ActionScript 3.0 :: Assigning A Frame To Class Instance

May 4, 2009

I've created a card class that holds the specifics properties each card can have. Now I'm trying to figure out a way to associate the graphic with the card.  What I have now is a movieclip with each frame representing a different card. The movieclip is linked to the card class I created.I'm trying to do it with variations of  this.gotoAndStop(frame#) in the constructor of my card class, which gives me a card graphic but not having much luck in gettng the frame number to increment to the next frame with the next call for: var cardname:cardclass = new cardclass.The worse part of this is I'm not even sure I'm on the right track here, so my main question is: Is this even a viable way to accomplish this? If not, please give an overview outline of how I should be approaching this.

ActionScript 3.0 :: XML Loader Class Instance And Assigning Values

Oct 6, 2011

I have a small issue with instantiation of an xml loader class. I'm using a standard way of loading external data and assigning it to "myXML" variable. My class uses event.COMPLETE for loader to make sure that data is fully loaded. Everything works fine until I make an instance of this variable in to my Main() class. The trace of "myXML" gives me null. It's like it didn't assign data on time. Since the onComplete event handler should take care of any delays it is hard for me to figure this out.

ActionScript 2.0 :: MovieClip Animation Stops After Assigning Instance Name

Sep 22, 2009

I have an all flash website I am finishing. On the "index" page of it, there are 7 buttons all pointing to different painting galleries on another page (or another MC in this case).

These 7 buttons happen to be movieclips so that I can have animation on rollover and rollout. A sample of the current AS2 code for them is below:

on (rollOver) {
gotoAndPlay("s1");
}

[Code]....

In this case, on the index page there is a movieclip with successful animation on rollover/rollout. I assign this clip the instance name of "gallery0" and when clicked, goes to a separate page showing the first gallery.

My problem is this, whenever I do assigned the instance name to any of the 7 movieclips, the animation no longer works. It simply sits there in the default state and acts as it should as far as navigation goes.

Is it possible to add a textField dynamically but have different instance name each time this is created? In other words if I have a button that whenever its click it will add a textField to the stage and assigns a new instance each time this is added.

ActionScript Code:
button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, addField);
var inputWidth = 200;
var inputHeight = 20;
function addField(event:MouseEvent):void{

Something like this but instead of textFieldName this would be different each time.

I'm using a library that has a function that returns an instance of some class Engine.

I'd like to tack on some interfaces to Engine, so I subclass it class InterfacedEngine extends Engine implements AwesomeInterface. but when I change the code that uses the classes from this:

var engine:Engine = generateEngine();

It gives me a runtime error (elision mine):

ActionScript 3.0 :: Access Values Held By A Class Instance From Another Class Instance?

Oct 14, 2009

I have to admit I pretty much ran away from Flash when AS2 came along and only used it for animation purposes over the last 5 years.So I'm having a major crash course in AS3 in Flash CS3 and I'm not enjoying it one bit. I'm getting maybe 10mins of finished work per hour as I try to figure out the limits and rules of AS3. Quite often it seems that AS3 simply can't do what I want it to. Anyway: Characterchecks.as is the main class and it loads a bunch of XML into four arrays. The file starts like this:[code]If I trace the value of, say, cc._Categories from the main FLA, it's empty. I'm guessing that the next line of AS in the main FLA doesn't wait for the previously called function to complete? (This may tie in to my next problem)My next step is that I want to display various things based on the data in the array. I have another class, Display.as which will hold all the functions to create the items on display. I thought it would be best for these to be a separate object. I wonder if I'm right?

So I declare an instance of Characterchecks in the main FLA and call it cc, and then run the functions to populate the arrays... Now I create an instance of Display and call it cd. How can I get functions in cd to see the values of the variables in cc? And if the main timeline can't tell that the functions aren't finished filling the arrays, how is cd supposed to know?I might be asking dumb questions, or maybe I'm doing things ***-backwards, I don't know. I'd appreciate any help, I really would. This whole thing has me at the end of my tether... being the most technically advanced person in my circle of co-workers and web design friends means I have no-one to explain why things need to be done a certain way or what the best way is.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Assigning Parameters Instance And Library Item In Function?

Mar 4, 2009

Basically looking for a way to get the instance created when I use this function I've made, it seems to me "libItem" will be a new instance and I would like to re-assign that back to the item passed into the function so I can access the instance later.

