ActionScript 2.0 :: Convert A Live Stream Into A Flash Format To Save On Bandwidth?
Oct 3, 2002
Is it posible to convert a live stream into a flash format to save on bandwidth? If so, what player could be adapted to use it, and how could I convert it to begin with? If not, what is the best format to use for a live stream to get good quality without using too much bandwidth?

I have confirmed this behavior in FMS 3.0.2 on Windows 2003, Vista, and Linux.
In prior versions of FMS if I had a publisher sending a live video feed to the server, then I could have subscribers connect to the server and set a bandwidth limit for them and the server would ensure that the subscribers only got as much bandwidth as I set for them. As of version 3, the server now ignores this limiting for live streams.
You can set a limit on the publisher which of course then limits the live stream that subscribers view, but that is not what I want. I want to have the publisher push a live stream at the quality I specify and then I need a way to give some subscribers a lower bandwidth version of that stream. This all worked fine in prior versions of FMS and I can't imagine this is intended behavior in version 3, but it seems like a major oversight.
The bug can be replicated by creating a simple flash app to stream live video to the server and then in a separate NetConnection, subscribe to that live stream and display it. Then on the server side, setup an application.onConnect to do a setBandwidthLimit on the subscriber and you can see that it is totally ignored. You get the full bandwidth stream even though the limit should be reduced for the subscriber.

Does anyone know how to get a script of some kind to grab a picture from a live stream and save it as a JPG file?
In this way a cron job can tricker the script and thereby grab a picture fx every 10'th minute and the picture can be shown on a website so people that are not attending can have a look into what is happening in the live stream.

I'm looking for a solution where clients watch a live stream video and can record part of this stream while watching and save this recording to disk. I can think of several solutions but not sure if any of them is possible:
- The selected part is recorded locally and saved through FileRefence.
- The selected part is recorded with FMS though a second NetStream and saved with a unique ID. The user can retrieve the recorded video by download.
- Start-time and end-time of the recording are send to the server where some script extracts the requested video from the live stream recording file and return it as a download.

I build a client side application where is only a FLVPlayback2.5 component and a short AS3 script.
[Code]....
My Encoder is setup with three streams: Vid: 500 kbps - Audio: 48 kbpsVid: 800 kbps - Audio: 48 kbpsVid: 1500 kbps - Audio: 48 kbps I start the encoder and everything looks fine in the log. In my browser (Safari or Firefox) I go to my html site and the stream starts after 6-8 sec. But anytime with the lowest bitrate 548 kbps and nothing look like the stream is switching to another bitrate. I tried it with the smil playlist and the result is the same. Only the lowest bitrate is plublished.

I'm having a problem with recording a live webcam stream. The last few seconds of the stream is getting cut off.
The recording is stopped with the following piece of code:
vid.attachCamera(null);
vid.clear();
ns.attachCamera(null);
ns.attachAudio(null);
ns.pause();
What could be causing this? Is the stream cut off too soon? Is the client unable to send buffered data to the server?

I'm trying to stream a HDS live multi-bit stream, it seems to push to the FMS but my player doesn't display the stream.Are these settings and files correct? The documenation is confusing on what and which files need to be edited and/or created.
Encoder settings:
Bit Rate: 150,500,700
FMS URL: rtmp://myserver/livepkgr
Stream: liveevent%i?adbe-live-event?liveevent
FMS 4.5
I see the following directories being created when I start encoding and each directory has a single file with a .stream extension in them. Are these correct? fC:FMS-HOMEapplicationslivepkgrevents\_definst_liveevent1[code].....

We have an application that is using FMS to share slides (swf,jpg, etc) with another client. We added a video as an option. We would like to verify as often as possible the bandwidth quality between communications in order to suggest the user to close video if we notice bandwidth is not optimal.
We've been experimenting doing a bandwidth detection every 60 seconds, but I am wondering if there are specific guidelines to do this for live video, like how many times one should verify bandwidth? Is it ok to take one reading or should we take a few readings and then average out?

