Actionscript 3 :: Function Or Method To Return An Elements Instance Name?

Jun 19, 2011

I'm getting into actionscript3 and was wondering if there was a way to make an 'onclick' type function that returns an id or an instance name. For example in jQuery you can do the following, which is great for then passing the id into an array or whatever you choose.

$('.menuButton').click(function(){
var collectedID = $(this).attr('id');

Is there an equivalent to this in AS3? I'm assuming grabbing the instance name would be the goal? I haven't run across ids in Flash yet.

Actionscript 3 :: Return Different Type From Overridden Method?

Jan 13, 2010

I'm extending the AS3 class Rectangle with a class called Bin. I want to override the Rectangle clone() method with a method that returns a Bin object, not a Rectangle object. If I try to override the clone method but specify Bin as the return type, I get a #1023: Incompatible override error. Here's my Bin class:

package {
import flash.geom.Rectangle;
public class Bin extends Rectangle {

[Code].....

This class works, but when I use the clone() method to create a new Bin instance, I get type errors when I try to use the Bin methods on the new instance.

How do I override clone() and send an actual Bin instance?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Return Class Instance As String

Feb 1, 2009

Is there anyway to include a function or overrite something in a class that'll output a custom string when the object is called as a string?

So for example if I created a class named "myClass" and I instantiated it:

Code:
var myObject : myClass = new myClass();

When I:

Code:
TextControl.text = "blah blah, " + myObject;
myObject is getting casted as a string. Normally it would output:
"blah blah, [object myClass]"

Is there a built-in function that recast the object as string? Is there anyway for me to change that string output? I know I can just make a public toString() method in the class or something, but just wondering if there was something better.

I'm having some troubles with the use of interface and inheritance in AS3. I've done lots of OOP in the past and what I'm trying to do seems obvious to me, but doesn't work in AS3. The question is : Is it possible to override a function that return an Object of class A, and make it return an Object of Class B which extends A ? It seems not to be possible, since I'm getting a signature error in Flash, when compiling. For example, the following set of class do not compile (the code in function definition doesn't matter):

Is it possible to return the index of the first instance of a specified value within an array? Similar to:

Basically, I have two arrays, each with 10 values (in slots 0-9 of the arrays). So I need to see if an array has a specified value in it, but then I have to see if the other array has a certain value in it, in the same spot as the first instance of what I search for in the first array.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Access A Method On Instance From Another Class?

Jan 21, 2010

What I want to be able to do:

- click a guy to select him

- click an adjacent tile

- move selected guy to clicked tile

The way I've coded it, each instance of a guy class has a mouse even listener on him which listens for a click. When clicked, I find out the tile underneath him, and the surrounding tiles. So far, so good.

When clicked, the guy calls a method in the tile class, like tile.onClick, which tries to say: get this tile, and send it back to a method in the guy class, like moveGuy. Then moveGuy moves the guy to the tile it was told.

Problem:

From the guy class, I call a method in the tile class. To communicate between classes, the tile class method onClick must be static. But if it's static, the method can't refer to "this", because it's a method in the class only, not on each instance of tile. But I need to know which tile was clicked, and send that reference to the guy so he knows where to go.

How do you access a method from outside its class so that the method can refer to "this" instance? OR, how do I find out which tile was clicked without needing any code on each tile instance? OR... how else can this problem be solved?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Function Can Not Return A Value

I'm communicating to these movie clips with another program via binary sockets.For the first set of movie clips: when it recieves its instance name, and a second number (InstanceName+#) from the socket, the named movie clip will jump to the frame corresponding with that number. for ex:if the incoming data from the socket is (mc7+3), then movieclip 7 will jump to frame 3.

For the second set of movie clips: when it recieves its instance name, and a second number (InstanceName+#) from the socket, the named movie clip will move location across the screen, by the y coordinate moving to the # given by the socket...thats a little confusing. for ex: if the incoming data from the socket is (mc4+500), then movieclip 4 will move so that it's y coordinate is at 500.[code]...
