Jan 21, 2009I have a problem with returning variable between classes. As far as I know there are some ways to do it but in this particular case I tried to use Getter.
So I have an XML file (content.xml), a class to read XML (LoadXMLExt.as), a class to display images, and the main class which first call the LoadXMLExt to get the information from and then call the displayimage class including passing the information from LoadXMLExt.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Return Variable From Loop?
Sep 15, 2009I am trying to make a hangman game and have made an array with words and picked one at random each time the movie is run and then taken that word and broken it apart into each letter. I then made a loop to create a new TextField for each letter. Then I set them all to "visible = false"I want to get to the point where if the user selects a letter that is in the word that that TextField with said letter will become visible. Only I cannot figure how to get a function outside of the loop to see the variables (i.e. instance names of the TextFields) inside the loop.Here is my code:

Aug 4, 2009I'm having some troubles with the use of interface and inheritance in AS3. I've done lots of OOP in the past and what I'm trying to do seems obvious to me, but doesn't work in AS3. The question is : Is it possible to override a function that return an Object of class A, and make it return an Object of Class B which extends A ? It seems not to be possible, since I'm getting a signature error in Flash, when compiling. For example, the following set of class do not compile (the code in function definition doesn't matter):

Add EventListener On Return To 1st Frame?
May 23, 2011I'm not sure exactly what's going on here (maybe I'm not understanding how the timeline executes?).
I have a game that has the menu in the first frame, the game in later frames. When the game is won, the user is able to click to return to the menu. Using trace(), I've found that the click reads, and it starts to execute the actions that have been written in the 1st frame. But, when it gets to the line that adds an event listener to a button on the stage using solo.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,goSolo) (solo is the name of the button on the screen), it returns:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
The line executes just fine when the whole thing initializes, so I don't know why it's not working when it restarts. Is the code getting read before the stage is populating when I return the user to the main menu using gotoAndPlay(1) from the click listener? It doesn't make a difference if I use gotoAndStop(1). What's a good workaround?
Or is it because the button is in a layer lower than the actions? (I've always put my actions in the highest layer, and don't remember ever having this problem before). But why then would it still work at the very beginning but not with the restart?
