I am having a problem referring to stage properties, where I am trying to e.g. obtain a third of the width of the stage. My code keeps throwing up the "Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference." I have found a few things from a search online, but haven't been able to work through it yet.
I should also say that I am working in flash and have made a movieclip with a movieclip inside (which is to be used as a roll-over menu for image thumbnails). The instance name of the 'parent' movieclip is "galleryPane"; and mc inside has an instance name "thumbnailsContainer" .Here is my code:
ActionScript Code:
package {
import com.greensock.TweenLite;[code].....
i can set the stage's background color, etc., using a SWF metadata tag:
[SWF(width="1024", height="600", frameRate="60", backgroundColor="#000000")]
or if i'm using Flash Professional, i can simply set these properties for the document in the UI.
while the Stage class offers the ability to set a frameRate and override width and height thru properties in actionscript, why is it not possible to set the background color of the stage the same way?
Stage doesn't have a property (public or otherwise) for background color. can anyone explain why that is? it seems strange to me but i'm assuming there is a good reason rather than this simply being a oversight.
any preloader tutorial or sample made with Loader Class in AS3 and how do i use stage.DefaultContextMenu property in a class.
View 11 Repliesit is a little bit about flex but I have nowhere to ask. so.

I m trying to access stage.width property but sometimes it trace 650 and 720 but i see my flash file dimension is 500x400, I need to align objects on stage..
View 1 RepliesI have a swf file and i want to give it a transparent background to the stage. I understand that it's possible to give it the transparency through the HTML publish setting using the 'transparent windowless' property.However, i wanted to know whether there's an actionscript property to give the same transparency effect to the stage. like the opactiy or something (sorry, I might be wrong) The thing is I have a external preloader which loads the content swf and when it gets loaded, the stage loses it's transparency.

Does anyone know of a workaround for loading an AS3 swf into an existing AIR/Flex (Flex 3) application and having the loaded SWF retain its own reference to its stage (not the loader's stage)?
I've tried the loadForCompatibility property on SWFLoader, but that isn't giving me the behavior I'm wanting. The loaded swf still has the main AIR app's stage set.
When I have a movie clip on stage and assign the peoperty like:mv_mc._visible = true /falset either shows or hide the movie clip. What I have on the stage is just a Graphical Element and Visibility is just an property.
View 1 RepliesHow can I access objects and modify their property that is ALREADY placed on the stage using external classes (AS file)? I 'm a newbie of AS3 and followed some tutorials about AS3 not long ago. For I learned scripting in AS3 can be done using AS file rather than script on Timeline. But I have a question. How can I "find" and "modify"the objects on the stage, or inside a MovieClip , in AS3?
For example, I have a file call Stage004.fla which have no document class linkage. I place the MovieClip "StageMain" which links the Stage004.as on the stage. StageMain has a textfield in it named "textFieldStage001". The Stage004.as is ran using "Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE" since StageMain is on the stage. I create another AS file WindowRename , to test can I modify the text in "textFieldStage001".
Then the famous error #1109 occurred.
"1119: Access of possibly undefined property textFieldStage001 through a reference with static type Class."
ActionScript Code:
package {
import flash.display.Stage;
import flash.events.Event;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.display.MovieClip;
public class Stage004 extends MovieClip{
[Code] .....
I have a document class that is connected to a swf but for some reason I can't access the stage/root property. I can access all instance names that are on stage but trying to access stage will return "null". What's up?
View 5 RepliesI'm getting this error: 1120: Access of undefined property stage, in my document class.On the two lines where i commented.
I'm attempting to get an array from the main timeline. Pass it through a function which then adds objects to the stage depending what number is in the array.
my Document class:
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;

I'm using Flash CS4, as3 and adobe air file. I have an application with 3 scenes, first scene to login, second to set up, and third to see an video. The problem is that, when I put a component in the second or third scene, if a change any property in the component inspector, any property it gives me error. So put the component and I change property by code in as3. But I'm doing things with FLVPlayback component, and now before enter the scene gives me error, the solution will be to get the original properties, but I don't remember, I could install other time Flash CS4, but I can do that for any component, better know the solution.
For example, I have an as file who is the class named p.e. MyMainclass, and in the scene3, I put FLVPlayback, who default values it's the last I used (I don't remember default after installation), if any code in as3, it gives me this error:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at com.program::MyMainClass/__setProp___id2__scene3_myvideo1_1()
[com.pro gram.MyMainClass::__setProp___id2__scene3_myvideo1_1:7]
I remove this component, I put another one I never used, it doesn't give me error, I change any property in the object inspector, p.e. color, it gives me error, I change to original property again, and then No Error.
I'm having some trouble implementing a "virtual" camera for use in game development with Flash CS4 ActionScript 3.0.Basically, what I'm trying to accomplish is to have a camera that moves about the main stage so that my character can traverse the level which is much larger in size than the stage itself.I've been using Sham Bhangal's virtual camera script, and when I implemented it by sticking the code into the first frame of a movie clip, it worked great!
From there, I moved the code into a document class that i could instantiate and then drop onto the stage as a child.Finally, I wanted to have a main "builder" document class that would be added to the main stage as a child, and within THIS class I wanted an instance of the virtual camera. This is where I hit some obstacles.how to properly instantiate the virtual camera within the builder class which is then added to the main stage. I have a Stage reference that is being passed to the main builder, but I don't know where to go from here. To what do I add the virtual camera to as a child? To the Stage reference in the main builder class? To the main builder class itself?The main issue is that when I export my movie with the virtual camera added as a child to the Stage reference within the main builder class, it complains that I'm not allowed to access certain values.
Code: Error: Error #2071: The Stage class does not implement this property or method.
at Error$/throwError()
at flash.display::Stage/set x()
This happens when I try to access parent.x from within the virtual camera class. I assume this fails because "parent" from this perspective is the main builder class, but using the Stage reference produces this same error.I am, of course, willing to provide more detail if something I've written is confusing, and I will gladly provide a detailed fix for those seeking to use a similar solution in the future.
i have a UILoader that loads an image from an xml list when you click its thumbnail ( in its thumbnails mc on mainstage aswell) thing is, i have another UILoader on the layer above that loads in a swf ( a slideshow that fades in and out the pictures when they change to the next, with all the coding on frame 1, frame 2 only has a stop and some code for when the mouse is idle for 5 secs it goes back to frame 1) so when you go to "portraits" it takes you to frame "x" where the slideshow ( loaded external swf ) starts playing automaticly right, if i click any thumbnail the slideshow goes to frame 2 ( wich is perfect and the mouse idle thing i wanted works great ) the ONLY THING IS
after the slideshow runs by default for the first time ( i enter the category portraits ) and i click any thumbnail ( moving slideshow swf to frame 2 enabling mouse idle event ) and the mouse is idle ( so it does the event and starts playing the slideshow again ( goes back to frame 1 ) ) I CANT MAKE THE UILOADER OF THE THUMBS IMAGE TO DISSAPPEAR!
I have this code:

