View 11 RepliesI was wondering how do you access the stage property from a different class that's not the principal class tied to the fla? Essentially, I have main.as which calls another class menu.as, and I can't seem to be able to use the stage.stageWidth property from menu.as. What's the proper way to be able to use the stage property from any class? Do I have to import it separately each time?
View 2 RepliesI m trying to access stage.width property but sometimes it trace 650 and 720 but i see my flash file dimension is 500x400, I need to align objects on stage..
View 1 RepliesHow can I access objects and modify their property that is ALREADY placed on the stage using external classes (AS file)? I 'm a newbie of AS3 and followed some tutorials about AS3 not long ago. For I learned scripting in AS3 can be done using AS file rather than script on Timeline. But I have a question. How can I "find" and "modify"the objects on the stage, or inside a MovieClip , in AS3?
For example, I have a file call Stage004.fla which have no document class linkage. I place the MovieClip "StageMain" which links the Stage004.as on the stage. StageMain has a textfield in it named "textFieldStage001". The Stage004.as is ran using "Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE" since StageMain is on the stage. I create another AS file WindowRename , to test can I modify the text in "textFieldStage001".
Then the famous error #1109 occurred.
"1119: Access of possibly undefined property textFieldStage001 through a reference with static type Class."
ActionScript Code:
package {
import flash.display.Stage;
import flash.events.Event;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.display.MovieClip;
public class Stage004 extends MovieClip{
[Code] .....
I have a document class that is connected to a swf but for some reason I can't access the stage/root property. I can access all instance names that are on stage but trying to access stage will return "null". What's up?
View 5 RepliesI'm having some trouble implementing a "virtual" camera for use in game development with Flash CS4 ActionScript 3.0.Basically, what I'm trying to accomplish is to have a camera that moves about the main stage so that my character can traverse the level which is much larger in size than the stage itself.I've been using Sham Bhangal's virtual camera script, and when I implemented it by sticking the code into the first frame of a movie clip, it worked great!
From there, I moved the code into a document class that i could instantiate and then drop onto the stage as a child.Finally, I wanted to have a main "builder" document class that would be added to the main stage as a child, and within THIS class I wanted an instance of the virtual camera. This is where I hit some obstacles.how to properly instantiate the virtual camera within the builder class which is then added to the main stage. I have a Stage reference that is being passed to the main builder, but I don't know where to go from here. To what do I add the virtual camera to as a child? To the Stage reference in the main builder class? To the main builder class itself?The main issue is that when I export my movie with the virtual camera added as a child to the Stage reference within the main builder class, it complains that I'm not allowed to access certain values.
Code: Error: Error #2071: The Stage class does not implement this property or method.
at Error$/throwError()
at flash.display::Stage/set x()
This happens when I try to access parent.x from within the virtual camera class. I assume this fails because "parent" from this perspective is the main builder class, but using the Stage reference produces this same error.I am, of course, willing to provide more detail if something I've written is confusing, and I will gladly provide a detailed fix for those seeking to use a similar solution in the future.
So I've been trying to move the stage's X and Y position and keep on getting this error:
Code:
Error: Error #2071: The Stage class does not implement this property or method.
at Error$/throwError()
at flash.display::Stage/set y()
at Main/scroll()
I am using a document class, here it is:
Code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.Event;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
[code]....
As for why I'm trying to move the stage, I have a movieclip which moves according to keyboard input and i want the stage/Background to always center on him.
Lately i discovered MATE (for Flex development) and was wondering: how do i bind a property in a view (actually a navigatorcontent component) to another property in a class so that they stay in synchronization (meaning that whenever the property in the class changes the property in the view also changes).
So if we have a view called Target.mxml and a property targertProp how do we bind it to the class called SourceClass with property SourceProp?
I have a class called shapeC that only creates a rectangle and then addChild(rectangle);. That class is instantiated on the main timeline. Currently, the only way you can see that rectangle is to add the instantiated class to the stage via addChild(shapeC);. My question is, is there a way that the shapeC class can add the rectangle to the root stage without requireing the instantiated class to be added to the stage?
View 4 RepliesIf I have three classes:
public class Example {
public function Example () {
}[code]............
You can see that the two last classes extend the first one, and both have the 'variable' property. In case that I have an instance of Example and I am sure it is also an ExtendedExample OR AnotherExtendedExample instance, is there some way to access the 'variable' property? Something like
function functionThatReceivesAnExtendedExample (ex:Example):void {
if(some condition that I may need) {
ex.func()
I have the following inheritance structure:
var environment:AvEnvironment = new AvEnvironment(...);
addChild(environment);
environment.addChild(new Terrain());
environment.addChild(new Player());
I am trying to access a public property from AvEniroments class through the Player class, however I'm getting an undefined property error (#119). I've tried the following:
this.x = AvEnvironment.xs // public property in this class
this.x = parent.xs
I've also tried something like this:
var ev:AvEnvironment = AvEnvironment(parent);
this.x = ev.xs
but I get a TypeError. Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
i am using xmllistcollection for displaying data in list. whenever i run my application data is display in list control, but this warning has displayed in console. How can i remove this warning warning: unable to bind to property 'xmlnode' on class 'XML' (class is not an IEventDispatcher)
View 1 Repliessay that i have a base class called Base, that is Bindable and has a String property like this:
[Bindable]
public class Base
{
public var msg:String;
[Code]......
where msg is some textInput field. I am getting a message from the compiler that....
Data binding will not be able to detect assignments to "msg"
is there a limitation with data binding to a base class?
I have a class that looks like this:
[Code]....
now when i try to get the id form the Piece class like this it doesn't work, i've been looking at this for the better part of the past hour! what am i doing wrong?
