It just doesn't seem to return the correct width and height of the string parameter. Documentation states that the function returns 6 properties; width, height, textFieldHeight, textFieldWidth, ascent, descent. textFieldWidth and textFieldHeight are supposed to return the exact height and width in pixels that is required to show the textfield obj. Problem is the text will still appear cropped. Of course the workaround is just to add a space in the string parameter, but this a quick and dirty fix.

I'm trying to convert a String into an Array of words. To do so I split the String when a space is met, and make a new Array containing only the words. The problem is when I try to get rid of any whitespace. The code works as intended for the whitespace between the words but ALWAYS fails to remove ONE whitespace if there are spaces at the start of my String.

As seen it accounts the last whitespace in front of my sentence as a word and doesn't remove from the Array.

I have a text field that a user can enter a value and right now they can enter "150.55" or "125.55555"
I want to limit the entry to a decimal with a scale of 1.
So they would be only be able to enter "150.5" or "125.5"
I have a var as an integer that I'm reading for the scale. Just not sure how to trim the string so I only display the shortened 150.5

I have a movie clip which has a function on it that loads some xml (actually xml that is created on the fly by php). The problem is that I have several different parameters - 3 in total which have to be tagged on to the URL so that the xml can display correctly.
I have no problem getting the first 2 parameters into the URL, but I cannot get the final one. On the _root I can trace it fine via another function however I can't get the parameter from the function that lies on the _root, into the URL that sits in another movie clip.
This is what I have for the code that sits in the movie clip:
//load vars for product info
var sendProduct_lv:LoadVars = new LoadVars();
var prodID:Number;

What I am trying to do is get the URL that is declared in the first function after xmlData.load to have page=2 or 3 or whatever page I hppen to be on when the function floadPopup is invoked.

I am trying to remove / replace white space from a string in as3. The string comes from xml and than written into text field. To compare the strings I am trying to remove white spaces
var xmlSentence:String=myXML.SENTENCE[thisSentence];
var tfSentence=e.target.text;
var rex:RegExp = /s+/;
trace(xmlSentence.replace(rex, "-"));
trace(tfSentence.replace(rex, "-"));
That code outputs like this:
She-has a dog
-She has a dog
I also tried different rex patterns. The problem is that though there are spaces in both string -which are same- it finds only one space but not the same one in both strings.

I neeed to insert spaces in front of capital letters in a string. the string contains the name of a country instance for example demRepublicOfCongo. I would like to scan the string and inset spaces before each capital letter so that the contents of the above string would become dem Republic Of Congo, for eaxmple.I found some code that It is posted below.

this seems like it should be simple but for some reason i can't figure out how to get the value of a variable out of a URL query string. if this is in my location bar: [URL] and i just want the value of "chosenCLIP" to use in my loaded SWF file, how do i do it in AS3?

I've got a problem with a function i'm using to dynamically move movieclips around - its like this at the mo:
function wjump(number) {
_root.content.aboutus.webwizard.targetY = startPos[number];
}
where startPos is an array with numbers.
I want it to be like this:
function jump(target, number) {
target.targetY = startPos[number];
}
so any clip can be moved as long as it has a targetY variable. But it won't work for some reason. Is there some sort of special syntax i should use like [] brackets? I tried this around the target in function body but it did not work.

I want to create a few buttons which users can choose from to change the XML file for my RSS Reader in Air for Android. This is what the button will need to update:

I am working on adding functionality to where the URL takes in a parameter as defined by an MVC style looking way.eg. (URL... )where 12345 is the corresponding Id number that I want to get.I have this functionality working.I am using Internet Explorer 7.My issue is that when a user attempts to enter a new query string id into the URL, the page doesn't refresh when the user hits enter or the refresh button. (The user can navigate to the url/#/Id/12345 only when opening a new window/tab)Does anyone know if this is a feature that doesn't work in Flex or if there is some code or configuration needed to allow this?

Can we skip an optional parameter and assign value to the parameter after the skipped one?
For example I have a function:
public function Dialog(message:String,title:String="Note",dialogsize:int=99):void

}
I can easily call the function with a message and a title:
Dialog("HELLO","Intro");
Is there a way to skip the title and just pass in the dialogsize? I've tried it but can't make it work:
Dialog("HELLO",,dialogsize);
Is it possible to skip some optional parameters without using (rest) parameter?

Forgive me for this stupid noob question but I want to call a function (loadList) that originally gets triggered after a mouseevent from another function (addToXML) that does not have an event.
The loadList function takes info from a XML var, sticks it into an array which then gets loaded into a tile list and that is working fine.
The addToXML function when called adds elements to the XML var after which I want to call the first function with the event parameter so it refreshes the items in the tile list.
I know it can do this by creating a new array and loading that into the tile list in the addToXML function, but it be much simpler to just recall the function.
I have tried things like

addToXML.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, loadList);
but all the event constants I have tried give me error messges like "1061: Call to a possibly undefined method addEventListener through a reference with static type Function."

I have a custom class being constructed from my main class. In the custom class it has another custom class that is passed in as a parameter. I would like to strictly type the parameter variable but when I do, 'the type is not a compile type constant etc'.This, I understand, is because the custom class used as a parameter has not yet been constructed.It all works when I use the variable type ( * ) to type the parameter.I suspect this is a design flaw, in that I am using an incorrect design pattern.It is actually hand-me-down code, having received a large project from someone else who is not entirely familiar with oop concepts and design patterns.
I have considered using a dummy constructor for the parametered class in my main class but the passed in class also takes a custom class (itself with a parametered constructor). I am considering using ... (rest) so that the custom classes' parameters are optional.Is there any other way to control the order of construction of classes? In Actionscript and Adobe Flex, I'm using a pattern and regexp (with the global flag) with the string.match method and it works how I'd like except when the match returns multiple occurrences of the same word in the text. In that case, all the matches for that word point only to the index for the first occurrence of that word. For example, if the text is "cat dog cat cat cow" and the pattern is a search for cat*, the match method returns an array of three occurrences of "cat", however, they all point to only the index of the first occurrence of cat when i use indexOf on a loop through the array. I'm assuming this is just how the string.match method is. I want to find the specific indices of every occurrence of a match, even if it is of a word that was already previously matched.

But I keep getting an "Error #2030: End of file was encountered." This is (probably) because the class I'm serializing is too big for the "String" object type in AS3. Is there a limitless object for storing an array of characters (or better yet binary), or am I going to have to make my own class? (like one with an array of strings)

I have a String variable in my flex (flash builder 4) application containing CSV data. I need to allow the user to download this data to a local file. For example, giving them a "csv" button to click and it might present them with a save file dialog (and I would be sending the contents of my string variable).Is this possible / how ?I am using the ResuableFX component for the datagrid to csv. This the code I ended up with that works to save the string to a text file for the user (in a web browser):
