ActionScript 3.0 :: 1067 Error And Instantiating Custom Classes
Feb 10, 2009
I am having an issue where I cannot use my own classes in CS3. When I try to create an instance of one class inside another class, from within the same package like this:
var t:myClass = new myClass();
gets me 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type myClass to an unrelated type Class.
The constructor for the class is simply:
public function myClass():void {
this.isactive = false;
}

i've been struggling with one problem for weeks, and i've just found what i think is a possible cause (or at least a contributing factor)
This line:
Code:
var totalOffset:Point = rangedWeaponData.totalOffset;
What i thought it was doing is creating a copy of a static variable, for me to manipulate. However my debugging seems to show so far that it's actually creating a reference, and my subsequent manipulation of that is also manipulating the base variable it references.
Code:
var totalOffset:Point = new Point(rangedWeaponData.totalOffset);

I'm developing an AS3 application which has some memory leaks I can't find, so I'd like to ask some newbie questions about memory management.Imagine I have a class named BaseClass, and some classes that extend this one, such as ClassA, ClassB, etc.I declare a variable:
myBaseClass:BaseClass = new ClassA();
After a while, I use it to instantiate a new object:
myBaseClass = new ClassB(); some time after
myBaseClass = new ClassC();
and the same thing keeps happening every x millis, triggered by a timer.Is there any memory problem here? Are the unused instances correctly deleted by the garbage collector?

I asked yesterday how to call a function from an XML file, and I figured out how to make that work using the string-to-function call.so in my XML file I have <ITEM CALLBACK="ContactsList">View All</ITEM>, and my TextMenu class parses the XML file and creates my navigatable text menu instance. When enterMenu():String is called, it looks to see if the CALLBACK attribute has a value, and if so it returns it as a String.so..
var callbackFnc:String = textMenu.enterMenu();
if(callbackFnc != null)
{

I am currently reading the Actionscript 3 Bible and the author shows an example in which a custom eventDispatcher class is created. When the class is later used in the code it's called as such:
//Thermometer is a custom eventDispatcher that extends the eventDispatcher class.
var thermometer:Thermometer = Thermometer(event.target); //why no new keyword?
I'm a new programmer and I was curious if someone could explain how this works? Why is the new keyword omitted? When you omit the new keyword on a class that extends another class is it essentially just calling the superclass(eventDispatcher) constructor?

I've created a base class to house some basic functions I'd like to have across several movie clips in a game I'm making, however, when I link a custom class to the same movie clip I get the message; "The base class will not be used because the class specified is already defined and extends its own subclass. If you wish to use the base class, specify a class name in the Class field that will be auto-generated or enter the default base class 'flash.display.MovieClip' in the Base Class field." I removed the 'extends MovieClip' inside the Class but it still shows the message. Does this mean that I cannot use a custom class and a custom base class on a movie clip?

To begin with, I'm a student currently learning how to build a website in Flash using nothing but ActionScript 3.0. I've run into a little snag and I'm at the very beginning of my code, just setting things up. Here is all the code thus far:
[Code]....
And I got this error message relating to the addChild lines: 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type Class to an unrelated type flash.display:DisplayObject. I'm not a complete novice with Flash, but this has me puzzled.

I made a 10 question quizz in AS3, it works perfectly. It has a variable, named "score" which is increased by one with every good answer.At the end of the quizz I would like to display the score, but I can't because Flash can't display a Number value in a Dynamic Text Field.My Dynamic Text Field is named scoreTexte. My code goes like this:
scoreTexte.text=score;
but then Flash gives me the #1067 error: Implicit Conversion...My question is: How can I display the numeric Value?

I'm writing a class where I load a image with Loader and then tries to copy it into a Bitmap. This goes all and well when I do this in an event but not when I try to make a function of it.
Some code.....
class variables :
var imgLoader:Loader;
From Main :
imgLoader = new Loader();
[code].....
So far so good. but when I try to make a function that returns a copy of the previous loaded image (imgLoader) I get the error :
1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type flash.display:displayObject to an unrelated type flash.display:BitmapData.
The code looks in the function looks like this :
var bm:Bitmap = new Bitmap(imgLoader.content);
var bmret:Bitmap = new Bitmap(bm.bitmapData.clone());
Why is this? All I can think off is that in the LOAD COMPLETE event i get a reference of the current target (I think this is the way it works), and are not using the class variable defined at the top in the code.

I use multiple custom classes like tweenlite, csvparse, papervision and many more. The way I do is put them in one central location and edit Flash CS4 Actionscript 3.0 settings to include that location.The problem I face is even though I don't use all the classes in a project, flash CS4 compiles every single class that is in that central location eventually increasing my compile time by minutes.

Is there any way to get a list of custom classes? I'd like to be able to dynamically access the custom classes (that I've created by the "Export for Actionscript" checkbox in the "Linkage" dialog) without having to hard-code their names into the script.
