Professional :: Access Methods From/to Parent And Loaded Child Swfs?

Sep 14, 2010

Imagine the following setup. The main swf loads a child swf.In AS2 i would simply use _parent or _root to call the desired function. How can that be done in AS3?Can this still be done? Can I call a function on the main swf from the loaded one? How about the other way around, this time, from main to loaded swf?

Actionscript 3 :: Bad Form For Child Components To Call Methods On Their Parent?

Feb 4, 2010

I have a parent class that instantiates a MenuClass and handles transitions between pages.[code]And here's the MenuClass which creates forward and backward buttons. Clicking each will tell the above ParentClass to transitionForward() or transitionBackward() respectively.[code]One one hand, I feel like the MenuClass is too tightly bound to its parent and is thus less reusable. On the other hand I feel like, in the interest of keeping everything self contained, it's not the ParentClass's responsibility to reach into the MenuClass instance and add event listeners there. This seems like there should be some kind of OOP rule-of-thumb to govern this kind of relationship.Is my MenuClass too tightly bound to its parent? And if so, do you have any suggestions that would loosen that coupling?

Actionscript 3 :: Can't Access Properties Or Methods Of MC Child That Has Been Added In Script

Apr 24, 2010

I have created a loop to instantiate tiles on a board. In the following example, "Gametiles" is an array containing objects of class "Tile" which is a class that extends MovieClip. "Game" is a MC that I added to the stage in the flash developing environment.[code]This method is a bit cumbersome though. I really don't want to have to create a var and call getChildByName every time I want to interact with these properties or methods. How can I set up these children so that I can access them directly without the extra steps?

Is there a way I can share sound assets between parent and child swfs?

Currently, I have a parent swf that loads a child swf (and each have preloaders) and some of them have the same sound assets. I would rather only load the sounds once... can I reference a sound even if it 'lives' in another swf?

Flash :: Loaded Font Doesn't Show Up When Parent Swf Creates TextField In Loaded Child Swf

Jun 14, 2011

Im working on a project that has a main swf file associated with the document class. It loads XML that provides the text content for the project, then it loads a swf that contains a font in its library, then it loads the first of several content module swfs. When the font swf has inited, I'm registering its library font with Font.registerFont(), and using it in a TextFormat object. After everything is done, I can add code to the document class to create a text field on the stage of the main swf and format it successfully with the TextFormat object, but when I try to do the same thing inside the loaded content module swf, the text doesn't show up there at all.

Professional :: Methods Used For Loading External Swfs And Assets?

Jun 29, 2010

My client wants to take all the Flash games on their website and put them on a portable device that's not connected to the internet. I need to make sure that the swfs are completely self contained, in that they do not require the internet to load any swfs or other assets. The client does not have any of the fla's, so my plan is to download the swf and decompile it with Sothink, and then search the AS for these methods:

URLRequest
loadMovie
loadMovieNum

If the search returns results then I'll assume the game is loading something and that game will not be used. The client doesn't want to put any development time into this, so it either goes on the portable as is or not at all.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Calling Child Movie Methods From A Parent Movie [MX]

Jun 16, 2003

I'm working on a Flash MX application which involves a Parent movie and a Child movie.

I've loaded the Child movie into the Parent movie using LoadMovie. The instance name of the Child movie is Child1.

In the Child movie I have a user-defined function called getChildXML (we don't need to get into more details about the function).

The point here is that I want to call the getChildXML function from the Parent movie. I've tried something like Child1.getChildXML(); but with no luck.

Actionscript 3 :: Can't Access Methods Of Loaded Swf File

I can't seem to access anything from a loaded swf file. I can, however access parent variables/methods from inside the loaded swf file.

var ldr:ProLoader;
function loadExternalSWF():void {
ldr = new ProLoader();

[Code]....

This just gives me the error:

TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.