Is there a way for flash to detect a user's bandwidth, and depending the size of bandwidth, stop loading, or continue with the load? Now that I'm thinking about it, this would probably be a javascript detection script and if the bandwidth is high, load .swf, if not load a .jpg?

I would like to serve high quality video (H.264) between a server and a single Flash Player client with low latency (RTMFP). The single client will be controlling a robotic device and seeing the results through the video stream, so low latency is important.
Option A: The Flash Player supports low latency streaming of video between two P2P nodes via the RTMFP protocol in Flash Player 10. It uses the Spark codec to encode the video and as far as I know it is not possible to encode using any other codec in the player.
Option B: Flash Media Live Encoder does support live encoding using other codecs (On2 and H.264) but cannot act as an RTMFP peer - this option would require Flash Media Server in the middle.It seems I cannot stream video to a single client over RTMFP with anything other than Spark.

Live streaming and a buffer on a NetStream do not mix. Why? The docs don't say you can't do this.The playback gets hosed. Buffer is supposed to fill to what you set it to before playing. Instead though, about half the time, the player starts playing right away and disregards the buffer time you've set. Then you get caught in short buffering and rebuffering cycles that degrades the playback experience.
Give it a shot yourself. Here is the simplest of live streaming video players. No frills. Just connect it to your live stream by changing the defaultURL string and stream name in the ns.play() statement.
Run it in Flex debug mode. It will check and print the ns.bufferLength property every second. The buffer is set to 20 secs currently. Last time I ran it, I never made it above 2 seconds in the buffer. Player started playing right away instead of buffering the full 20 secs first. Sometimes you get to the full 20 and sometimes not.

What's the best way to check whether there is video data (or not) in a live RTMP stream? For example, if a broadcast terminates, can I auto-detect that condition, to perform some sort of "thank you for watching" behavior?Also, how can I know if a visitor somehow gets disconnected from the Internet during the broadcast? (So I can notify the visitor of the problem, and give instruction.)

For a client, i need to write a complex application used to stream tv episodes in flash format, at least, the player will be in flash. It's a first for me, and i've a lot of question, since i don't really know about streaming.But well, first, here is the constraints :
Mac server (might be migrated to linux)
PHP5
Flash
external library could be used with PHP
What i need to do at first, is to write some app (php, python, shell), or find one to convert over 500 quicktime videos to be able to be read within a flash player.Then, i'll a back office, to add videos with meta data (the meta data will be simple html inputs), and, here is an important part of the project, the ability to generate chapters for each video (manually), the client will choose the start of a chapter, give it a name.
My questions : Is there any flash player able to do that ? or will i have to use 'playlist' such as youtube to simulate chapters ? Will it be easy to use the quicktime video within a flash player ?

Since Flash 5.5 by default saves files in 5.5 format that's incompatible in 5.0 editors we need a way to save .fla files in older format with a JSFL script. Can this be done? How?
Background: One of our developers installed the Flash IDE 5.5 and ran a modifying script on hundreds of fla files that we have. The changes were ok, but the file save format was not. It automatically saved the 5.0 files in 5.5 format that can not be opened on the 5.0 IDEs.
We could restore files from backups or he could go trough each file manually saving them with the save as dialog. I'd prefer to find a way to batch save .fla files in older formats like Flash IDE 5.0. JSFL would look close to optimal, but I could not find a way to save the files with specific flash version in mind with it.

In order to play a FMS stream (live or on demand), either an FLVPlayback component or the Video class is needed.And they require ActionScript 3 and Flash 8 or above.
As far as i know , Youtube, Dailymotion and Google Video stream their on demand videos from a FMS, and their players are compatible with Flash 7.
How can they achieve this? If Youtube, Google and Dailymotion do that, i deduce it's possible..
I tried to create a Flash 7 application that plays a video coming from FMS, using a MediaDisplay component, but it doesn't work well. Sometimes it shows the video, sometimes not.So i don't think youtube player uses MediaDisplay..
