I'd like to restrict the amount a user can type into a textbox based on the width of an existing textbox on the stage. I played around with the max chars but when you type something like a 'W' it is considerably wider than something like a 'i' (current font is 19px vs 4px wide). I was playing around with .textWidth, but wasn't sure how to use that value to restrict the textbox.

So is there any solutions..??? I dont want to use MaxChars as it can restrict user to not enter more than predefined number of characters. I'm making a project in which I have a input/output text box. I'm trying to restrict the words that are able to be said in the input box, but I can't seem to figure out how I'd do that. I'd think that I'd use .replace, and possibly an if function which tells it that if a word used does not equal the allowed words, to replace it with something such as ###.

View 3 RepliesI am currently working on a project for my computer programming course, creating an rpg game, and have already ran into a problem i've spent a few hours trying to fix; I have an input textbox with the instance name of "inputname". The player is supposed to put his name here and then click a button, instance name continuebtn, that will change to frame two on the scene. Frame two has a dynamic textbox with the name of "greetingtb".
greetingtb already says 'ahh so your name is ' and after that I would like to add the name that was placed into inputname. What I thought would work was create a variable with the name of playername. I dont know if i wrote this right, i declared it as my first thing in an action layer:

I am making a little banner for my site that makes different offers based on geo location (zipcode). I have the code working pretty much except for a few elements I want.
1) I want the input box to say "Enter Zip Code" until the user clicks on the input box. Then it clears out and the user can enter their zip code. The text box at this point should only take in 5 digits and no more.
2) Instead of having to click on the button to submit the form I want the user to also have an option just press enter when they are on the input text field and it process the form.

I'm using flash cs5.5 and usually when i make a text field, the text is cut off by the width of the text field unless i autosize it, but with TLFTextField, it just resizes itself without me telling it to. How do i set the TLFTextField so that the text stays within a certain width and crops everything past that width?

I use a TextInput component of Flex 4.5 to enter some text in English. I use the restrict attribute to ... restrict the keyboard input to characters a-zA-Z only. The problem is that if i copy/paste a word in another language, i can then paste it into the TextInput component. Is there a way to avoid that? If no, how can i validate the input against a specified language?I found out that the unicode set of Chinese+ language symbols is u4E00 to u9FFF. So i write the following:

I'm attempting to draw a text box on the screen. If I assign width and height to any value, as in the code below, I don't see anything drawn. Why is this? What is the use of width and height? Adobe's docs say it's the width/height of the sprite in pixels. Why would that occlude or prevent the drawing of a textbox or another box? I assumed the width/height would set the area that this sprite could be drawn upon, but based on this, I'm probably wrong.

I have need to restrict user input. TextInput should restrict all special characters and punctuation. Any other characters are allowed. In java there is a regex patter:
replaceAll("\p{Punct}", "_")

is in the constructor, the user must tab or click the inputbox to obtain focus.

Maybe someone knows what's up. I've got an input textbox and a dynamic textbox, and I've got a key listener so that whenever you type in the input appears in the output. I've embedded numbers and cap letters in both. This works locally, but when I put it live, you can't type anything into it?If you paste any content into it, it works fine, but, typing it doesn't. The weird part is it works when previewed in flash but not on a server.If you check the 'Custom plate' at the bottom of the 2nd column of options, it sets focus to the input box, and there the trouble happens.I'm thinking it's something with the key listener? I'll try to put the code here for your scrutiny. Weird that it's putting in a space in 'function' of the onrelease, that's not how it is, but also I don't think that part is the problem, but just something with the forum here.[code]
