ActionScript 3.0 :: Access Child.swf Function From Parent.swf?
Dec 22, 2008
I have to access a function in child swf from parent swf. This child swf gets loaded into a canvas object in parent.swf. Everything works fine but I'm unable to call any function that was in child.swf. My code is
Code:
var swf1:SWFLoader = new SWFLoader();
swf1.source = "CHILD.swf";
can.addchild(swf1);
I read on google and then I tried this in parent.swf's code
Code:
var myrequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("CHILD.swf");
var myloader:Loader = new Loader();
myloader.load(myrequest);
canvas.addchild(myloader);
Now this one throws up a runtime error TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.display::Loader@5934b01 to mx.core.IUIComponent.
I also tried this
Code:
var myrequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("CHILD.swf");
var myloader:Loader = new Loader();
myloader.load(myrequest);
[Code]....
But in this case my swf does not show up at all and there are no runtime errors too!
How do I resolve this error and how do I then access the function in child.swf?
The external swf is located at:[url]....In the parent.swf, I put System.security.allowDomain(url....)When you click a button on the child.swf it's suppose to trace data from the parent.swf, but it returns undefined.What am I doing wrong? I MUST access data from the parent.swf
I am getting the following error:1119:Access of possibly undefined property through a reference with static type TenI am explicitly casting, and tried this.parent and still get the same error. What am I doing wrong.
Here is the code: package { import flash.display.*;
I got a Parent Sprite, let's name it SpriteP, which holds inside it two other Sprites. Sprite1 and Sprite2.[code]Sprite2 is a rectangle. When I rotate it, of course, the height of its parent, SpriteP, GROWS. But I would expect that height to go back to what it should be when I'm removing Sprite2!And it does! If I remove Sprite2 while NOT being rotated, the height of the parent drops back to normal, 200.
i am slightly confused about the parent and child relationship. lets assume we have several different instances, what would be difference of adding them all as children of the stage and creating a parent-child hierarchy between them(other than the access path).
I got a Parent Sprite, let's name it SpriteP, which holds inside it two other Sprites. Sprite1 and Sprite2.
When Sprite2 is NOT rotated:
Code: trace(SpriteP.width + ' ' + SpriteP.height); //100 250. SpriteP.removeChild(Sprite2) trace(SpriteP.width + ' ' + SpriteP.height); //100 200. -> works, 200 is good. When Sprite2 is rotated at 90:
[Code].....
And it does! If I remove Sprite2 while NOT being rotated, the height of the parent drops back to normal, 200. But if I rotate Sprite2, the Parent won't update its bounds.
I have a public variable set within fx:Script tags in a parent component that I'd like to access directly from a child component. How can I do this? I don't want to pass the variable to the child component (I know how to do this and am currently using this approach). Following is a simplified version of the mxml:
Note: SimpleComp is an HBox with a couple of lists. <mx:Accordion> <comp:SimpleComp/> </mx:Accordion>
From the two .as files below, I get the following error when I run: 1119: Access of possibly undefined property importantNumber through a reference with static type flash.display:Sprite.
Imagine the following setup. The main swf loads a child swf.In AS2 i would simply use _parent or _root to call the desired function. How can that be done in AS3?Can this still be done? Can I call a function on the main swf from the loaded one? How about the other way around, this time, from main to loaded swf?
i've got an inheritance chain of AS2 classes set up where i have an array in the 'child' class that i'd like to be able to access from the 'parent' class:
bottomClass.as -'parent' topClass.as -'child'
my question/dilemma is: how can the parent access the properties of a child class...is this even possible, or am i just looking at it wrong?

I have a function (let's call it testFunction for right now ) on the actions layer in the main timeline There is a movie clip with 15 frames long in the library
i want to add a child of the movie clip on the stage, and call testFunction when it finishes playing
how can i do? i tried to call it in the child but nothing works
Or, is there any way to show child on the stage for only a period of time like 1 second and then remove it automaticly?
That class has a loop that creates / instantiates a number of copies of another movieclip from the library. This second movieclip has a textfield child in it. When I convert this textfield to a movieclip I can access the properties of it fine, but just as a dynamic textbox I can't access it.
This is the custom class of the second movieclip that gets instatiated a few times by the first custom class...
This custom class relates to a movieclip that has a child MC called recent_text (which I can access ok) and in that child is another child (a dynamic text field called "aDynamicTextBox", which I can't access)[code]...
I have a function in a child that I need to have executed by the parent but I can't get it to work. Does anyone know how to call the function in a child from a parent?
