ActionScript 2.0 :: Flash8 : Return The Index Of The First Instance Of A Specified Value Within An Array?

Apr 29, 2009

Is it possible to return the index of the first instance of a specified value within an array? Similar to:

Code:
var my_string = "string";
var index = my_string.indexOf("g");

/*Outputs:

1
*/

Basically, I have two arrays, each with 10 values (in slots 0-9 of the arrays). So I need to see if an array has a specified value in it, but then I have to see if the other array has a certain value in it, in the same spot as the first instance of what I search for in the first array.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Tracking Array Index Of An Instance?

Sep 9, 2011

I'm trying to keep track of several movie clips with an array, but I'm running into some issues. I'm making a shooter game that requires hitTesting a list of projectiles and removing the projectiles from the list when they leave the screen or hit stuff. I've got the projectiles being added to the stage with this:

[Code]...

At first that appeared to work fine, but the bullets aren't always removed in the order they were created, so when I remove one from the array in this manner, it shifts the index numbers for all the ones that came after it back one, thus making their "num" variable no longer correspond to their index number; so when they try to splice themselves, they end up splicing the wrong ones. (Like, if I removed [3], the bullet that was in [4] is now in [3], but it doesn't know that, so it tries to splice [4], which now refers to whatever was in [5], and so on.) What's the correct way to handle this kind of situation? I feel like I must be missing something obvious, but I haven't been able to figure out a solution.

Flash :: Get The Specific Array Index Based On Value Inside The Index's Object?

Jun 22, 2011

So, for sending to individual streams we have to reference the connected netStream we want to send to in some way like this:

sendStream.peerStreams[0].send("MyFunction",param1,param2);

and I have to determine which peer I'm sending to by their ID such as "peerID1234"

I know that you can check the peerID of the stream by doing:

sendStream.peerStreams[0]["farID"]

how can I make my send stream function know to use the array index where the peerID is?

so basically it could be like:

sendStream.peerStreams[where peerStreams[]["farID"] == peerID].send("MyFunction",param1,param2);

Dec 7, 2005

I've found out that when publishing with Flash 8 my previous MX's working fla files, I get multiple errors.I've had a look at the Export publishing settings and I think they're all correct: - Exporting version: 8- AS Version: 1.0So, I guess it must be a silly thing I'm doing wrong but after a long while I haven't been able to know what's wrong. Perhaps AS compatibility is not that accurate?The most common error I get is:"A ')' or ',' was expected" or"An unexpected '}' was found"(I'm using Spanish Flash 8, so I don't know if this is the exact message you're given in English Flash 8) The 'supposed to be wrong' code seems to be in lines like[AS].posicion = posicion+eval("abc" add i)+gap;abc=eval("_parent._parent.abc" add _parent.n)[/AS]and I even get a "Declaration must be inside a on/onClipEvent controller" here:[AS]._xscale=abc*1.4;[/AS] ...while ALL of this code worked perfectly in Flash MX, I get up to 104 errors in Flash 8

ActionScript 2.0 :: Flash8 Variable From Instance Name?

Sep 5, 2009

I've got these 150 buttons on my stage which all do the same thing. They test their value against myVariable to see if there's a match. If there is, it's a right answer and the user gets a point. The myVariable may be anything between 1 and 150. I have my button code on a single frame now but I'm looking at duplicating it 150 times (1 for each button instance). This seems a wasteful way of doing things. Is there any way I can extract a variable from the instance name? The buttons named btn1~btn150.

Is there any way to:
btn 1~150 onRelease
var newVariable = [instance name - "btn"]
I guess this requires some way to listen for an instance name.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Return Class Instance As String

Feb 1, 2009

Is there anyway to include a function or overrite something in a class that'll output a custom string when the object is called as a string?

So for example if I created a class named "myClass" and I instantiated it:

Code:
var myObject : myClass = new myClass();

When I:

Code:
TextControl.text = "blah blah, " + myObject;
myObject is getting casted as a string. Normally it would output:
"blah blah, [object myClass]"

Is there a built-in function that recast the object as string? Is there anyway for me to change that string output? I know I can just make a public toString() method in the class or something, but just wondering if there was something better.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Flash8 : Dynamic Instance Naming Of MC's?

Jun 5, 2009

I have 4 Mc's on the stage, and they have instance names 'mc1' - 'mc2' etc.The MC's have links in them (they are kind'a navigation items) and i need to change the functions of the 'rollOver, and mouseDown events', but keep the MC's the same.The MC's are referenced by instance name and given functions in the first few frames of he movie. for example

---------------
mc_1_0.onRollOver = function() {
if (_root.mc_1_0._currentFrame == 1) {

[code]...

Now, what i want achieve is to change the instance names of the MC's (mc_1_0 for example) so that when the user interacts with this MC on the stage, they are taken to locations of my choice (and the actions of another MC), by switching the instance names. IE, i want to change the instance name of 'mc_1_0' to 'mc_2_0' at runtime, BUT i want to do it with a variable from a .txt file.i would need to start with a script that looks for the MC with a certain instance name

-- look for instance mc_1_0, and then change the instance name to 'mc_2_0'

The effect would be that the user would instigate the same actions, regardless of which of the two MC's they rolled over.Maybe i could call the instances initially 'MC_1_Temp' and 'MC_2_Temp' etc: and then i would need a script to change them to 'mc_1_0' and 'mc_2_0' at runtime.SO in the text file i would need something like this

--------------------------
&MC_1_Temp_name=mc_1_0&
--------------------------

this way the behaviour of the MC on the stage wil take on the functions of another MC.should i be looking at something like this placed on the MC.....

onClipEvent(load){
//make this instance called - var = MC_1_Temp_name
}

$('.menuButton').click(function(){
var collectedID = $(this).attr('id');

Is there an equivalent to this in AS3? I'm assuming grabbing the instance name would be the goal? I haven't run across ids in Flash yet.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Getting An Array's Index?

Jan 18, 2011

I have a game map made of tiles, each tile is stored in an array called _tiles.The very each tile has a "plantable" parameter, which determines whether or not something can be placed on it.Then i loop through the array and check the position of each its elements against the mosue cursor, so I know which tile am I hovering with my mouse.

And it works pretty good. The problem is that even though I know what is the position of the tile I'm having the cursor on, I still lack the knowledge of what index is that tile. I simply can't tell where exactly in the array is placed this tile. I just know its position. The reason why I want to know the index of it, is because it's the only way for me to set a proper flag, namely whether it's plantable or not. Here's the code:

ActionScript Code:
for(var j:int = 0; j < _tiles.length; j++)
{

ActionScript 3.0 :: Index Of Array In For-each Loop?

Jan 29, 2009

Consider an array with x number of elements (of type Object) where some of the elements might be undefined.I use a for-each loop to access all the elements of the array that is not undefined (since it simply skips the undefined elements).But I also want the index of that particular element.The only option I can see is to use indexOf(). But it feels a bit like looking for water on the other side of the river so to speak.

When looping through long arrays each frame, is there a change indexOf() might slow it down? or does the for-each loop somehow know what index it's dealing with?
