Actionscript 3 :: Receiving Mouse Events For Lower Indexed And Partially Covered Display Objects?

i have 2 sprites on stage. bottomSprite is added to the display list first, followed by topSprite. topSprite partially covers bottomSprite.i've added an event listener to bottomSprite for MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVED notifications to simply trace the mouseX and mouseY coordinates. however, the notification doesn't work for the parts of bottomSprite that are covered by topSprite.

I want to handle the mouseevents for all the sprites on the stage including the one those are hidden behind (or overlapped or occluded) and the main condition is that I want to handle the occluded sprite (that hidden behind other sprite). example, say I have sprite1 and sprite2 on stage and I want to start drag whenever i click on the sprite and stop drag after another click.
This can be done easily, but the problem and my main requirement is that if I drag the sprite1 and drop it exactly on top of the sprite2 then sprite2 will be hidden behind the sprite1 I wont be able to drag the sprite2 without moving the sprite1 first. if you have played zynga's empires and allais game on facebook, it is handled seperatly, it is how it works in that game, the mouse event is triggered on the sprite behind the overlapping sprite, if you have two sprites overlapping one sprite than the mouse event is triggered on the sprite which is last and not the one in front irrespective of whether there is only one sprite overlapping or two or three and this happens to irregular shaped sprites (not just rectangles)

I have a web site with an intro movie playing in the page's header.
The SWF playing the FLV with sound is in a division that is placed at a lower Z level. On top of the SWF, at a higher Z level, is a png image of my header containing an oval transparent window. This image acts as a skin sitting on top of my movie. The movie and sound play inside the oval window fine. I have other reasons for this approach as opposed to integrating the whole header image into the SWF.
The issue is I have no mouse control over the SWF because it is at a lower Z level. The mouse events are blocked by the transparent image window that sits on top.
I want to add a sound volume control to my movie. The control can sit either inside the oval area, or outside somewhere else on the page.
I would prefer to control the volume using another SWF that sits at the normal Z level where the mouse can work. Can one SWF control another?
Other alternatives might be to use Javascript, or even HTML image tags to control my SWF.

When I put a sprite over top of another sprite, the lower sprite still gets the mouse events.
I'm sure there must just be a method that I don't know about. How do I tell AS to only raise events for the top sprites?

AS2, Flash CS4. We're using ExternalInterface to get callbacks from JavaScript for mouseover and mouseout when the user rolls on or off the .swf on a page. This works fine in all situations except for one:If the .swf is viewed in Mac Firefox, and if there is a button or mc near the edge of the stage with an onRelease() event, when you mouse from outside of the .swf into the button, the mouseover fires correctly; but when you mouse out from the button and continue outside of the .swf, mouseout never fires.We have built a small, simple testbed with only minimal code and assets (ExternalInterface code and a button). We are able to duplicate this consistently, on multiple machines. (again, Mac Firefox only).url....

Just wanted to ask is it possible for a flash app to capture mouse and keyboard events when it loses focus. I've tried putting it in a div container through SWFObject library and than used jquery forward mouse events plugin, but without success. My idea was to capture mouse events (click event) on the body and then transfer it to the flash app

i need to track the mouse movements(and register what component is under the mouse), it is done already, but i meet new problem, if click right button then context menu will be opened and no any new events(mouseMove, mouseOver) received by my components. I understand that this context menu is more browser then flash/flex and afaiu the is no way to disable context menu at all. So may be somebody know any trick to avoid this events blocking?

So, events bubble up the display list. That's great if that's what you want. But what if you have objects on the stage that are not related that need to listen for events from each other? A simplified example:

addChild(objA);
var objB = new ObjB;

Object B can listen for events dispatched by object C. But I also need object A to listen for events dispatched by object C. Also, these objects are created in different classes so I can't hard code references to each other.

I have an array name region it has a couple of properties. "code", "name", "value"
I want to store this array in an indexed object called regions.
I would then like to access the object by referring to its sub property name
regions[1].code

regions[1].value

Can someone outline the variable definition and construct so I can access this information. Happy to replace the index field with the code value.

When dispatching events in as3 I always have to extend class from sprite, or movieclip, but when I don't have display objects I don't wont to extend to sprite or movieclip. What is the most light class that I can extend, I mean no display object, and still do use event dispatching?

I have a garment class which extends Sprite. Each garment class has 2 children on the display list: var hittest: Sprite //basic rectangle sprite to use for drag and drop of the garment itself var artwork:Sprite //this is a simple piece of vector artwork imported from flash. The artwork is visually important and the hittest is just an approximation for moving the Garment item. When i add artwork to this structre. Then hittest gets covered unless i do this: artwork.mouseEnabled = false; The problem for me comes with this:
I need to be able to always keep the garment draggable via access to hittest. However, IF an item is placed on the character, then i want to artwork to also catch click events. (to open a colour pallette). So i must make artwork.mouseEnabled = true to catch these events (but it blocks drag now).
The reason i am here is because of a byproduct of that. Even if i do somehow manage to keep the dragging enabled on hittest sprite, i have noticed that MOUSE_UP, and DOUBLE_CLICK always fire a MOUSE_CLICK event. My head turns to mush because now it seems that im going to be wrestling with the color pallette opening when i dont want it to.

How can I make a mouse event ignore, or skip over another object? Say I have a small Sprite on a Large sprite, I want it to act as if the small sprite isn't there, and pass the mouse events directly through to the larger sprite behind it. I've been searching for this for a while and have tried various things but no avail.