EDIT: wrapperMC is just an empty movie clip instance that I've created and positioned on the stage to load the external movie into.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Load External SWFs - Parent Document Which Essentially Loads One Of The Ten Child Documents Onto The Respective Key Frame

Apr 29, 2011

I've got this interactive poem I've been working on for a class. I've basically finished each "episode" seperately. I made a parent document which essentially loads one of the ten child documents onto the respective key frame. Here's a sample of the code for the first key frame of the parent document:

stop();
import flash.net.URLRequest;
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.Event;
stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, LoadSWF2);
[Code]....

Well Two things are messed up about it, well my "ChildTimeline2" variable will off and on assosciate itslef not with the main time line of a child document, but of a nested symbol inside said child document. Even worse, the "gotoAndStop();" command I will give sometimes applies to Parent document... yaay! but often it will apply to the child document. The end result being this horrible looping moment where you are stuck in one child document for all time.

I wish I could attach the documents but they exceed the 300KB. how I can get Actionscript to listen fro the last frame of the maintimeline of the child document, or tell flash to gotoandStop for the parent document

ActionScript 3.0 :: Access Child.swf Function From Parent.swf?

Dec 22, 2008

I have to access a function in child swf from parent swf. This child swf gets loaded into a canvas object in parent.swf. Everything works fine but I'm unable to call any function that was in child.swf. My code is

Code:
var swf1:SWFLoader = new SWFLoader();
swf1.source = "CHILD.swf";
can.addchild(swf1);

I read on google and then I tried this in parent.swf's code

Code:
var myrequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("CHILD.swf");
var myloader:Loader = new Loader();
myloader.load(myrequest);
canvas.addchild(myloader);

Now this one throws up a runtime error TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.display::Loader@5934b01 to mx.core.IUIComponent.

I also tried this

Code:
var myrequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("CHILD.swf");
var myloader:Loader = new Loader();
myloader.load(myrequest);

[Code]....

But in this case my swf does not show up at all and there are no runtime errors too!

How do I resolve this error and how do I then access the function in child.swf?

I have an elearning course, a .swf, that loads multiple .swfs as the user progresses through the course. At the end, there is a quiz.

The quiz.swf uses the radiobutton component. I have developed some custom skins to use on the radiobutton component. I have figured out that:
I have to add an instance of a radiobutton in the main .swf for the radiobuttons in the quiz .swf to show.I have to copy the radiobutton intance from the quiz swf library to the main swf library if I want my custom skins to show in the quiz swf While, this works fine. It is not practical. I want the quiz.swf to more modular. So I can pop it in to any course and not have to go back in and add the radiobutton skins to each course.

Loaded Child Movie Controlling Container Parent

May 14, 2009

i'm a designer trying to step up my flash skills and have a scripting problem that's causing me trouble. essentially i have a child swf loaded into a container in a parent swf and want the child to be able to instruct the parent. to explain in full, the child contains an flv with bespoke video player components. it's container sits in one frame of the parent. when the flv finishes playing, i need the parent swf to move onto another frame.
as it's a controllable flv, it isnt possible to predict the exact length of time the child will need to be present, so it literally needs to tell the parent it's finished playing at that very point.

Problem: my first attempt was to REMOVECHILD when the door closed, however, still functions in child=loaded file are continuing Possible Solutions i had in mind: I assumed if PARENT, dispatches an event and CHILD listens, i can say, if the door is closed, dispatch event to the child to stop functions. but it doesnt work, because i assume i dont know how to listen for an event dispatched from parent

I am also open to any alternative solution that helps me shut off the activities when the door closes down, dispatching event was the first thought that came to my mind, not necessarily the only answer i m looking for.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Root And Document Class For Child SWF Loaded By Parent SWF?

Feb 12, 2011

I'm using a PreLoader as a parent SWF that loads the actual website as a child SWF. In the website SWF, the child SWF, will MovieClip(root) still work and refer to it's own root, or the PreLoader's root? And would I still access the websitite's document class (the child's document class), through MovieClip(root)? What if both files have a document class?So my main question is how do document classes and MovieClip(root) behave in the scenario when you have:

Parent SWF - document class, MovieClip(root)
|
Child SWF (loaded by parent) - document class, MovieClip(root)
