ActionScript 2.0 :: Adjust The Kerning Of Dynamic Text?
Jul 14, 2004Is it possible to adjust the kerning of dynamic text?

View 7 RepliesWhat I'm doing is that I want to create textfields using flash and insert them into my HTML portfolio site.The reason I'm doing this is to be able to use special fonts, kern the text properly and customize the anti-aliasing. I tried with CSS but I don't have enough control using that (regarding kerning and anti-aliasing).I have created a Flash file that can load specific .txt files into the textfield of the SWF (so that the text becomes formatted), using FlashVars. I discovered that kerning in Flash doesn't apply to dynamic textfields unless you set it using actionscript. So I've tried to use the following code on my textfield:
---
var myFormat:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
myFormat.letterSpacing = 3;
[code]......
i cant seem to control the spacing in this dynamic text field using leading.[code]
View 1 RepliesI'm building a dynamic menu and am struggling to give the same distance to the text fields with different widths. When I turn on the "autoSize TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT" some text fields are overlapped, and, aligned when I turn off, but, they all get the same size (100px by default - dont know why), which makes the distance between them unequal.
Here is the code:
Actionscript Code:
// main timeline objectvar index:Object=this;// New Xml Objectvar fileXml:XML;// check how many menu items we have.var totalMenuItems:Number;// Main Menu Propertiesvar spacing:int=5;var menuItem_txt:TextField;// New URL Requestvar xmlLoader:URLLoader=new URLLoader(new

I'm having an issue with a particular font where, when using dynamic textFields the kerning is all out of whack. When using static textFields, it's fine, and when I check "Use Device Fonts" it's also fine, but when using dynamic textFields with embedded fonts, everything is jacked. The font is Blender Pro Bold. Regular and Heavy work fine, but for some reason Bold is messed up. Is it just that there is a problem with the font?
View 1 Repliesi was hoping that someone might have an answer to my question. is there ANY way to dynamically change the kerning of an input box? i'd like to give users the ability to modify the kerning of my .swf file. i know flash allows you to change properties like font size, colour, alignment, etc., but i can't find a way to change the kerning property. i don't even think one exists for them. so is there any kind of work around to this?also, is there any reason why i can't use negative values for leading for the input box? it only allows me to use positive numbers when i try to change it dynamically.
View 1 RepliesI have a textfield 300 width x 300 heigth in the instance.after i loaded the xml into this textfield (xml_txt) , all the content stays within this txtfield. so if i select the text i scroll down..but i dont want this..
is it possible to, after loaded the xml, to adjust the heigth of the textfield to fit in the text, so i dont need to scroll it.?
I tried the line spacing button, but even setting it at 0 does not get the leading small enough.
View 1 RepliesI've followed the tutorial on here on how load text from an XML file into a dynamic text box. I'd like to also automatically adjust the height of my text box based on the imported XML text
function loadXML(loaded) {
if (loaded) {
_root.header = this.firstChild.childNodes[2].childNodes[0].childNodes[0].firstChild.nodeValue;
_root.content1 = this.firstChild.childNodes[2].childNodes[0].childNodes[1].firstChild.nodeValue;
header.text = _root.header;
[code]....
I'm trying to dynamically create a static text field on the stage, but I want it to automatically shrink to the smallest height possible, much like a static text box dragged created using the Text Tool.
Here's my code at current:
Code:
_root.createTextField("text_box"+i,i,10,10,530,100);
_root["text_box"+i].type = "static";
_root["text_box"+i].text = text_arr[i];
[Code]....
I was wondering if anyone knows a good strategy to adjust a text box to fit text.[code]...
View 4 RepliesI'm trying to create the following component: Just for information, the blank space will contain a text control, and I'm creating a component that represents the black corner with the (i) icon and the "promotion" text. The part I'm having issues with is this component representing the black corner with the diagonal text. The text has to be able to hold 2 lines. And the black corner has to be able to adjust to the text's size. What's more, the text has a rotation... I'm having some doubts on how to do this:
Should I have different controls for each text line? Should I draw the text in the shape (after doing the rotation) or should I just overlap both components? [When I talk about drawing the text in the shape, I mean in the same way as asked in this question] Is there any way to get the proper size of the triangle shape without doing some extravagant calculations?

I just read the textFormat.kerning description and the wording puzzled me.Kerning adjusts the pixels between certain character pairs to improve readability, and should be used only when necessary, such as with headings in large fonts.Why should i only be used when necessary, if it improves readability of text?

