ActionScript 2.0 :: Variable Usage And Garbage Collection?

Dec 7, 2006

When ever there are no longer any references pointing to an object in memory, that object is purged from memory and permanently forgotten by the player.

Code:
delete a; // Object has reference count of 1
delete b; // Object has reference count of 0, removed from memory

Note: remember, the delete operator only removes variable association, it does not delete objects in memory, the GC is responsible for that. Also delete will only work on non class member variables.

I have a class called MenuView which contains buttons. After a button from the menu is clicked, its content - which is contained in another class - is being attached to the existing class by the means of the new keyword, so basically it just creates SubClass inside the MenuView class (or instance of another class inside the MenuView Class object if you like):

Code:
_sign_content = new NewEntryView(width);
_sign_content.addEventListener("newEntry_submit", onNewEntrySubmit);
addChild(_sign_content);

NOTE: _sign_content is private property of the class of type NewEntryView (this class contains the content for the button clicked)

Inside this NewEntryView Class (which is being referrenced by the _sign_content property by now), there are textFields being attached to the DisplayList, eventListeners being called, subclasses being created, all that in different functions of the class.

Now when user clicks another button in the menu, i have to set _sign_content=null etc., so that GC can harvest it.

I do so this way from within MenuView class:

Code:
if(_sign_content != null) {
// remove container
removeChild(_sign_content);

[code]....

Actionscript 3 :: Garbage Collection Reference Variable Within A Vector

Apr 10, 2012

I am implementing garbage collection within an AS3 app. In one part, several display objects are created within a loop like so:

for(var i:uint = 0; i <= this._exampleVector.length - 1; i++)
{
this._customText = new CustomTextObject(this._exampleVector[i].playlistText), this._customTextWidth);

[Code].....

When I try to make the _customText within the _customTextVector null, this does not work. It only makes the index inside the Vector null. how to do this or another method to garbage collect?

Actionscript 3 :: Reordering An Array Collection Based On Another Array Collection Hierarchy?

Sep 16, 2011

I have an array, crewPositionsAC that contains a list of position abreviatations - EP, PR, DR, WR, and so on. These positions are read in through an XML file each time my flex application loads. Also being populated from an XML is a project. Within a project, there are positions (a student assigned to a type of position listed within crewPositionsAC). These positions are not necessarily in the correct hierarchy order dictated by crewPositionsAC. I have all the positions within an ArrayCollection (positionsAC) with the following structure:

positionsAC (arrayCollection)
[0] = Array
[0] = startOffset
[1] = numDays

[code].....

Then, the user can click a button to add another position. When the "Add Crew Member" button is pressed, the user is presented with a list of possible positions to add. Currently, I simply add another array to positionsAC. This results in the recently added crew member to placed on the bottom of the list. I need to take positionsAC and reorder it based on it's [2] item (role) based on the hierarchy defined in the crewPositionsAC. crewPositionsAC has the following structure:

crewPositionsAC:
[0] = EP
[1] = PR
[2] = DR
[3] = WR

* continue until all possible position types are listed

IDE :: Garbage Collection In CS4?

Jun 25, 2009

It is known that a display Object removed from the display list will be garbage collected only if any event listener associated with it is removed.What I would like to know, but could not anywhere find an answer to, is that for a class that we create which extends, say Sprite, and uses and manipulates various other display elements within it, while removing an instance of this class from the display list is it sufficient to remove the event listeners associated with the instance of the class, or do we necessarily have to remove all internal event listeners of the class definition associated with the display objects that the class uses and manages.

AS3 :: How Does Garbage Collection Work

Nov 6, 2011

I understand that Objects not referenced by anything are garbage collected, and have been making sure to null out referenced to objects when I'm done with them. What I want to know are a few things:Do only Objects need to be null-referenced?How often does garbage collection usually run? Does it tend to run when processor demand is low? Is there a way I can tell garbage collection to run manually, such as when I'm done with a playing field full of sprites? This is not really needed if garbage collection tends to run when processor use is low, since it will run anyway at the times I'd like it to.Objects created just for the scope of an if or for statement etc, unless they are assigned a reference elseware, are eligible for garbage collection, right?