What I'm doing is having the parent load a few buttons and I want to re-use the button swf, but have the parent provide the text for the button.[code]...
Is it possible to call a child function from within the parent? I know to go child > parent, you can do parentApplication.functionName(parameters);, but what about going the other way... that is parent > child?
I have a main.mxml, child.mxml and headermenu.mxml. I click a button on the headermenu that dispatches an event up to the main.mxml which then executes a method in child.mxml. I know this works because I put an AlertDialog in the function I'm calling inside of the child.mxml. The child.mxml contains a drawingArea object that has an erase(). When I call this directly from child.xml it executes, however if I put drawingArea.erase() inside of the function being called by child's parent (main.mxml) nothing happens.[code]...
I have container swf which includes navigation that loads child swfs. Each child swf is loaded then visibility is set to false. Once a child ( an image gallery actually) is loaded it is possible to jump from image to image. What Id would like to be able to do is call a "clean up" function that returns the child to its initial state when anothor nav link ( a different gallery) in the parent is clicked. But I do not know how the syntax is supposed to be written or if its even possible.
Ideally it would look something like this in the parent container swf:
ActionScript Code: function swapSectionIdentity(e:MouseEvent):void { setChildIndex(background_home, 0); getChildByName("identity_mc").visible = true;
[Code]...
the behavior I am attempting to avoid is when a child swf is loaded ( an image gallery) and then the child is invoked to display a particular image in it, afterwhich a main navigation link is clicked the current gallery is set to visible = false and a new gallery is set to visible = true. But when you return to the previous gallery the last image viewed is still showing. I want to be able to reutrn to galleries inital state as it is hidden. make sense?
I need to get the value inside a handler.. ActionScript Code: public function verifyUser(p:String):String{ var verify:String var variables:URLVariables = new URLVariables(); var varSend:URLRequest = new URLRequest("verify.php"); varSend.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; varSend.data = variables; [Code] ..... It's always returning 'null'. because its not waiting for the completehandler to be completed and just passes the null value of verify..
I have setup a simple video interface. The video player lives in the parent swf. The video list chooser is loaded as a child swf. In this child swf, I have some video buttons nested within two movieclips in order to facilitate the scrolling feature. I am trying to get the movie buttons to load flvs into the component flv player in the parent swf. I have declared the functions in the parent and I am trying to call them in the child:Code in the Parent:
function vid1(event:MouseEvent): void{ pubPlayer.source = 'vid1.flv'; }
For instance, in the below code a parent can control a SWF child's function "alert ()". But how a SWF child can control parent's function "ReceivingChildMsg()" ?
I have a main MovieClip that creates a new instance of an imported class which is a page in the application. This class tries to call a function on the main MovieClip and it's not finding it. I've done this in the past without any problems with separate swf files and loaders, and with movieclips in a library. I'm at a loss on how to resolve this. Here's what I'm doing (simplified for posting):
I am adding a child .swf from the parent with a simple button. If this button is then clicked multiple times, the child is added multiple times. So I added the ".visible = false" to the button when clicked so the button cannot be clicked while the child is open.
Now, there is "Close" button on the child .swf that uses "this.parent.parent.removeChild(this.parent);" and would now need to set the parent button back to ".visible = true".
I have tried MovieClip.parent.parent.resetButton(); and parent as MovieClip.resetButton(); and many variations of the code. I get no errors but the code doesn't work either.
I do not want to use external .as files because I will have about 100 swfs to manage in this project, 100 swf is a lot of file management alone without adding 100 .as files on top of it.This is the code in the parent swf file to call the child swf and place it in the page_mc movieclip (note in my final project "child.swf" is replaced with the loading array variable but we're going to keep it simple):
ActionScript Code: var pageLoader:Loader = new Loader(); page_mc.addChild(pageLoader); var loadedpage:URLRequest=new URLRequest("child.swf"); pageLoader.load(loadedpage);
Now just for a simple function to call, we'll say we have a box_mc on the stage in the child swf, and when we click the button in the parent swf I want to call a simple function like this to hide it:
ActionScript Code: function hideBox(event:Event):void { box_mc.visible=false; }
how do I call that function in the child swf from a button in the parent swf?
I have this movieClip "Container" and within it on two different frames I have two movieClip/buttons, "pause_btn" and "play_btn", respectively. I would like to call a function on the main timeline on frame two of "Container" where "play_btn" is located. I think I'm getting close but really have no idea. I know about the visible property and have been considering that, but isn't there a way to call a parent function from within a child movie clip? The code looks like this.
