ActionScript 3.0 :: AddChild Getting Covered Up By Background?
Jun 19, 2009
I have a carousel menu that is placed on the stage using addChild(); It works fine, but when I place the code in my .fla, the carousel is covered up by my background graphic.I've remedied this by placing an empty movie(menuHolder) clip on layer above the background and assigning it to the addChild(), hence Code:menuHolder.addChild(imageHolder);I don't like the idea of empty movie clips on the stage. I've tried stage.addChild(), but then I get warnings and the .swf seems to slow down after a time...Here is the carousel code (sorry, it's alot, but the addChild is in a couple places)
Code:
//We use 70x70 sized images (change this if different for your images)
const IMAGE_WIDTH:uint = 70;
I am making a game and need to know how much a particular mc is covered by other mc's placed randomly on the screen.Is there a way to tell how much is left seen of the mc as it's slowly being covered by other mc's?
I know this is a much covered subject but after spending two days trying different things I have to admit I'm baffled. Got two swf I want connected to one another to act like a portfolio gallery - parent is called "portfolio" child is "portfolio_flash_2"
Both have animation at the start with the child having a skip button (cause its animation is 20 odd seconds long). after the animation the thumbnails appear for the larger images.
On both swf's the buttons I'm using to load (parent to child) and unload (child back to parent) appear after the animation - I can get the child to load from the parent but having problems knowing what proper code to use on the child button "page2_btn" to return to the parent.
Facebook Connect uses JS/CSS overlays/popups for user interaction. I have sites with Flash elements, and no matter how I set the z-indices, the Flash always seems to go to the topI have a similar and likely related problem with a div with display:fixed at the top of the screen, where it gets covered by the Flash when you start scrolling.

I am currently designing a website for a fiend and would like to make the content of the website tabbed. What I mean by this is I would like the visitors to click on a tab (e.g. Contact) and the tab would slide out with the appropriate information inside. Okay so that part is easy, the problem I am having is that when one tab slides out all of the tabs on layers below the contact layer get covered up. I would still like for all of the other tabs to be visible. I would like for all of the tabs to slide out as if they were behind all of the other tabs. The link is: [URL]
i have 2 sprites on stage. bottomSprite is added to the display list first, followed by topSprite. topSprite partially covers bottomSprite.i've added an event listener to bottomSprite for MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVED notifications to simply trace the mouseX and mouseY coordinates. however, the notification doesn't work for the parts of bottomSprite that are covered by topSprite.
var bottomSprite:Sprite = new Sprite(); bottomSprite.graphics.beginFill(0x666666, 0.5); bottomSprite.graphics.drawRect(150,150, 150, 150); bottomSprite.graphics.endFill();
I'm trying to have a class file which can add objects to the stage via addChild; however, when I call addChild from within the class file, I get the error "1180: Call to a possibly undefined method addChild." I've tried importing flash.display.* and that doesn't fix the problem. Does the class file have to extend Sprite or MovieClip to be able to add objects to the stage?
I have downloaded Box2d ([URL]) and created a project that looks like this: [URL]. catalyst is the green cube and it has the base class "shapes.box", it is inside "world" which has the base class "wck.World". What i want to do is to add another "catalyst" from the library inside "world" when i click on add_btn. I tried to accomplish this by this code:
[Code]...
Symbol 'buttons', Layer 'Actions', Frame 1, Line 41061: Call to a possibly undefined method addChild through a reference with static type Class.
The newMC doesn't show up.If I add 'parent.' in front of the addChild then it appears.mc_LibItem has a base class of "flash.display.MovieClip" and is exporting for ActionScript and on frame one.For grins I created a new .fla and began messing around with the same addChild idea and it worked.
somewhat understood the basics of adding and removing children, however, I am facing another problem. After using the removeChild Function, I can't seem to add another child.For example:
ActionScript Code: var attachedMC = new (getDefinitionByName("Content1") as Class)() Page.addChild(attachedMC);
I have a main "shell" swf which, by clicking several buttons, will load/unload various external swfs into a Placeholder_mc which resides on the main timeline in Shell.swf In the documentation and tutorials I've seen a couple different methods, and I'm not sure I quite understand the difference, or at least the reason you would use one over the other...In the 1st method, you can just add the Loader object using the addChild() method:
Code:
var myLoader:Loader = new Loader(); var myURLRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("ExternalFileA.swf"); myLoader.load(myURLRequest); Placeholder_mc.addChild(myLoader);
This will apparently add myLoader to the display list once it has completely loaded.The 2nd method, you supposedly can add the Loader.content; however, it appears you can only do this once the content has completed loading, so you need to incorporate an event handler with the contentLoaderInfo object:
Code:
var myLoader:Loader = new Loader(); var myURLRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("ExternalFileA.swf"); myLoader.load(myURLRequest);
[code]....
What are the pros/cons of adding the entire Loader object, as opposed to the Loader.content and vice versa?
I want to embed some video into my HTML page. As background I want to use big picture. And above it I want to insert loop video with (i.e.) walking man.So, can I embed video (without flash and any player controls) in page?Can I decode video with transparent background? Is there any codecs which support transparent background (alpha-channel)?
