How do I get the datatype of a variable? In this case it is pretty obvious, but I am trying to make a substitute for function overloading in a class.

Feb 9, 2010basically what I am trying to do is dynamically add graphics using actionscript. So far it has worked but I ran into a problem. I am using addChild to add the pictures and the instance name.addChild(imageLoader). I need to convert the xml parsed data (xmlData.player[0].@position) to a instance name which I believe is data type MovieClip. So I am trying to convert my xml which is a string to a movieclip. Here are snippets of code:

Actionscript :: Library Implementing A 'set' Datatype?
Jan 15, 2010Has anyone implemented a Set class in ActionScript? Specifically, a Set which is similar to Python's set implementation (unordered, unique, O(1) membership, etc). I'd like to be able to iterate over it using for each, perform operations like union and intersection and get a list of all the contained items... Which would all be possible to implement using Dictionary and Proxy, but I'd rather not reimplement it if someone's already done the heavy lifting.

Apr 17, 2007The title of this post may not make much sense, let me explain. I have a function:
findSurface(origin:Point, vector:Point, attempts:Number):Point The function has an obscure use, but the idea is thus: given those three arguments, returns a point IF the 'line' (created by the origin and vector arguments) intersects the object the function is called on. [but that is another story...]
More importantly, if there is no point of intersection at all, what should the function return? Void? Null? Undefined? Object? Or can I use one of those return types instead of Point incase the function does not encounter an intersection?

Mar 28, 2011How exactly does the datatype checking of Vector work? The documentation states that an exception occurs at runtime if there was a wrong argument pushed to the Vector. However if I try this:

And then I trace it, I get NaN (cos it is a thumbnail ). However, no exception is being thrown.

I have imported a jpeg into Flash CS3 IDE Library and Exported(Linkage) it to be used in action script by giving a class name 'Image'. And when I am trying to compile the file its showing error: 1136: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected 2. and 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type Image to an unrelated type flash.display:Bitmap.

Aug 21, 2009I want to declare a variable on the main timeline that can be called from anywhere in my movie. So, _global var should be the right approach. I want to declare a movie clip 'MC1' "open", or "closed" so that when it is revisited, my flash file knows the user has been there before and performs a different task from the one it does when 'MC1' was first encountered. So, i need a 'if' statement to run from the variable, when the playhead encounters the movieClip.

Feb 8, 2010I have 2 movie clips, one being loaded into a container MC via "loadMovie();"In the main movie there is a variable with no value, in the external movie there are 5 frames, each with a value to update the variable in the main movie.
IE: if on frame 1, global value = 1 / if on frame 2, global value = 2 / etc etc I'm familiar with passing variables INTO an external swf, but am stumped on how to do it the reverse way.

Jan 31, 2012I'm still learning flash and actionscript 3 and i am having trouble with variable and object names. I need to be able to combine variable names together (in the same way as php can combine by doing var1.var2).
My swf contains 4 loaders (image1_loader, image2_loader etc..) which are a child of (image1_content, image2_content etc.....)
I then have 4 buttons which load an image into the loader and while doing so they define the currently active loader.
Finally i have 4 control buttons - scale up/down and rotate clockwise/anticlockwise which should only control the currently active loader (as set by the buttons above)[code]...
