two instances stored in a simple variable to variable fashion and it works realy fast.I analysed two main operations: retrieving references in a array to a variable and get or set a value from the variable reference.Here are the objects used to perform the test operation:

var v4:Vector.<Person>= new Vector.<Person>();//List of Persons instance
var refHolder:Person; //Typed referencevar refHolder2:*;   //Not typed reference
 Test #1: looping 200 000 times and only retrieving references from the array v4.[code]........

So my conclusion with that test is that with a typed reference you spend more time assigning a reference than manipulating a value from the reference With a not typed reference, the time spent is in manipulating the reference in the variable.Which one should i use or what should i do to have better performance with manipulating references from arrays?

Here are the files i used to test this:
reference.swf     //Online example
reference.zip     //Source file

loading external SWF's and its class files hanging around after the movie is unloaded....Its kind of tricky to explain, but you can see it very clearly in this file... http:[url]...Just run the main_stage.fla within flash [mx 04] and you'll see that if you click "Tester A" it will trace out "My Name is Tester A", then if you click on "Tester B" it will load a different swf, with a different class, but still trace out "My Name is Tester A" when it should be "My Name is Tester B"....

I have tried, unloading the swf's, removing the mc_Dropper and re-attaching it, re-declaring the variable testObj as null before declaring the class,

ActionScript 3.0 :: Declaring Variables In A Sub Class But Using Them In The Base Class Constructor?

Sep 20, 2009

I am creating a Weapon class for a game and the weapons itself will be the sub classes. The sub classes will hard code some values (such as max ammo and the weapon name).

I trying to access this declared data in the base class constructor, at the moment it's not outputting the values. Is this possible?

I've broken my Weapon class for simplicity:

ActionScript Code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;

[Code]....

My current workaround is creating a protected method in the base class to trace the information and calling that method in the sub class's constructor, this works fine but this doesn't seem like the most efficient technique?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Calling A Function From An Extended Class Inside A Top Level Class

Sep 23, 2009

package{

protected var _power:uint = 5; //Damage dealt

[Code].....

I`m instancing a Character and a Player in the Main Timeline, all in frame 1.
When I use: ""player.attack(character)"" it works fine by itself.

So I added the if (defender._hp <= 0) this.win() which gives me the following error:

1061: Call to a possibly undefined method win through a reference with static type Character.

"defender" is a Character instance, "this" is a Player instance and "win()" is a Player method. I try to call the Player method inside a Character method using the Player instance adding the "." and his method name

Do I really need to define the win() function in the Character class? Is there a bypass to use a subclass method in a parent class method if it`s called from an instance of the subclass?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Referencing A Textfield Inside A Movieclip Class From Document Class

Feb 3, 2009

Ok, this is one of those walls that I know once I can jump over it, I will be a much happier developer again.

I've done tons of reading, and think I have a firm understanding that the general consensus is that if you want to reference something, it needs to be added to the display list, using addChild().

I hate to be defiant, but what if I don't want to?

Or at the very least, what if I want to add a movieclip class to the stage using addChild, and then reference objects inside it?

It is much easier this way than what most people recommend - adding 15 objects via addChild, then setting the x and y for the, etc.

That said, I'm all about using classes and using as3 the way it was meant to be used. So what this is, is a best practices question I guess.

HERE ARE THE STEPS I'M TRYING:

- Create new flash document

- Draw graphic symbol bg, with text field over it, select them, convert to movieclip symbol, and export class name "box", then delete it from stage

- Add document class .as file, which simply adds that class "box" from the library, to the display list using a simple addChild()

- Set a name for that box using box.name = "test" let's say

- Do a simple trace like the following - "getChildByName('test').textFieldName" - it shows up great

- So then, I'll now try to set the text by doing this - getChildByName('test').textFieldName.text = "yo";

That last line above, is what doesn't work. I know I'm referencing wrong, but how would a pro as3 developer, reference something on the stage within a movieclip class, from the document class?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Dynamically Create Class Inside A Class?

Apr 19, 2010

This is what i'm trying to do :

I have 1 class that extends movieclip, let's call it Class0. I have 1 class that extends movieclip, let's call it Class1.

I create an instance of Class0 on stage like : var myClip0:Class0 = new Class0(this, "Class1");

The class Class0 when initializing, will create a new movieclip (myClip1) and add it as child, as an instance of Class1, like myClip0.myClip1. But it's when i create that clip, i want to tell it, it's an instance of Class1, like :

private var myClip1:Class1 = new Class1(this);

Where Class1 could be any class.

How do i pass Class1 to Class0 so it can create it dynamically?? Do i have to use the apply function??

inside Class0, i have a function that does :

Code:
if(subClass){
initSubclass(subClass);
}

Variables :: Initialization - "proper" Place To Initialize Class Variables?

Jun 23, 2010

Is it "better" to initialize AS3 class variables in the class constructor? Or can I just initialize them to their default value when I declare them at the top of my class? I ask because when there's a lot of class variables, it appears inefficient to declare them in one place and then initialize them in another when I could easily do both in the same place. It one option is better than the other,

ActionScript 3.0 :: Variables Inside Names Again?

ActionScript Code:
var myVar:Number = 1;
parent_mc['child'+myVar+'_mc'].alpha = 0.5;

What is the right syntax to use if child1_mc is not actually a child of anything and just sits on the stage? I have tried the following and it didn't work:

ActionScript Code:
['child'+myVar+'_mc'].alpha = 0.5;

and I tried:

ActionScript Code:
stage['child'+myVar+'_mc'].alpha = 0.5;

That didn't work either.
