ActionScript 3.0 :: Object Property Naming By Constants From Another Class
Sep 3, 2009
I'd like to make an object that has it's properties named by constants from another class but can't quite get it to work. I'd essentially like to do something like this:
var myObject:Object = {Event.OPEN:"value", Event.COMPLETE:"value2"};
This syntax causes compiler errors.

If I have three classes:
public class Example {
public function Example () {
}[code]............
You can see that the two last classes extend the first one, and both have the 'variable' property. In case that I have an instance of Example and I am sure it is also an ExtendedExample OR AnotherExtendedExample instance, is there some way to access the 'variable' property? Something like
function functionThatReceivesAnExtendedExample (ex:Example):void {
if(some condition that I may need) {
ex.func()

Again pulling my hair out due to some Flex/AS3 weirdness. The following code does not compile due to error 1120 - Access of undefined property AbstractWizardModel
<mx:HBox id="cntr_buttons" width="100%" horizontalAlign="right">
<mx:Button label="{model.getButtonLabel(AbstractWizardModel.GO_BACK)}" />
</mx:HBox>
The constant is defined (in AbstractWizardModel) as:

I have declared some public static consts within a class Instrument. So that I can hopefully access them like Instrument.SAX, instrument.HARP, etc. etc. But when I go to trace out or compare the consts, it gives me this error:
1058: property is write-only

Since there's so much potential pollution within namespaces, particularly with the parser automatically declaring any MXML component with an id to be publicly-accessible using that ID I'm finding it dangerous to use just camelCase for MXML element ids. eg:
[Code]...
In Flash development, a lot of us did this for (automatically) declared stage instances like "mcMyTabBar" or "navMC" or "playPauseBTN". I'm looking for input from the Flex community about this. Am I just overthinking things? All of the related Style Guides and best practices documents I've read on the topic just say "use camelCase for ids, and make sure the id property is the first property". What's your take?

How do you go about creating a Class that just holds constants such as the StageScaleMode or StageAlign classes. I tried just making a class with just public static constants and an empty contractor but I get errors.

I want to create a function pointer object:
private var func:Object = { Class.Constant: function };
What is the clean way of doing this? I did the above and got
Error: Syntax error: expecting colon before dot.
And I'm not even sure that's right. The goal is that I can just do
func[ Constants ]();

I am working on a Flash site template for which I am implementing the possibility for the users to change the theme dynamically while the site is opened.Basically, the site will have a few themes available and when the user selects a new theme, all of the site objects will change their properties (colors, alpha, fonts, etc) to fit the new theme.
And my questions is what is the best approach to sending the theme information to all of the objects in the site.I was thinking of making a static class called "Theme" and when the objects need a property, they will call a static getter of the Theme class that will return the appropriate property value for the object.But, from my understanding, static properties are quite slow and seeing that I may need quite a lot of them, maybe more that 100 for the whole site, will this approach be too slow ?

I have some code from a CS3 app composed of the .FLA file with an .AS file for the class that had definitions for two private classes in it. Yesterday I brought the files into CS4 and noticed that they did not compile. Gives an 1120, access of undefined property and names a constant. I have reduced this problem down to bare bones and it still occurs, so it is a bug in CS4.

Flash UI Components have many different styles to set, which require passing a string name to the setter method.while this certainly is not challenging, the use of a constants class would be beneficial but i can't find one.is there no constants class available with all of the possible style settings?

var ConfigObj:Config = new Config({
"Some" : 10,
"Other" : 3,
"Another" : 5
});
The class looks like this:
public dynamic class Config

I have a class ErrorMessages which holds all my error messages as static constants. So I could access them like ErrorMessages.PASSWORD_INVALID or ErrorMessage.PASSWORD_TOO_SHORT. I want to know if it is possible to have separate classes that hold subset of these constants and access them like ErrorMessages.PASSWORD.INVALID or ErrorMessages.PASSWORD.TOO_SHORT, etc. This way I can more structured static structure and makes it much easier to use autocomplete. I tried few different ways and couldn't figure out if this was possible..

In AS3 I would like to set the key of a shared object with the contents of a string as opposed to specifically naming the key.
so.data.test = "andy" // this is the basic working system
I do not want to write test I want something like this
// this is a non working and incorrect solution but shows what I am trying to do.
String myKey = "test"
so.data.{myKey} = "andy"

Lately i discovered MATE (for Flex development) and was wondering: how do i bind a property in a view (actually a navigatorcontent component) to another property in a class so that they stay in synchronization (meaning that whenever the property in the class changes the property in the view also changes).
So if we have a view called Target.mxml and a property targertProp how do we bind it to the class called SourceClass with property SourceProp?

I have the following inheritance structure:
var environment:AvEnvironment = new AvEnvironment(...);
addChild(environment);
environment.addChild(new Terrain());
environment.addChild(new Player());
I am trying to access a public property from AvEniroments class through the Player class, however I'm getting an undefined property error (#119). I've tried the following:
this.x = AvEnvironment.xs // public property in this class
this.x = parent.xs
I've also tried something like this:
var ev:AvEnvironment = AvEnvironment(parent);
this.x = ev.xs
but I get a TypeError. Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

I have an object which is assigned a number of properties:
var project_array:Array = [];
var slideObject:Object = {
project_title : myXML.projects.project[i].title.toUpperCase(),
[Code].....
but I'm not quite sure where to place this. If I place it outside of the object constructor, I get "term is undefined", I guess because it doesn't know what project_clips_array is - but if I declare project_clips_array in the constructor, it appears to need to be defined, i.e. I can't create a blank property. But I can't place it in the constructor either, because it doesn't seem to allow me to run a function within an object constructor. What is the proper syntax or arrangement of code for executing this function to get the array within the object?

I found a really weird behavior when using deep copy for objects (ObjectUtil of Flex framework).Imagine we have a class B which extends class A. Class A has property body which is of type ByteArray.I create object b (instance of B). Then I make a deep copy object bCopy, BUT this bCopy object does not contain body property at all! All others properties (of scalar types) defined in Class A are copied properly.When I define property of type ByteArray directly in class B, then this property is copied properly..

Data binding will not be able to detect assignments to "msg"

I was wondering how do you access the stage property from a different class that's not the principal class tied to the fla? Essentially, I have main.as which calls another class menu.as, and I can't seem to be able to use the stage.stageWidth property from menu.as. What's the proper way to be able to use the stage property from any class? Do I have to import it separately each time?
