ActionScript 2.0 :: Controlling A Movieclip's Internal Timeline W/ X+y?

Im really struggling with controlling a movieclip (frame-by-frame images w/ stop(); actions) by using the mouses horizontal position on the main stage. So basically I want to turn my stage into a showreel of images. Lets say the stage is 50 pixels; i would want some kind of code that would divide up the total length of my m/cs timeline, in order to show the first frame of the m/c when the y-axis is at 0, the last keyframe of the m/c when the y-axis = 500.
I have tried to use rollover commands on (miniscule) hit states covering the entire stage, but there must be a better way ( i plan on updating the images m/c a lot) ie. a lovely big chunk of confusing code?

I have buttons that load movie clips when you mouse over them and unload the movie clips when you mouse out.[code]the problem is that the movie clips aren't necessarily playing from the beginning when you mouse over, since their timeline is independent.How can i specify that I want to add the instance of the movie clip to play from frame 1.I've tried using the gotoAndPlay method with the frame number/ label in parenthesis afterwards and got an error message..I've looked through multiple tutorials on controlling symbols using AS, and i still can't get this to 'click' for me.[code]

I've just swiched over from FL8 to FL CS4 (3 days ago). I'm learning AS3 at the moment but am on a deadline with a project (a bit over it actualy) which uses AS3
I have a movieclip (container_mc) on the main timeline which holds all the animation and a timer (timer1_mc).When container_mc reaches frame 2 it stops and a timer (timer1_mc) starts running.When the timer finishes, container_mc should continue to the next frame.The code I have to do that (from the timer1_mc) is:

This doesn't work, it gives me the error 1119: Access of possibly undefined property container_mc through a reference with static type flash.display:DisplayObjectContainer.

My stage is empty except for an MC with a simple animation and an AS 2 layer. There is not a button or user interaction that engages the MC. I want the MC to play when the timeline reaches the frame with the AS. My MC has an instance name of 'blueMC' and here's the AS I've tried:
blueMC.play();
_root.blueMC.gotoAndPlay("2");
on(load){
blueMC.play();
} onClipEvent(load) {
blueMC.gotoAndPlay("2");

Shouldn't it just be this?:
MCinstanceNmae.gotoAndPlay("Frame# or label");

Im trying to produce my online portfolio but for that i need to play movieclips backward and forward to various frame numbers.I found a very good script (as2) and it works great in the main timeline but inside a mc it doesnt work at all. this is the script

This code is currently contained within my "mc_1" movieclip. I want to be able to have this code on my main timeline, however no matter what I try I constantly get errors, multiple different versions. I've tried adding mc_1 infront of everything, but that just gives an output error about a Sprite.Also, I'm currently using visible to control whether the back image to the textbox should show - What I'd really like to do is control it using a child, but they're movieclips not buttons, so when I try to addChild within the function it errors saying I'm trying to control a movieclip within a simplebutton function.

This is my first time coding a website using ActionScript. So far everything has went very well, I designed the website in Photoshop, and imported to Flash CS5. Then I cleaned everything up, and started adding navigation to the various pages using buttons.The website is constructed in a very simple manner, there are five main pages and they are connected by buttons on a static navigation bar (the first page, home, doesn't have a corresponding button). Then there are nine sub pages, that each contain information on a character of the game, and are connected to corresponding buttons in the 'Character' layer/MovieClip. My four menu buttons (Story, The World, Characters, Extras) all navigate correctly without problems.
The problem arises because inside my Characters page (a movie clip) are nine buttons, each linking to a different page. These buttons should bring the timeline to the frame specified, but when the buttons are clicked nothing happens. I've spent hours searching for a solution to this, but with no avail, and I have a feeling the answer is prettysimple.gotoAndStop("gowang", "Scene 1");line in the Gowang character button function with:MovieClip(root).gotoAndStop("gowang");

I am building a website in as3. As of now this is what I have. My main file has a button on it and builds a movieclip to hold loaded movieclips.
The file runs and loads about.swf into the main file. When the button is pressed it tells about.swf to play the exit animation.
All of that is working. What I want to happen now is once the exit animation finishes I want the about.swf file to tell the main timeline to load a new movie.
I can control loaded movieclips from the main timeline I just do not know how to control the main timeline from loaded movieclips.

I've reworking a client's site, so I'm somewhat limited on the changes I can make to the overall structure -BUT - here's my quandry: I have a nav system that is on the _root level - the main content of the site exists in one large MC that sits underneath the nav, and moves to different target positions when the nav is clicked (within THIS mc are individual MC's that house the content for each individual page)So the nav doesn't change positions on the timeline at all - once it loads in, it stays constant on one frame, while the main_mc moves positions underneath I need to make the nav change color when that page is activated (when the main_mc moves into certain target positions), and I can't figure out how to communicate w/ it from within these embedded mc's.