I'm having trouble with my site [URL] As you may see, the animation is often all mixed up: the buttons do not take the user to the proper frame, the frames and buttons do not display or just partially... Sometimes everything goes back to normal when I empty the cache and/or refresh the page and click repeatedly on random buttons, but not always, and not for long. I don't know, it just happens somehow randomly, especially when I upload the swf file again to update the site. I understand it has something to do with the flash file itself and having to insert some code somewhere,

How do I manage that, while the movie starts, some parts of the Display List are "hold in the backhand" and get loaded when I decide that they should.Can I only do that via external SWF-Files? Further question: Is it possible to stream the files, by calculating the download speed and starting the movie when I want it to do, or is Flash doing that automatically

I've added an event listener to my stage like this:

The problem is, some keys don't trigger the event. So if I type "ASDFG" I only get a response for "F" and "G", here's the trace:

Main class is Game.Game creates an Engine and adds the engine to the display with addChild()
EDIT: It seems it's because the keyboard events are being taken over by Flash CS3 and using them to select Tools and not letting them go to the SWF, very very annoying. - Can I turn this off?

I have a Sprite which is a child of a Flex object, and acts as the main "game window". So during game-play it should get keyboard input but at other times not. When I add a keyboard listener to it, it never fires.
Do I need to stop parent objects 'eating' the events somehow, or something similar? I get the same thing with mouse-wheel events, but mouse-click events are fine. Sprite doesn't seem to have the concept of focus unless I missed it.
More generally in this kind of approach, are there any suggestions on the best way? For instance some keys might still be needed to be intercepted before getting to the game-window, like ESC or F1 or something... the aim is the game-window isn't aware of other UI.

I have an application that uses Remote SharedObjects and I am seeing some strange behaviour. I am writing an ActionScript application in AS3 using Flash Builder and connecting to Wowza Media Server 2. My application is working just fine but I am now trying to write unit tests for it using FlexUnit. My unit tests involve creating multiple connections to the same remote SharedObject and making sure that I am getting updates correctly. Everything seems to be working well except that I am not getting any of the SyncEvent.SYNC events with an info.code of "delete".
When I run my applications independently in separate tabs or even separate swfs embedded in the same page it works fine. For some reason though it does not work when inside a unit test. I have also found that if I load the swfs using a Loader inside the same SWF then I get the same behaviour. It seems to me to be something strange about the way multiples of the same SharedObject behave within the same SWF. I have had to work around other strange behaviour in the unit tests such as oldValues not being set properly in the onSync events too.

I am attempting to dispatch an event on the click of any of the buttons in a button array in the document class of my application. The intent is to have an external object receive this dispatch so as to remove a listener for the EnterFrame event in this class.

I'm having a problem with a custom subclassed Event class. Or I should say, I'm having trouble receiving events from this custom event class. I'm pretty sure I have everything wired correctly, the event is dispatched properly and my trace shows the Event instance being spawned. However, my eventListener, which is in another class, never fires its handler function.Have any of you run across instances where custom event classes fail to fire? I'm about at my wit's end.

I have used the script below to load the mp3 file, but I couldn't do what I used to when I imported the mp3file to stage and I did it there. Is there a way to place fadeout at the end of the music and make the sound lower and lower, is there a way to apply something like that via Action Script?

Right now all the sounds (78 of them) on my guitar play using the roll_over event but that doesn't give the user much control over what sound is played.
The actionscript im using to play my sounds is this;

Is it possible to receive custom generic typed objects through AMF? I'm trying to integrate a flex app with an existing C# service but flex is choking on custom generic typed objects. As far as I can tell Flex doesn't even support generics, but I'd like to be able to even just read in the object and cast its members as necessary. I basically just want flex to ignore the <T>. I'm hopeful that there's a way to do this, since flex doesn't complain about typed collections (a server call returning List works fine and flex converts it to an ArrayCollection just like an un-typed List).

I have a zooming map .swf file loading in behind a navigation button interface .swf. The map.swf turns your mouse to a hand cursor so you can pan when you zoom in on it.Eveb though the map file is behind my nav file,when I roll over my nav file, the mouse is still turning to a hand cursor. Is there any way around this? The only time it turns to an actually pointer is when it rolls over the actual buttons on the nav file, so the mouse flickers back and forth between the hand and the pointer.How can I get the lower .swf to not effect the .swf on top?

I am using that has action frames.It is a photo album template that allows me to turn pages by clicking my mouse in the lower corner and dragging it across.If I copy frame 5 and past it as frame 8 and I change the image on frame 8 it also changes the image in frame 5.Here is the script below from the 9th frame:

Just wanted to ask if there is any advantage for either using mouse click event or touch tap events, when writing apps for mobiles or tablets (for the iphone especially)?
I know that both of them should work fine, but in term of performance, is anyone better? Are there any things I should be aware of when choosing either?
By the way am using actionscript3 to implement the app.

I have an animation that I want to start when clicking on the flash window. However, I've also have some buttons on the stage. If I add an event listener for MouseEvent.CLICK on the stage, then it 'eats up' the events and the buttons don't work.
I've tried some tricks, by adding some invisible buttons on top of the real ones, and use the MOUSE_OVER event to selectively enable/disable the mouseEnabled flag for the stage, but didn't work because it complains that the property or method doesn't exist (which I find odd).

In a project i'm doing I have a custom cursor, using the start drag command and mouse.hide. the issue being that the movieclip being dragged is blocking the mouse from initiation mouse events properly.