Code:
this.createTextField("myText",this.getNextHighestDepth(),23,72,300,400);
//bgPic._alpha = 25;
var titleS:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
titleS.font = "TradeGothic";

I'm using a font that has a kerning table with a TextField object to display text. However, it appears the kerning table is never being used.[code]I figured kerning=true would force the text field to abide by the font's kerning table. If I use the same font with the new Flash text rendering engine it seems to respect the kerning tables as expected, but at this point we can't switch to the new rendering engine.
View 0 RepliesIs it possible to add kerning (letterspacing) in-between the numbers in a date counter?
For example lets say I have a date counter that counts the dates of a month (1,2,3,etc...) and I have two circles sitting side by side not overlapping. How would i go about adding a space in-between the numbers to have the number on the left in the left circle and the number on the right in the right circle? I believe it requires strings but I don't know enough to be able to code something like this at the moment.[code]...

var width:int = 20
while (textField.defaultTextFormat.size > 1 && textField.width > width) {

As far as I know theres in no way to cahnge the alpha of a dynamic text box. I put one in a movie clip and when i try to change the alpha of it everything else in it changes its alpha but the not the DT box. Could someone plz verify for me that u can't change alpha and help me find a component that allows alpha control with a dynamic text box. thx in advance.
View 5 RepliesI'm relatively new to Actionscript, in fact, I just figured out today how to load text from an external source. I have another issue that I'm not sure how to handle. I have buttons for my main nav, a main text box, and a mini text box (both text boxes are loaded dynamically from external files). I want to have the mini text box load new external text files in the main text box. For instance, I have a button for music, which loads a list of songs in the mini text box. I want to be able to click on the name of one of the songs and have it load the lyrics in the main text box. I'm sure it's simple, I'm just new.

View 3 RepliesProblem: I am trying to get a very simple text resize going, for my main content area in a flash website. My aim is to get a button, that on click, increases the text size of a dynamic text field.

This is what I tried, I am very new to Action Script, so excuse the futility of my code.
If you take a look at my flash movie you will see that I have draggable movie clips, which contain dynamic text fields. These text fields contain text drawn in from a simple xml document. The problem I have is that the text in the text fields is hedged right next to the border of the autosized text box. This makes them look untidy and in the worst case difficult to read. I wonder how I can add some margin to the left and right of the text to fill in some space.The code which formats the text boxes is:
with (main["dragAct"+i].dragActText) {
text = actText[i+1];
background = true;

I have 4 dynamic text boxes which duplicates the text from a main input text box. How do I write a code to make visible only the dynamic text box I want when clicked it's check box.What is the CODE to make each "DYNAMIC TEXTBOX" visible when clicked on it's checkbox?
View 6 RepliesI have a dynamic text on the stage which gets updated (shows numbers) when some buttons are pressed.I just need to know if it is possible to show the first dynamic textfield in another dynamic textfield.Lets say the first dynamic textfield called "price" and the second one called "price2". when a button is pressed, the first dynamic textfield "price" will show a number. is it possible to show whatever is shown in the "price" in "price2" ?
View 1 RepliesI'm creating an XML-driven pie chart in AS3 with 2 text boxes in each pie slice. Both text fields are dynamic in the sense that they are populated by the XML doc and then told where to place themselves in the AS3. I've got them both using the same x and y position to place themselves at the moment (which of course puts them right one top of each other), but I'd like to make one of the fields (which acts like a label or a title to the larger number and % text field) place itself in a particular spot around the other text field. The result I'm looking for is to have the smaller "title" text field appear approximately 5 pixels above and left-justified to the larger "percentage" field.
Anyway, here are two sections of code that I've currently got. The first chunk, for the Tags portion, sets the position for the "percentage" text field using a good old x and y method. The second chunk, for Titles, is setting the position for the smaller "title" text.
//evaluate tags
private function evaluateTags():void{
for (s=0; s

I have 2 input textfields on the stage and 1 dynamic textfield.
-input1 is for quantity
-input2 is for page count
When a user enters a number into the page count it makes a calculation and places the outcome into the dynamic textfield. This textfield is for the individual price.All of this so far works. What I want to do now is create another dynamic textfield for the total. So the individual price is multiplied by the quantity and this result is put in the new dynamic text field. I have the code for that working but here is where it gets tricky (for me anyway).The total price is to start off invisible. When I roll over the individual price the total price is to appear (For a test lets just say when I roll over an area the total price appears).To stop cursor flickering this should be done inside a movieclip. So... I have create a movieclip and placed a dynamic textfield inside it. They all have instance names BUT how do I reference it in script?I need to tell the resulting calculation to be placed inside the textfield which is inside the movieclip. If it isn't inside a movie clip I can do it. But how to I reference it when inside one?