ActionScript Code:
var player1:Player = new Player("eddie");
player1.setPieces();
trace(player1.pieces[0].id);///why is this not working! getting undefined!
// i tried datacasting i get null
trace(Piece(player1.pieces[0].id));
can I use the Class datatype to make a class a property, then create new objects from that class? Like so:
class Foo{
private var ExampleClass:Class;
public function Foo(exampleClass:Class){
[Code]....
I have a document class that looks like this:
Code:
package
{
import Map;
[Code]....
Is it possible to access a property of the Map class (though map defined in the Document class) from within the hero class?
The Main.as file will have all of the game logic, such as the mysteryNumber.
The other actionScript files represent rooms that the user may click and depending on the 'mysteryNumber', it will execute the 1 of 6 scenarios.
So for example, if a user clicks the Library page, the LibPage.as will call the 'mysteryNumber' and execute some code to display on the library page.
It will be the same for the other 4 rooms.
The problem I have is that the LibPage.as won't call the 'theNumber' property from Main.as
Here's the Main.as
Code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
[Code]....
In ActionScript 3, there are some classes that will represent a value rather than the class itself. It's hard to explain properly what I mean, so take this example:
[Code]...
can you tell me a simple and clean way to pass the dimension of the stage to another class, imported in my documentclass?
View 2 RepliesI'm slightly new to Flash CS3 + AS3 combo, so its more of a lack of practice question. My question stems from the problem described here http:[url].... . Note, its not the same problem, its a new one.The Problem ,So I have multiple library assets (which are on teh stage) and I want to assign similar functionality to all of them.
Attempt 1: So I create the n assets, create a custom class in AS3, link them to Flash CS3 and obviously enough it gives me the error that multiple assets can't be linked to the same class.Obvious enough to understand (well not completely, because from a programmers background it doesn't make sense).
Attempt 2: Same as attempt 1, but instead of linking all the assets to the same class I make the base class the same class, and let the derived class be dynamically created by Flash on compile time.So the linking works, but the problem is, in my base class I have a method which does something (say an tween) on a child of the library asset. So if the assets on the stage/library are called asset1, asset2, asset3 (same name for asset name, class name, id name), each of them has a sub-movieclip called ... say 'foo'. now if I manually wrote a class for each asset, I could do 'this.foo' to play with the sub-movieclip. However since this functionality is in the parent class, I'm unable to do it.
P.S. If you're form a programming/OOP background, its basically a abstract class problem. My Base class knows how to doSomething(), but it needs aSomething, which is defined in the Derived classes. However I found out that AS3 classes don't support virtual(C++ )/abstract (Java) in the true sense of the word (unless I missed some obvious documentation).
Is there a way I can reference a Movie clip I have on the main stage from a custom class of a document class?[code]
View 1 RepliesI need to use stage.width/height in my CustomClass so I found some topics about it.

How to access a display object on the stage in a class which is not a document class?
I am looking for a solution that doesn't involve passing the stage as a parameter to the class.
One solution i always come across is using "TopLevel.as". Is it a good method because as far as I have heard using global variables is not recommended because it might cause some problems while working on big projects.
Is there a way to refer to a Movieclip on the stage from a class file of the document class
Lets say I have 3 MovieClips on the stage(a Circle, a Square and a Triangle)
I have the document class which calls another class that controls the MC on the stage
Example
ActionScript Code:
package {
public class Example extends Sprite {
//Create the instance of the class being called
[Code]....
I have created a class, call it Class1, that has various objects drawn on the stage (drawn in the IDE). It also has a function, called setColour, for changing the colour of those objects. The function works fine if I call it from within Class1.
Now I have another class, call it testClass1, that imports Class1 and calls the setColour function. First of all, none of the stage objects from Class1 are visible. Secondly, when setColour tries to modify the colour of an object, I get the error:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
This is the code for testClass1:
ActionScript Code:
package
{
import flash.display.*;
[Code].....
So, what is the problem? Is it possible to change objects that are drawn on the stage of an imported class?
I could not use stage's propertyMain.as
package{
import flash.display.Sprite;
public class Main extends Sprite{
[code].....
I am having a problem referring to stage properties, where I am trying to e.g. obtain a third of the width of the stage. My code keeps throwing up the "Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference." I have found a few things from a search online, but haven't been able to work through it yet.
I should also say that I am working in flash and have made a movieclip with a movieclip inside (which is to be used as a roll-over menu for image thumbnails). The instance name of the 'parent' movieclip is "galleryPane"; and mc inside has an instance name "thumbnailsContainer" .Here is my code:
ActionScript Code:
package {
import com.greensock.TweenLite;[code].....
I'm being really dumb today and I know this should be simple.....How do i access the stage from a class which isn't the Document Class? For instance, I want to create a tween which takes in the parameters of the stage's width? So I've written.....
ActionScript Code:
var myTweenX:Tween = new Tween(this, "x", Regular.easeOut, this.x, stage.stageWidth, 60, true);
[code].....
i can set the stage's background color, etc., using a SWF metadata tag:
[SWF(width="1024", height="600", frameRate="60", backgroundColor="#000000")]
or if i'm using Flash Professional, i can simply set these properties for the document in the UI.
while the Stage class offers the ability to set a frameRate and override width and height thru properties in actionscript, why is it not possible to set the background color of the stage the same way?
Stage doesn't have a property (public or otherwise) for background color. can anyone explain why that is? it seems strange to me but i'm assuming there is a good reason rather than this simply being a oversight.
it is a little bit about flex but I have nowhere to ask. so.
Code:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
creationComplete="initApp()">