As the title already states i have a (big) problem importing a PNG in a Flex 4 application.Created a PNG file in Photoshop with transparent background. Loaded in Flex application using this code:[code]So when the complete event fires the data has been loaded and it is possible to assign the data loaded to the image component named Thumbnail:[code]Unitls now everything works as expected!But when i try to send the Thumbnail component's data to a WCF service i receive a photo with white background:[code]
I've designed a Flash site in CS3 using Action Script 2.0 that has a main flash movie sorta floating in space over a gradient background. I want the gradient background to re-size with the browser, so I thought that the easiest way to do this would be to delete the gradient background in Flash and instead recreate the background in Dreamweaver using the repeat background option and then make the Flash movie's background transparent. (I hope I'm making some amount of sense here).
I've found a few tutorials on how to do this, but so far I just get a white background instead of transparent. I've tried choosing "Transparent - Windowless" under Window Mode on the HTML tab in Publish Settings. And I've tried selecting the movie from within DW and clicking the parameter button and adding a "wmode" parameter with "transparent" as its value.
trying to print a movieclip with a white backgroundwhile keeping the stage background black.The movieclip,printResults_mc has a white rectangle in the bottom layer, 850pixels x 1100 pixels. The following function scales printResults_mcto the printers printable area but because isimpossible to predict the aspect ratio of the printable area someblack background always leaks out. I tried making the whitebackground 20 pixels larger than I need (870 x 1120) and thensetting a crop rectangle in addPage of (10,10,850,1100), no luck,the black stage background just fills in the area outside the crop.A simple solution would be to temporarily set the stage backgroundcolor property to white, print, then set it back to black, but I
When I click on the next button that loads a another swf the background from the previous swf flicks on the screen.click on the attached link URL..[code]I would like the "current_ plan.swf" to load so that the over lays (no so much on the views but more in the LIVING MASTER.We are creating this for both touchscreen and web(the link is the working touchscreen version hence the files being large).[code]
I have converted a large background image (much larger than the stage) into a Movie Clip. I did this so I can make it scroll as the player traverses to the edge of the scene.This appears to make the player free to roam the entire background image.I have a tree symbol with a class attached to it that blocks player movement.Here is my problem:
When I drag and drop instances of the tree symbol onto the background, the trees are stationary and do not scroll with the background.I do not want to have to implement code to make the trees scroll when the background does.I was wondering if there was a way to simply attach the trees to the background so that if the background moves, the trees move with it and appear to be part of the background as if they were drawn into it.It is convenient for me to be able to drag and drop as many trees as i need to block certain routes on the background from the player.I tried writing code to make the trees move but it was only working for the very last tree that I added to the scene.
I really don't know much about flash or swf files but in updating my portfolio I came across Polaroid gallery. I have managed to update the background jpeg with my own picture and remove the fade effect. However in the original program the background was tileable so when seen in a full screen browser looked fine. As my picture is not tileable I would like to know if it is possible to scale the background or the whole swf object without tiling the background.
I am relatively new to Flash CS3 and i have been learning Action-script 3 over the past week. I have come quite a long way and i have made a site in flash but i just have a question.I have been using an image as my background and i am happy with the way flash automatically scales all the objects in my file but the background image does not scale. Is there a way to do this? I have found out things online which show me how to add auto-resizing to the background but this knocks off the flash auto scaling/resizing for everything else.
create an effect that loads a fullscreen background image that changes according to the navigation selection. The background will be replaced everytime the navigation is activated
I have a series of background MCs, all different coloured gradients (pretty!), and a series of corresponding buttons elsewhere on the stage. On a press of each button I would like the corresponding background MC to come to the top of the pile of backgrounds, then fade in above the previous background. The background that was previously on top, needs to stay next-to-top.If the corresponding background is already at the top of the pile, then nothing needs to happen.
At the moment I am using swapDepths(1) which brings the target to the top no problem, but it may also send the previous top layer MC way down the pile.This is what I'm doing at the moment:
on (release) { if (_root.BG.colour2.getDepth()<=0) { _root.BG.colour2._alpha = 0;[code].....
What I have is a function that occurs every second. Every time this function is called, it will add two movie clips from the library onto the screen. I am wondering if there will be a problem if my function keeps on continuously adding children to my scene?
Im wondering if its possible to arrange movieclips with addchild in such a way like this?:[code]mc_1 and mc_2 is in my case a forward and back button (obviously these have to be on top all the time).. mc_3 - 6 is images rotating.
I'm new to programming in general, so not only are the basic concepts new to me but OOP and all of the various underlying rules are keeping me very frustrated in this learning process..I've reached a point that I'm simply stuck and can't find the solution through trial and error, and perhaps am not grasping how addChild works. traces just fine, but then when I try to run addChild I get "error 1023: stack overflow occurred: at Bullet$iinit()".Ignore the commented out lines, they're just for some testing and some trial and error).
//Bullet Class package { import flash.display.MovieClip;
