ActionScript 3.0 :: Allow Only 1 Instance Of Method?

I created a class of sliders that are used to control the opacity of various movieclips. The movieclips are layered on top of eachother, so if one slider is at 100%, you can't see the other movieclips below it.
Is it possible to push one slider (e.g., 'sliderBus') down to 0% when a new slider (e.g., sliderAir) is moved above 0%? Basically, I only want 1 slider to be able to be above 0% at any given time.
.fla code:
Code:
var thumbAir:img02 = new img02();
thumbAir.x = 450;
thumbAir.y = 773;
[Code]....

From my Main class, in the method onBackgrLoad, I am trying to call a couple of public methods (i.e. xmlData, hintergrund & numOfProducts) located in LoadXML. I keep receiving an error message that "loadXML" is undefined. I dont understand why because I clearly defined it in the main class:

What I want to be able to do:
- click a guy to select him
- click an adjacent tile
- move selected guy to clicked tile
The way I've coded it, each instance of a guy class has a mouse even listener on him which listens for a click. When clicked, I find out the tile underneath him, and the surrounding tiles. So far, so good.
When clicked, the guy calls a method in the tile class, like tile.onClick, which tries to say: get this tile, and send it back to a method in the guy class, like moveGuy. Then moveGuy moves the guy to the tile it was told.
Problem:
From the guy class, I call a method in the tile class. To communicate between classes, the tile class method onClick must be static. But if it's static, the method can't refer to "this", because it's a method in the class only, not on each instance of tile. But I need to know which tile was clicked, and send that reference to the guy so he knows where to go.
How do you access a method from outside its class so that the method can refer to "this" instance? OR, how do I find out which tile was clicked without needing any code on each tile instance? OR... how else can this problem be solved?

Is this problem what getters & setters are for? I don't really understand how to use them yet.

If all I have is an instance of an object, can I call a static method of its class? For fun, let's say I don't know what the name of the class is, only the name of the static method.

I'm getting into actionscript3 and was wondering if there was a way to make an 'onclick' type function that returns an id or an instance name. For example in jQuery you can do the following, which is great for then passing the id into an array or whatever you choose.
$('.menuButton').click(function(){
var collectedID = $(this).attr('id');
Is there an equivalent to this in AS3? I'm assuming grabbing the instance name would be the goal? I haven't run across ids in Flash yet.

My method has been passed a class instance, but it was typed through an interface so I'm not 100% sure what class it is. I'd like to attempt call a static method on that instance's Class.. is there an easy way to do this without being forced to pass the class along as well?
Something like this:
ActionScript Code:
public function foo(myBarInstance:IBar):void {
var barClassPointer:Class = getClass(myBarInstance);
try {
[Code].....

I am curious if this is an okay implementation of the Array.filter() method.
[Code]...
I was not able to figure out an implementation of the callback function for the filter() method, where the callback was outside of the getGallery() function. I wonder if there is a way to get the isGallery function outside of the getGallery scope?

Does creating a new instance of an Object that uses an identical name to an older instance, delete the previous instance? Or should the original instance be deleted first? The code uses a ridiculous amount of XML vars. Isn't it less memory intensive to parse the XML and save the properties to an Object, and then delete the XML Object, rather than keep the XML Object around and reference it's child nodes directly? Is it better form to break up a huge XML file (>600lines/3200vars) into smaller chunks?

I have a class called Unit. When I use this class in a .fla file, I create it by saying:
var unit00:Unit = new Unit(...);
So then it creates a gfx representation of the screen for me. I would like to have a method like this:
PHP Code:
[code]....
So how do I get this to work? I know that delete this will not work when defined inside the class. How do I target the .fla's instance name when I don't know what it will be called?

I have a class called Animal that has a method foo() and I call it out within the Animal class.
Code:
protected function foo():void
{
trace("Animal");
}
I also have a class called Cat that extends Animal and overrides the method foo()
Code:
override protected function foo():void
{
trace("Cat");
}
However when calling the function foo() from the superclass it traces out Animal not Cat (using a Cat object).How can I make superclass call out methods in the subclass?

I have a library object (SomethingMC) which extends a custom class (Something). Something, in turn, extends MovieClip.If adding SomethingMC to the stage within Flash CS3 IDE, is it possible for it's super class (Something) to assign an instance name from a class constant (Something.THE_CONSTANT)?
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;[code].....
The above does not work. It throws Error #2078: The name property of a Timeline-placed object cannot be modified. if the instance is assigned a name in the IDE, and it just doesn't work if no name is assigned in the IDE.

I have a BUNCH of bumpers of four types bounceUp, bounceDown, bounceLeft, bounceRight. during a collision which you hit determines the bounce so they always do the same thing so here's my question.....can i just name every bounceUp instance the same thing and then just add that one instance name to the list the collision detector checks?
i just dont wanna go through and name a hundred each of bounceUp s and bounceDown s individually as the potential for screaming increases proportionally.......

I am wrapping my brain around OOP in AS2. I am making two posts on two different subjects. My question here is: when should I use local instance variables, and when should I attach new properties to the instance object? (Feel free to correct my terminology.) Let's say I have a class for a scrolling background, which scrolls when I mouse over its edge. I want to put these values somewhere:
1) How wide is the border in which a mouseOver makes it scroll? This is basically a semi-constant I set it up once and keep it the same, unless the user changes it in an options menu to make the border wider or narrower. Call this scrollBorderWidth.
2) How fast is the background scrolling now? I want to track this so I can smoothly change the scroll speed over several frames. This is often changed. Call this scrollSpeed.
It seems I have two ways I can store and access these values and darned if I know which is better practice. METHOD A: Make them local variables in the class, so the scrolling background instance has them as local vars. I set them up thusly:

I have a base class I've used on 6 different MC's. Then when I use these MC's my function runs an if statement to check which one to add.
if(id=design) var obj = new design();
if(id=team) var obj = new team();
I want to make it a bit more dynamic and use the id:String to evaluate which new instance to create.
ActionScript Code:
public function loadChapter(id:String):void {
var obj = new instance_of( id )();
}

Is there a way to get a method's parameters from outside the method? I know that there's an "arguments" property but it's only accessable from within the method. I'm working on a RPC system and need to store the method parameter types in a hash table for easy access later on.

I have a bunch of text boxes which are acting as labels on a diagram.The idea is all the labels are jumbled up to start with, and the user has to drag the labels to the correct place.So far, I have the labels, and they are dragable, but I want to be able to lock the label onto a specific area (I've called them crashzones) so that when the user drags the label onto the correct area, the label snaps into place.The 'crashzones' instance names, are indentical to the label instance names, with the exception that the 'crashzones' instance names have the letter 'z' at the begining.
On the dragStart event, something (maybe a string) would hold the instance name of the current label and add the letter 'z' to the beggining, so something like ... crashzone = "z" + label1;As there is an instance with the name "zlabel1", when the dragstop event starts, it'll do a 'hittestobject' on the instance "zlabel1".
I'm not entirely sure how to go about this.I've tried creating a string to hold the 'crashzone' name, but the hittestobject event doesnt work with strings i.e: hitTestObject(stringname);I've also tried with Sprite, but as the sprite technically already exists and has a name, I can't give the sprite any properties.