In which I am trying to create a variable to reference another class I have already created, but when I try to use the addChild method, i get an error that says it is an undefined property. Looking through other posts, I saw that maybe adding "stage." in front of addChild(blueTarget).
So I've been trying to move the stage's X and Y position and keep on getting this error:
Code:
Error: Error #2071: The Stage class does not implement this property or method.
at Error$/throwError()
at flash.display::Stage/set y()
at Main/scroll()
I am using a document class, here it is:
Code:
package

import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.Event;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;

As for why I'm trying to move the stage, I have a movieclip which moves according to keyboard input and i want the stage/Background to always center on him.
I have a MainClass from where I can call Stage. In the MainClass I call another class named Subclass, and in that one I call my ThirdClass. ThirdClass is initialized fine, but my problem appears when I want to call the Stage within the ThirdClass, to align the Stage. When I compile I receive the message: 1119: Access of possibly undefined property align through a reference with static type Class.

Currently one of our teams suffers from a very strange phenomena: after manipulating the z property of a MovieClip and changing the stage quality some event listeners of nested MovieClips seem to disappear (or at least not react to the proper events any longer).
The problem also only appears when doing both, changing the stage quality and manipulating the zproperty.
Here is a simple class demonstrating the issue:
package {
import flash.display.StageScaleMode;
import flash.display.StageAlign;
import flash.display.Graphics;
[code]....
I have 3 input textfield. Each textfield has a string pre-loaded into it. When user pressed Tab, the focus should be cycled around textfield 1-3. Now, I'm trying to set the caret index to the last letter of the textfield. What is wrong with the code?
Code:
public function myTabKeyDown(event:KeyboardEvent):void
{
[code]....
I think my issue is to do with referencing the stage, but not to sure. When I try
[CODE]...
i got this error Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. whenever I clicked on my button
[Code]...
I 've been trying to access the stage (& the parent also) through a public static function inside a public class (the document's class) which extnds MovieClip but I get an error "1120: Access of undefined property stage." What do I do wrong?
View 1 RepliesThere is a movieclip ("abc_Mc") on stage. I know, to access it, i can simply use Document class, and add a variable named abc_Mc and thus can access it.
But i wanna access it via stage property. ( As it must be a child of stage)
I added a movieclip "a_Mc" on authoring time, and used the following code :
import flash.display.MovieClip;
for ( var i = 0 ; i<stage.numChildren ; i++)
{
var a = stage.getChildByName("a_Mc")
[Code]....
I am not getting the value of that movieclip
I was wondering how do you access the stage property from a different class that's not the principal class tied to the fla? Essentially, I have main.as which calls another class menu.as, and I can't seem to be able to use the stage.stageWidth property from menu.as. What's the proper way to be able to use the stage property from any class? Do I have to import it separately each time?
View 2 RepliesSetting the text property of a flex DateField makes the selectedDate property of that DateField go to null.I need to set the text property so that I can use a particular format (DD-MMM-YYYY).
View 2 RepliesLately i discovered MATE (for Flex development) and was wondering: how do i bind a property in a view (actually a navigatorcontent component) to another property in a class so that they stay in synchronization (meaning that whenever the property in the class changes the property in the view also changes).
So if we have a view called Target.mxml and a property targertProp how do we bind it to the class called SourceClass with property SourceProp?
What's the difference between selectedChild property and selectedIndex property? I read the documentation, both seems to be setting currect active accordion. selectedChild can be only used in actionscript, but other than this, what's the difference?
View 0 RepliesCan we put [Bindable] on functions/methods? I know that bindable is used to change the value of the source property to destination property. But not sure if we can use that for methods. why we cannot put/ if we can then what will be the outcome?