Here is the function I created to create library on the stage...
Code:
function objectPlacer( libItem, instance:Class ):void {
libItem = new instance( );
addChild( libItem );
}

So here is how I call the function
Code:
// Function( var name, library item class name, pos x, pos y )
objectPlacer( i_ranks, txt_Ranking );

My problem is, I try to access "i_ranks" later with the following code...
Code:
i_ranks.x = 100;

And I get the error:
TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.
"i_ranks" is defined as a class member.
Also, if you know - what should types should I be assigning the parameters instance and libItem in the function?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Sending A Class Instance Reference To A Different Class Instance?

Apr 14, 2011

I'm creating a little game - The player controls a character that follows the mouse. Pigs run away from the player, and the player has to get them all into a pen. To make the game a little more difficult I'm trying to add an enemy - wolves, that attempt to perform a 'hunt' method every x seconds. This method sends a reference of the wolf instance to Main (my document class) and Main then loops through the pigs on stage to see if there's any nearby. Now as far as I know this works - my problem is I'm unsure how to send the pig instance reference back to the wolf that called the hunt method, so it can then 'target' the pig, and then attempt to pounce on it.

This is my Wolf class:

Code:
package

import flash.display.MovieClip;

Actionscript 3 :: Reference A Class Instance From Another Class Instance?

Dec 10, 2010

Quick question. I have been Googling this all morning, but it's either not there, or else written in a way that doesn't register. I am inclined to believe the latter, as this seems like it should be something completely trivial to me. I made a small Flash file using AS 3.0, and this is the first time I've really been able to stick to the OOP way of doing things and not hack together a mix of stuff from the timeline to get around not having everything work in the classes.

So I'd like to keep it that way, but one thing is eluding me: I can't call a method of an instance of another class (than the one I'm calling from) without resorting to "DocumentClass(root).instanceName.method." Intuition tells me there has to be a better way of doing this (like, without having to reference the document class every time I call another class instance's function; and CERTAINLY without having to use the word "root" - that just seems so Flash 5 to me. Does anybody have a better way of doing this that they can share?

IDE :: Assigning Different Class Paths?

Feb 9, 2009

i have a main page that loads a swf of an xml photogallery onto the main stage. I used the classpath in actionscript settings to target the actionscript files and xml data. So far, everything works well. Now, a button on the stage unloads this swf and then loads a second photogallery. The problem is that when it appears, it contains the same data (images) as the first photogallery. This is because it is using the same classpath as the first gallery. My question is how can i assign each gallery its own class path. It seems that only one can be selected at a time.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash - Assigning Frame Events To Dynamically Attached MCs?

Aug 12, 2011

I'd been working on a side-scrolling shooter game in AS2 for a while and it was going great, but for whatever reason, it scrolls all choppy and the framerate is inconsistent on faster machines. I would have expected the opposite, but it is what is is, I guess. So I'm trying to finally learn AS3, and I found some tutorials that got me started towards remaking what I had, but now I'm stuck.I'm trying to make one of those rotating cannons that shoots projectiles towards the mouse cursor. I have the rotation part working, but I'm having trouble with attaching the projectiles to the stage with enterFrame actions on them.I feel like I'm pretty close to a solution, but I don't understand where to put the functions to move the clips to make them work properly. In AS2, I just put something like this on the cannon clip:

Code:
bullet = _root.attachMovie("bullet", "bullet"+_root.bullets, _root.getNextHighestDepth(), {_x:nozzledot.pointx, _y:nozzledot.pointy});

Flash :: Creating An Instance Of A Class That Implements An Interface Based On The Class Name?

Feb 17, 2011

Is there a way to generate an instance of a class that implements an interface based on the name of the class?

I am trying:

var ClassReference:Object = getDefinitionByName("movement.OuterSpaceMovement") as IMovement;

I have several classes that implement the same interface (IMovement) but I need to be able to generate new instances of these classes and then pass these instances as a datatype (IMovement datatype) to other classes...

So then I tried:

var ClassReference:Class = getDefinitionByName("OuterSpaceMovement") as Class;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference() as IMovement;
and this doesn't seem to work...but the following
var m:IMovement = new OuterSpaceMovement();

ActionScript 3.0 :: Creating A New Instance Fails When Base Class Is Assigned To An External Class File?

I'm trying to create a new instance of a MovieClip when the original one has been used. Would sound easy enough. Just use: var

instanceName:ClassName = new ClassName();

the class name/mc in the library im trying to duplicate is MCg1 so

var instanceName:MCg1 = new MCg1(); right?

However, the particular object in the library i'm trying to duplicate has a base class that is an external class file (just to control it's drag drop functionality)... i.e baseclass is not set to the standard flash.display.MovieClip, or whatever the case maybe. So i end out with a: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
