I'm loading data from an xml file. Anything loaded from it is a string. Later, I want to be able to do some maths, say: aBetterNumber = xmlLoadedVar + aNumber; aBetterNumber just turns out to be the two variables concatinated together.

I've made a little game in Flash, and I want it to have an online leaderboard. But after looking into it, it seems it's complicated saving a simple .txt file because of security, and the tutorials I have tried to use, using PHP to do it, have not worked, not even the excercise files. So I was wondering if anyone have either a working tutorial or code to save a simple string in a txt file, or know another way of saving data remotely?
View 13 RepliesI am attempting to get data from an xml file load in flash. I followed a tutorial in a new fla and it seemed to work fine, I then tried to adapt it to my own needs which worked fine. But then when trying to implement this into my news section it doesn't seem to work. I am trying to make a news section, that displays the date and news article. This is in within a movie clip, I even tried putting it in the timeline of the scene but still nothing.
- I have 2 dynamic text boxes, date_txt and news_txt
- The xml file is named news.xml,
- both the fla and the xml are in the same folder

I need a AS that will load n number of variables from a txt file, which will have string values assign to them, and then in fla, it will fade in - wait - fade out in a dynamic textbox all of them one by one, and at the end it will loop it. I know how to do certain parts of this code, but I am not really good with array's yet.
View 12 RepliesI'm using Flash CS3 Actionscript 2. I'm loading an external file (it used to be an XML file but now it is an aspx file). Anyway, my actionscript for loading the file looks like this:
xmlFile = "flash/info.aspx?id=1"
Which works great with the aspx file I've created. But I need the "id=1" to append a dynamic number instead of the "1".

Now, i have to implement some equality controls on these variables, and since i don't know in that moment which type are them of, i'm converting all of them to Numbers (i don't need and neither want to compare strings) via the Number() function which accepts either Numbers or Strings as an input. View 4 RepliesI am creating an arithmetic quiz that pulls random math questions from an XML file. I am using two SWFs - the random questions are determined in one SWF that is done in Actionscript 2; the quiz itself is done in Actionscript 3. I am using a component called Actionscript Bridge, which accesses the questions from the AS2 SWF and loads them into the AS3 SWF. My AS3 successfully loads the questions on the first run, but if I click on a button to go back to the first frame in the AS3 SWF to re-take the quiz, the questions do not load. I am almost certain the solution is something simple, but I just can't figure out how to get the questions to load on subsequent runs of the quiz.

In my Flash application, the SWF file is located on a serverand is downloaded to clients in a controlled network. I want to beable to load XML data located on the client machines into the SWFfile. It looks like security settings is not allowing thi tohappen, as the local files are treated as a separate sandbox.If I were to use System.security.allowDomain, how do Ipecify local files? It's not a domain or URL. Or is there another way to do this? I'm wading through thesecurity information, but I haven't found the solution yet.

I did a test where I was able to load in data to a text field in flash from an xml file. This field will eventually be a scrolling text box. How would I make some of the text in the XML file interactive (meaning you could click on it and cause something to happen in the flash) - for example popping up a graphic on the screen. I don't want it to be an external link (URL) and since the text scrolls, there is no way to know where it will be on the screen when the user clicks on it so I can't create an invisible button.

The issue is loading data from an XML file and having it present in a Flash website. Its a 'book review' thing (i've altered the XML and AS3 for posting here, so the XML looks a little like this:

We have implemented a Flash photo slideshow on our site and it works just fine for most of our users. Whenever the xml.load(success) returns false I have the Flash email me a debug report. For the life of me I can not find a common thread between all of these people having problems with the Flash. I don't think it's a cross-domain issue because it works for most people, and I have the crossdomain.xml files where they should be.

One the first run I may get some output in ABC.txt like this

How can I save data to a text file and also append a record to data in an existing text file? I've used Authowrware previously and it was quite easy to create a large string of data (a comma separated list) and export that to a text file (and create the text file if it didn't already exist). I could then easily append additional rows of data (records) to the text file. We want to build a questionnaire that will store the data locally on the computer in a text file. Each record may have a few hundred data points in a comma separated list.

The string (score0.text) will have an "s" at the end as the time is counted in seconds and tenths, so I will be receiving something along the lines of "8.1s" as a value.. I would like to take score0.text, remove the "s" then *1000 the amount as a number before use..

View 1 RepliesIm looking to be able to find a number (any number) within a text string, what i ultimately want to do is crop the number out of the string to just be left with a number value, the only problem is the string could be any length and the number doesnt necessarily start at any point from the last characterI have items on the stage named 'image0', 'textfield2', 'button500' etc, as you can see the prefix before the number isnt a fixed length so I couldnt use substr and set an index, and since the number could be any number i couldnt set the index as a certain value before the end of the string. (ie it might return '500' or 'ld2' or 'ge0' in the examples given before)
