In my Javascript I am adding a variable ('videoToPlay') in order for it to be passed to the Flash object with the purpose of using it to specify which video among a list of scrolling videos is to be played.

I'm not massively familiar with the XML format, so apologies if I've not explained myself very well. As you can hopefully see, I have one XML file containing my map data and another containing my text, such as area titles and locations. What I'm trying to retrieve in the example above is the string with the label "title_training" from the "text_XML" file. Of course, the function should be able to return the title for any area, so I need to find a way of converting "_element" in to the right format

I've looked it up and apparently it's most commonly received when someone is trying to reference a movieclip that hasn't been loaded or added to the display yet, however since I'm not even using movieclips.
I am downloading a flash video with Perl. Is there a way to interact with the flash video like retrieving variables from the flash video, like you can do in C#?
For instance, in C# you can put a Shockwave Flash Object on a form and then you can do GetVariable/SetVariable on that object. I don't want to/don't care if I can see the video, I just want something like the Get/SetVariable of the C# Shockwave Flash object.
i've been setting up a high score table in my game, and everything is working, but i cant work out how to get variables from the URLLoader.data that im retrievingif i trace loadedScores.data, i get this&name1=matt&score1=323250&name2=1234567890123456.. . and so o've tried passing it to a URLVariables constructor, but it says the string doesnt contain the correct name/variable pairs or something, and loadedScores.data.name1 doesnt work.
View 8 RepliesI am working on a flash movie for a client and I have not used flash much before at all. I have the object/embed code here below with the following src path sos.swf?wID=5. I need that wID so when I load certain variables from a php page later on in the movie I can access that persons information (wID correspons to the primary table key).

I have tried several things and I am not sure just how to access the flash URL variables. To make sure I am putting the action script in the right place I have only one layer, and when I click on that, I enter the actionscript in the actionscript window for that layer. Is that the correct place to put it? I am pretty sure it is but I just want to double check. The variables.text at the bottom are my dynamic text boxes that are displaying information from the sos.php file. Nothing is showing up in my movie and I am unaware of good debugging techniques for actionscript. I have tried to trace(widgetID); but nothing shows up in my movie. I am not sure if that is because of the image I have on the screen or what.
By the way here is the part in my php script that sends the variables over. They do have data in them but nothing is being displayed in the dynamic text boxes.

Can I call a variable declared in a SWF, and call the same variable into another SWF, when i am loading it using XML.I am declaring a variable in the "Child movie", and am loading this "Child movie" into a "Parent movie" using XML. Can I retrieve the variable declared in the "Child movie" in the "Parent movie".

I'm trying to read date variables from an external text file. I'm using the LoadVars method and it is working fine for regular string variables. I'm running into trouble trying to convert some of those strings into date variables so I can compare the current date to the targetDateX variable from the text file. I'm working on a countdown timer for a list of different times/dates. It will display the time left until the first event, then after that event the time left until the second event. I'm running the code in a for loop and everything is working except being able to convert the string with format (yyyy,mm,dd,hh,mm) into a date variable- I've attached a sample of where I'm having trouble.

From inside the Enemy.as class I would like to know the position of the hero instance and be able to move them accordingly towards the hero. If I was working from within the document class I could do something like hero.x and hero.y to get the x and y position of the hero.

I need to access successfully loaded XML data from the main document class BUT from objects multiple levels deep. I could hack around this setting properties deep down from the top but it doesn't seem like good practice. Is there a better way?
View 4 RepliesI have a Main.fla which loads Main.as as its document class. In Main.as I have a public function named "Main" which runs a trace. I also have another .as file called Preloader.as, which also has a public function in it, this one named "Preloader" with simple trace in it. I just cannot figure out how to use Preloader() from the Preloader class in Main() from the Main class. Main.as loads up fine when the SWF loads and traces.
View 10 RepliesI have a initApp.as which instantiates a class which needs to access the "currentState" property and the States array as well. However we cannot get this to work as we cannot see how we can access this information.
Within initApp.as currentState is accessed via "this.currentState". This does not work in the class which is instatiated within initApp.as. The following error is thrown:
"Access of undefined property currentState."
I am creating a Weapon class for a game and the weapons itself will be the sub classes. The sub classes will hard code some values (such as max ammo and the weapon name).
I trying to access this declared data in the base class constructor, at the moment it's not outputting the values. Is this possible?

My current workaround is creating a protected method in the base class to trace the information and calling that method in the sub class's constructor, this works fine but this doesn't seem like the most efficient technique?
Now I would like to use the variable out of class1 in class2 and change the value there.Afterwords use class2 in the main, but I get an error message. Why?

What is the correct syntax to initiate a function in a class similar to constructing an associative array? I have a function that's custom variables is ballooning out and I'd like to label them in the call for sanity sake.
currently:

desired:

Is it "better" to initialize AS3 class variables in the class constructor? Or can I just initialize them to their default value when I declare them at the top of my class? I ask because when there's a lot of class variables, it appears inefficient to declare them in one place and then initialize them in another when I could easily do both in the same place. I'm trying to create a new instance of a MovieClip when the original one has been used. Would sound easy enough. Just use: var

the class name/mc in the library im trying to duplicate is MCg1 so
var instanceName:MCg1 = new MCg1(); right?
However, the particular object in the library i'm trying to duplicate has a base class that is an external class file (just to control it's drag drop functionality)... i.e baseclass is not set to the standard flash.display.MovieClip, or whatever the case maybe. So i end out with a: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

Lets say I have Main.swf and sub.swf, and I wanna load sub when I press a button from Main, but sub.swf has its own external class file attached, so here is the problem, when I load sub using loader class and I would get this message from the output panel:

seems loader class can not access sub.swf's external class when sub is being loaded.

I have two .fla files. One of my .fla files consist of 15+ .as files; we'll call this one XML editor. The other .fla file consists of 10+ .as files; we'll call it the interface.
The xmleditor.swf loads the interface.swf. Within the xmleditor.swf, a login screen appears and the enduser logs in as either a "user" or an "admin". The "user" or "admin" is stored in a public variable called "userType". The userType variable is created in one of the many xmleditor.fla .as files called Login.as.
Once logged in, xmleditor loads the interface.swf. interface.fla uses 10+ .as files. one is called nodeNames.as I need an if statement in nodeNames.as that is something like this:

I have the following FlashVars.as file but I have no idea what the steps are to make it work.