CacheAsBitmap stores a raster copy of a movieclip in memory to use. If that movieclip is rotated or scaled, the performance gain is lost as it must re-cache the new movieclip. I assume this also applies to a movieclip that has a constantly repeating internal timeline, even if that movieclip isn't rotating or being scaled. However, do additional frames (that aren't being used) affect this?I have a 'player' movieclip. This movieclip consists of about ten frames, each its own animation. Idle stance, walking, jumping, all the standard stuff. THe movieclip remains stopped on frame 1 (idle stance) for most of the game. Right now the Idle stance is an animation, so to use cacheAsBitmap I need to stop the idle animation. That's fine, but does the additional content in the movieclip interfere with this? If I go from a walking animation back to the idle stance will it re-cache the idle stance for me?
The main reason I ask is that I wasn't able to notice much of a performance difference between either method. Cacheasbitmap on a player sprite with animated idle stance, and Cacheasbitmap on a player sprite with a static idle stance. Both resulted in 39 fps (set to 40) in the flash player. Which is good I suppose, but I don't know how the results will vary for someone with a slow computerThis is an important area of the game because at any given time there could be up to 12 player sprites on the screen (all with filters attached to them). So if one player is moving left/right the other 11 must be re-translated on each frame (since the stage moves too) so if all 11 players are playing their idle animations, with a glow filter, WHILE flash tries to re-cache all of them, that could lead to performance issues (although it hasn't yet for me)I want to give players the option to disable the idle animation, I just hope that it's actually working the way I intend. If cacheasbitmap fails because of any other content inside the movieclip then this would be a useless feature.

I have movieclip that act as a container for a short animation. This animation has a script that repeat the movements until it's greater than a variable. But I wonder if it's possible to use this movieclip on several places on the timeline and have a several variables with different max number of movements that control the script inside the movieclip container? I have tested, but it seems like the value from the variable at the main timeline don't reach the script in the container!?

Not sure if I'm in the right place, I apologize in advance if so. I'm somewhat proficient with html, but fairly new to flash, using cs4pro, as3. Here's my dilemma. Converting an existing html/css site to flash. Flash is main site now but a few html pages are still linked, a buy page and a form page, a few others. I can get the all the external html pages to link to a frame in the flash movie, and I can get the flash to link with all external urls.
My problem comes when I move to a frame outside the main timeline. The movie is lets say 393 frames. All symbols/content are on seperate layers, and so is the action. Once the full movie ends, I have several frames past that where I have basically created frames for additional "pages" and created anchors for those frames, new layes for content, new layers for anchor (labeled) and new layers for a stop(); on each frame, I extended the pertinant graphic frames out to 410 from the original movie.
Now when the movies runs the buttons appear at about frame 115, so in the action layer I coded a keyframe and then added frames of it out to frame 410 or so: I have attached the .fla Now I'm lost here. When you navigate the site, from home lets say to an external link (button) like members, the html member page opens, and if you click home button, back to flash frame, and all works, all buttons, on the home frame 393. But if you go to any of the external htmls, and then go back to any other frame like frame 401 the about page, and all the rest 402 403, etc, the page appears properly, but then none of the links function. the site URL is [URL]there is a flash intro too, swf in question is actually at[URL]

if its possible to control a movieclips timeline a bit more than the simple play, stop functions.
I was hoping by pressing a button, it would make the MC's playhead not just jump to frame 20, but play to it.
So if the movieclip's timeline is on frame 60, I press a button and it scrubs all the way back to frame 20. Click another button and it scrubs to frame 40, etc..

I have a MC in my movie. I want to control it's properties in different frames in the main timeline. For instance
at the 1. frame change it's position
at frame 50 change it's alpha
at frame 100 change it's scale
until now I have done all this by motion tweening but I know AS is the best way.

is there anyway to access the internal bitmap representation of a movieclip that has its cacheasbitmap property set to true?It would be nice if I could create vector artwork that scaled to the size of the browser and then obtain a bitmap representation of it so that I could then manipulate it on a per pixel basis for some cool visual fx.

i have forward/back buttons to control the timeline. what happens in the following code is that if the button is clicked while in the < or > range of frames, it gets buggy. heres the code.

this doesnt seem to go to the exact frame i need if i click while the current sample is still animating in. It would be much better if i could tell flash to a specific frame instead of asking flash to determine a range. that way, if a button is pressed during an animation it wont just advance one frame, it would jump to a specific frame.
I wish i could just do this:

i thought about creating a var that would be a string. i could then add a number to the name of that string each time the button is clicked. then i could make frame labels the name of the string. but i couldnt get my head around it. also, i didnt know how to make the button stop adding to the string name once it reach a certain value (6 in this case). or how to make it play the last sample animation if the user kept clicking the advance button at the end of the samples.

This time I'm attempting to make a timeline, that should control what frame of a movie clip on the root timeline is displayed. So relevant to where the user slides the slider bar, the appropriate information will be displayed inside that movie clip. Now I really have NO idea where to start the coding that will attempt to convert the slider's location on its on slider bar, to what frame is shown on that movieclip.

I have a huge timeline with photos, each photo on a different frame, and several buttons, one for each picture on the first frame. My idea is to make a unique action for the buttons that tells the timeline to go to the frame number that is the same as the button instance name.
