findSurface(origin:Point, vector:Point, attempts:Number):Point The function has an obscure use, but the idea is thus: given those three arguments, returns a point IF the 'line' (created by the origin and vector arguments) intersects the object the function is called on. [but that is another story...]
More importantly, if there is no point of intersection at all, what should the function return? Void? Null? Undefined? Object? Or can I use one of those return types instead of Point incase the function does not encounter an intersection?

Jan 13, 2010I'm extending the AS3 class Rectangle with a class called Bin. I want to override the Rectangle clone() method with a method that returns a Bin object, not a Rectangle object. If I try to override the clone method but specify Bin as the return type, I get a #1023: Incompatible override error. Here's my Bin class:

This class works, but when I use the clone() method to create a new Bin instance, I get type errors when I try to use the Bin methods on the new instance.
How do I override clone() and send an actual Bin instance?

Jun 19, 2011I'm getting into actionscript3 and was wondering if there was a way to make an 'onclick' type function that returns an id or an instance name. For example in jQuery you can do the following, which is great for then passing the id into an array or whatever you choose.

Is there an equivalent to this in AS3? I'm assuming grabbing the instance name would be the goal? I haven't run across ids in Flash yet.

Jan 21, 2009I have a problem with returning variable between classes. As far as I know there are some ways to do it but in this particular case I tried to use Getter.
So I have an XML file (content.xml), a class to read XML (LoadXMLExt.as), a class to display images, and the main class which first call the LoadXMLExt to get the information from and then call the displayimage class including passing the information from LoadXMLExt.

Sep 15, 2009I am trying to make a hangman game and have made an array with words and picked one at random each time the movie is run and then taken that word and broken it apart into each letter. I then made a loop to create a new TextField for each letter. Then I set them all to "visible = false"I want to get to the point where if the user selects a letter that is in the word that that TextField with said letter will become visible. Only I cannot figure how to get a function outside of the loop to see the variables (i.e. instance names of the TextFields) inside the loop.Here is my code:

Jul 3, 2011when i write prototype method and declare a variable inside the prototype method. this is fine but as sonn as i declare another variable with the same name i get an error. conflict with "variable" namespace internal. i've contact other users and they claim they don't get this same issue. i'm using flash CS3, i have flash player 10 installed but cs3 only supports up to 9 so i have 9 selected. and i'm using AS3. this is some code you can use to test to see if you get this issue:

Flex :: Value In Datagrid Itemrenderers Set Data Method Doesn't Return The Correct Data?
Jan 10, 2012I've got a Gridcolumn in a Datagrid (Spark). The Column's dataprovider is a Number value that gets updated via Binding.Now, without an item renderer the cell displays the correct values.If I set an item renderer, I can't access the values in this renderer.My renderer looks like this, so nothing really do here (for now) but to trace the value, but the value is always NaN.

_listItems is an ArrayList with instances of a model class, which has (amongst others) a property called change of type Number.
