Flex :: Access The Public Properties And Methods Of A Loaded SWF
Mar 18, 2011
How would you go about calling the public properties and methods of a SWF you load in actionscript?
I have been using stackoverflow for years to answer my programming questions so I wanted to give back by writing a guide to an issue I had a lot of trouble figuring out. This is my first user guide so tell me if there is anything I can do to improve it.

I have a question about classes. I just learn that static means that functions and/or properties are specifics to a class, but is it a synonym of private? And why statics (not available to any instances?) properties and/or methods can have a public (available anywhere else (timeline)) access modifier? PS: I just start with classes.

I have an urgent task to implement in my project code. I can't able to access the new properties and methods which are present in FileReference Class. For load() ,save() methods needs runtime version of Flash Player 10. I need to include the flash player 10 in CS3 publish settings Version. Otherwise you can suggest how i can able to access the FileReference class new properties and methods without CS4.

I have created a loop to instantiate tiles on a board. In the following example, "Gametiles" is an array containing objects of class "Tile" which is a class that extends MovieClip. "Game" is a MC that I added to the stage in the flash developing environment.[code]This method is a bit cumbersome though. I really don't want to have to create a var and call getChildByName every time I want to interact with these properties or methods. How can I set up these children so that I can access them directly without the extra steps?

Let's say I have a defined ClassA. ClassB extends ClassA and there's a Movie Clip instance on the stage linked to ClassB. How would ClassC access the properties and methods of ClassB without extending ClassB or creating a new instance of ClassB? The way I'm currently doing it is by referencing the stage instance linked to ClassB and then using the dot syntax to access ClassB instance variables, and this works only if the the accessed variables are public or internal, depending on what package ClassC is part of. I would like to know if there's a better, cleaner way to accomplish this.

I can't seem to access anything from a loaded swf file. I can, however access parent variables/methods from inside the loaded swf file.
var ldr:ProLoader;
function loadExternalSWF():void {
ldr = new ProLoader();
[Code]....
This just gives me the error:
TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.
EDIT: wrapperMC is just an empty movie clip instance that I've created and positioned on the stage to load the external movie into.

Imagine the following setup. The main swf loads a child swf.In AS2 i would simply use _parent or _root to call the desired function. How can that be done in AS3?Can this still be done? Can I call a function on the main swf from the loaded one? How about the other way around, this time, from main to loaded swf?

I have been working on a Flex Mobile application using Flash Builder 4.6. I have 2 mxml 'views' in my project. In one mxml file, i have a function that grabs xml data. In my other mxml file, I have a refresh button that when depressed is suppsosed to call the function in the first mxml file in order to once again grab the xml data. I dont know how to call that function from outside the mxml file it is housed in. [UPDATE #2]* I thought I should share some more details about my issue.
It is a reddit client mobile app. It fetches the feeds, etc. In my main view called RedditReaderHomeView.mxml, I am using a splitViewNavigator spark component to house two other views like so:

To my knowledge this doesn't break Liskov's Substitution Principle as an instance of a subclass can do all the things that an instance of a superclass can do.

Main movieclip onstage is : design_mc. Within it is a movieclip already in place onstage with an instance name clipart_mc.also loading a ListBox to the stage and each time a selection is made from listbox myLoader9 is used to load selected .swf intodesign_mc.clipArt_mc.Now within each of the .swf files loaded into design_mc.clipArt_mc there is a mc ike to color transform called color_mc.So now the listbox is onstage and I make a selection that places heart.swf inside of design_mc.clipArt_mc. I want to access heart.swf so I did this:
var child:DisplayObject = myLoader9.content.contentLoaderInfo.content.color_mc;
var colorTrans3:ColorTransform = new ColorTransform();
var trans3:Transform = new Transform(child);

If I have a swf that's being loaded into other peoples' swfs (which I have no control over) is there any way I can get properties from the stage (such as height, width, fullScreenHeight, etc.) or does this have to be exposed by the loading swf?

I have a flex application which collects data entered by the user and posts it off to a web service I have running on a back end server. The flex application does not authenticate users (it's available for anyone to use without setting up an account) and communicates to the web service using HTTPS. There is an XML firewall in place for preventing certain malformed requests, DoS attacks etc and the web service validates all data received from the client.
If I was to sign the content then I could use the XML firewall to verify the signature but I assume that any certificate type data I embed in the client could be extracted out of the flex app through some means of de-compilation. My question is, is there any way of limiting calls to the web service to only those from my flex client? I understand that a user could input bad information but I'm really trying to prevent another client or 'bot'.

I am still very new to Actionscript and have an okay working knowledge of Flex. I am working on an AIR application that runs a SQLite database underneath. The database is only 3 tables (projects, items and types). I was wondering if Actionscript best practices are to use a data access object or layer to store all of my database functions or to just run them inline as needed. I would assume an access layer would be best for interacting with the database for usability, but I can't seem to find much documentation for SQLite in AIR.

So the reason I'm asking is..I have like 2000+ lines of code in 5 different separate classes. And they ALL have public properties and methods (as in, ALL the properties and methods are public). This is a fairly complex tile game 2d platformer. And yet everything is working fine. From what I've read, it seems that it 'MAY' cause problems later, where you might make a mistake and call a property twice, or call it 'wrongly', which then 'MAY' cause a bug that would be hard to backtrack.
There are surely many other reasons why not to do this..but if everything is working smoothly so far, should I really go back and try to make every variable private and recode this engine before I get to far?

This might be a very stupid question, but I have to ask it anyway. I am graduating in about a month and while studying, I have always been taught to use properties instead of public variables. So I started wondering what the advantage was and I must say that in some cases, I have no clue at all. Of course it is handy when some other logic needs to be executed when setting properties or getting properties, but is there any advantage to using properties when you are only getting/setting a variable? An example of what I mean is shown below (As3).
