Flex :: External SWF Variable Updates Global Variable In Main Timeline?
Feb 8, 2010
I have 2 movie clips, one being loaded into a container MC via "loadMovie();"In the main movie there is a variable with no value, in the external movie there are 5 frames, each with a value to update the variable in the main movie.
IE: if on frame 1, global value = 1 / if on frame 2, global value = 2 / etc etc I'm familiar with passing variables INTO an external swf, but am stumped on how to do it the reverse way.

I'm working with three files. Main.swf which contains navigation.swf in a blankmc, empty mc called mcContent where navigation sleclected materials are loaded.
In the navigation.fla here is the code
[AS]trace("now defining global");
_global.loadFile_str = strPicName;
trace("global defined as");
[Code] .....
When I do a trace of loadFile_str in the first frame of monthlyreports I get a undefined. I have tried trace(loadFile_str) and trace(_global.loadFile_str). I also noticed that if I define the global on the main movie (it maintains the global variable, the navigation fla will not overwrite it).

I simply want to assign a variable to the current frame of the main timeline (not movieclip timeline) I already know about _currentframe and it doesn't help in this case.

I'm trying to access a global variable in an external swf. I'm loading the external swf like this.
myLoader.loadClip(game, 2);
I'm running a main loop that repeatedly checks certain variables. The variables that are not global I am able to access in the following fashion:
_level2._root.variable;
But I can't seem to access the global variables in the external swf. Things I've tried:
_level2._global.var;
_level2._root.var;
_global._level2.var;
_global.var;

I'm trying to add a value to a variable inside the Main .SWF from a loaded movie. More clearly,My main movie name is Main.swf. On the main timeline of Main.Swf, I have a variable named currentMovie.Now, I have other movies that are loaded into Main.swf. For example, cars.swf is loaded into Main.swf.What I want to do is have code in cars.swf to add a value to the currentMovie variable in the Main.swf. I just need the correct syntax.
for example,:
MovieClip(parent.parent).currentMovie="some_value" ; is not working for me...

I have a class, the relevant parts of which are defined as follows:
class myClass extends MovieClip {
public function myfunc() {
trace( "mainVar: " + _root.mainVar );
}
}
As you can see, I want to access the variable "mainVar", which exists in the main movie, from within the class. This works fine, if I have only one instance of the class. But, if I have more than one instance, within separate movie clips, the value of mainVar is always taken from the first instance. How do I refer to the actual instance from within the class?

Here's my main class:
Code:
package
{
import flash.external.ExternalInterface;
[Code]....
Basically the class waits for the callback variable (my_msg). The problem is: I need to set the dynamic textbox text to my_msg variable.
How can I access it? I know I can access a public var in the timeline with functioname.variable but I can't define a public var inside a function, right?

I'm was getting good with as2 but recently made the mind switch from, I'll learn as3 tomorrow to as3 is awesome. The problem for me is that I don't understand the scope for classes. I know I can trace a variable on the main time line when the var is declared in the class. But how do you access a main time line var from a class? Here's an example - main time line Monkey.fla
Code:
var cagedMonkies:int = 10;
var monkeyTransport:MovieClip = new CarTrunk();

I have a navigation bar movieclip that has the following EventListeners in symbol definition:
news_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, clickHandler);function clickHandler(event:MouseEvent):void { event.target.root.gotoAndStop(1,"newsawards");
categoryName = "news"; <<<DOESNT WORK}
clients_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, clickHandler2);function clickHandler2(event:MouseEvent):void { event.target.root.gotoAndStop(1,"clients");}
[Code]...
My question is, how can i cause any of these events to change a string variable in the main timeline? For instance, i would like the news_btn when clicked to change already defined variable located in the main timeline. Also, is there a more elegant way to code the above, i'm new to AS3?

I declared a variable & it's value in the main timeline. Then I created a movieclip and have some actionscript inside that movieclip. Is it possible to read the varialbe's value within the movieclip?
Let's say I have this variable in root timeline var myVar:Number = 100; and I want to read myVar's value within a movieclip like following trace(root.myVar);

I am trying to work with a global variable in Flex and it does not appear to be working correctly. In my default mxml file I declare the following
public var appID:int;
This variable keeps track of the session ID across my application for SQL purposes. On another mxml page I call the following code which should update the global variable to the current ID.
// Get the ID
sqlStatement.text =
"SELECT Max(id)FROM applications";
sqlStatement.execute();
var result:SQLResult;
result = sqlStatement.getResult();
FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.appID = result.data[0];
Lastly I run a SQL Update query using the ID as a parameter. My problem is that the FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.appID is always 0, for some reason the global variable never gets updated, I have checked to ensure that result.data[0] is correct but the value never gets passed to the global variable.

How do you define a global variable that is accessible across all views on Flex mobile / Flex 4.5/4.6
(Edited for clarification)
Is it still necessary to have to use a separate global class?
(additional) There is a new PersistanceManager in Flex 4.5, is there something like a GlobalObjectsManager that can be used to just set/get stuff in memory?

I am creating a very basic menu. My project consists of a main file that then calls other swf's to fill in the rest of the content. My main timeline is this. There is an preloader which hasn't been built yet, a intro section that is two movie clips (one loads the layout, one fades in my buttons). Then when all this loads, I load the first swf. My difficulty is that I am trying to get my buttons, which are held in mc_buttons, to change the variable myLoader on the main timeline. So when you click on a button, it swaps in a different swf for the current loaded one. I have tried calling the following code attached below.
My error is:
"1119: Access of possibly undefined property myLoader through a reference with static type flash.display:DisplayObjectContainer."
Now, if I define the myLoader variable in the mc_buttons and do an addchild() there, I get the correct content, it just is on top of the old content which isn't what I want...

I'm converting an old AS2 file into AS3 (and trying to learn AS3 at the same time).A movie clip contains a number of different animated sequences and buttons within the application trigger these different sequences.The buttons are functional only when an animation has completed playing.
In AS2, I achieved this with a var called _root.animating which was initially set to "false" and switched to true when the animation played and switched back to false at the end of the anim sequence. The buttons checked this var when clicked. Here is some of the AS2.[code]...

I'm trying to catch a variable content (set on the main timeline) from a movie clip added to the stage. I need to set a condition with that variable, so here's my line :
Code: Select allif (MovieClip(root).screenMode == ("full"))
But it's not working, I'm also trying to trace the variable with that command :
Code: Select alltrace(MovieClip(root)[screenMode]);
But this doesn't work too.

I am trying to make a simple mp3 player using flash. The songs are loaded using an XML file which contains the song list. The following code is inserted into a new keyframe.
import flash.media.Sound;
import flash.media.SoundChannel;
import flash.events.*;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
[code]...
The problem over here is in the nextSong() function. I am unable to preserve the value of currentIndex. Although I am incrementing currentIndex every time the function is called, but the value remains unchanged.