Xml :: Initializing A Collection From MXML?

Aug 9, 2004

How do I write a combination of XML declarations and Actionscript classes such that I can initialize each of my three lists from XML?

note that I am not trying to populate a Flex UI element (such as a DataGrid) with the various number-name pairs. I'm just trying to read the data into a plain old vanilla collection. (Once I've got my collections initialized, I can populate DataGrids or whatever at my leisure.) I can't find any documentation of how to address this super-simple case. The documentation all assumes that I'm trying to do something much more complicated, such as accessing a remote database, which confuses the issue tremendously.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Tween And Garbage Collection?

Sep 25, 2008

No matter what I do I cannot solve a tween AS3 Garbage Collection problem I am having that is wreaking havoc on my tween instances working correctly/consistently. Some Sprites never tween at all, some do but only part way. And it effects different ones almost each time.

I have read a fair amount recently on AS3 Garbage Collection and improperly referenced Tweens and other asynchronous instances getting picked up in mid process. I am experiencing the signature inconsistent behaviour that the I have read of.

I have tried using class level Static and non static properties to store references to my Tween instances so they will not be marked for GC. No luck. I have placed references to them in Class level Arrays, I have also used TweenMax's static to() Method that insures that it will shield it from GC and its alt. non Static
constructor instantiation, with persist:true. I also implemented another custom package; GCSafeTween(), other users said it does as it should, but it's not working in my case.

To test the GC problem, I edited the two eventListerners() in the Adobes' fl.transitions.Tween so that their default weakReference property was false. Doing this made the Tween work correctly. But that's a terrible solution.

Actionscript 3 :: Searching A Collection In Flex?

Sep 10, 2009

I have a collection in Flex and I have sorted it by a date field, so the latest elements appear first in my view.

In order to do this I have applied a sort field like so:

var articleSort:Sort = new Sort();
articleSort.fields = [ new SortField('published', false, true), new SortField('id', true, true)];
articles.sort = articleSort;
articles.refresh();

Now I want to be able to use a cursor to findFirst() in that collection based on the id. However in order to do that I have to also pass through the published date in the findFirst() method. This is a real pain as I don't have the published date at that time, (or it's expensive to get).

articleCoursor.findFirst({ published: modelLocator.articles.getArticleById(event.newArticleId).published, id: event.newArticleId });

As you can see I am having to get it from the modelLocator in my application, and basically look up the item...

Ideally I would like to pass a wildcard though for the date in the FindFirst() function, as the id is the only thing I care about when searching. However it seems it Flex I can't do that.

The other option that occurred to me is to resort the collection before searching, but that would cause my view to re-render (as it's bound to the collection) on the collections refresh event. Plus it seems rather silly to have to resort in order to search.

Actionscript 3 :: FLV Performance And Garbage Collection?

Apr 20, 2010

I'm building a large flash site (AS3) that uses huge FLVs as transition videos from section to section. The FLVs are 1280x800 and are being scaled to 1680x1050 (much of which is not displayed to users with smaller screens), and are around 5-8 seconds apiece. I'm encoding the videos using On2's hi-def codec, VP6-S, and playback is pretty good with native FLV players, Perian-equipped Quicktime, and simple proof-of-concept FLV playback apps built in AS3.

The problem I'm having is that in the context of the actual site, playback isn't as smooth; the framerate isn't quite as good as it should be, and more problematically, there's occasional jerkiness and dropped frames (sometimes pausing the video for as long as a quarter of a second or so). My guess is that this is being caused by garbage collection in the Flash player, which happens nondeterministically and is therefore hard to test and control for.

I'm using a single instance of FLVPlayback to play the videos; I originally was using NetStream objects and so forth directly but switched to FLVPlayback for this reason. Has anyone experienced this sort of jerkiness with FLVPlayback (or more generally, with hi-def Flash video)? Am I right about GC being the culprit here, and if so, is there any way to prevent it during playback of these system-intensive transitions?
